Abstract

We generate entangled twin beams using four-wave-mixing and investigate its propagation through a negative refractive index medium. Anomalous dispersion is generated near a gain line induced by a pump beam in an atomic vapor.

Propagation of a bipartite entangled state through a fast–light medium

We generate entangled twin beams using four-wave-mixing and investigate the behavior of the quantum correlations when one field is sent through a fast–light medium with anomalous dispersion. We report an advance of 3.7±0.1 ns, marking the realization of a negative temporal delay line for quantum states.

Generation of pulsed bipartite entanglement using four-wave mixing

Quentin C. Glorieux, Jeremy B. Clark, Neil Corzo +1 more

Using four-wave mixing in a hot atomic vapor, we generate a pair of entangled twin beams in the microsecond pulsed regime near the D1 line of 85 Rb, making it compatible with commonly used quantum memory techniques. The beams are generated in the bright and vacuum-squeezed regimes, requiring two separate methods of analysis, without and with local oscillators, respectively. We report a noise reduction of up to 3.8 ± 0.2 dB below the standard quantum limit in the pulsed regime and a level of entanglement that violates an Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen inequality.

Two symmetric four-wave mixing signals generated in a medium with anomalous refractive index

A. S. Alvarez, A. A. C. de Almeida, S. S. Vianna

Abstract We report experimental and theoretical results of two symmetrical signals of degenerate four-wave mixing generated in rubidium vapor. Both nonlinear signals are induced by two almost copropagating laser beams, with k ⃗ a and k ⃗ b wave-vectors, and detected simultaneously in the 2 k ⃗ a − k ⃗ b and 2 k ⃗ b − k ⃗ a directions. In each direction, we observe a single peak when the two beams are tuned on the closed transition 85 Rb 5 S 1/2 ( F = 3) → 5 P 3/2 ( F = 4). The excitation spectra reveal a small frequency separation between the two peaks, which is explained when propagation effects are taken into account. Furthermore, our theoretical analysis shows that a correct description of the frequency position of each peak is achieved with a variable refractive index for both lasers, in which the scanning laser experiences an anomalous window in the refractive index near resonance.

A DRESSED-STATE ASSISTED LEFT-HANDED COHERENT MEDIUM FOR HIGH-GAIN OPTICAL AMPLIFICATION

Jian-Qi Shen

Abstract—A scheme of double-negative left-handed atomic vapor medium based on dressed-state assisted simultaneous electric and magnetic resonances is suggested. In this mechanism, simultaneous electric- and magnetic-dipole allowed transitions of atoms are driven by an optical wave by taking full advantage of both mixed-parity dressed-state assisted resonance and incoherent population pumping in a quantum-coherent atomic medium (e.g., alkali-metal atomic vapor). Since the simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability can be achieved in a same frequency band, such an atomic vapor will exhibit an incoherent-gain double-negative refractive index that is three-dimensionally isotropic and homogeneous. The imaginary part of the negative refractive index of the present atomic vapor would be drastically suppressed or would become negative because of loss compensation through incoherent population transfer. The quantum-coherent left-handed atomic vapor presented here will have four characteristics: i) three-dimensionally isotropic and homogeneous negative refractive index, ii) double-negative atomic medium at visible (and infrared) wavelengths, iii) tunable negative refractive index based on dressed-state quantum coherence, and iv) high gain due to incoherent pumping action.
