Abstract

We present an experimental study of temporal retardation combined with temporal compression of weak laser pulses. The effect is optically controlled by the presence of another light pulse, although no coherent control is required. Probe pulse delays up to 13 ns and maximum compression factor of 3 were observed using few-ns-long laser pulses. We also present a theoretical model of pulse propagation that is able to reproduce the experimental results with fairly good accuracy.

Temporal pulse compression and retardation by incoherent all-optical control

Marco V. Tognetti, Emiliano Sali, Stefano Cavalieri +1 more

We present a theoretical analysis of a new scheme for temporal retardation combined with temporal compression of weak laser pulses, optically controlled by the presence of one additional light pulse. A realistic realization of this scheme in hot Rb is discussed, showing that a large range of values of the optically controllable delay-bandwidth product can be obtained with a limited pulse distortion.

Temporal compression of nanosecond laser pulses using coherent control

Roberto Buffa, Stefano Cavalieri, Lorenzo Fini +2 more

We present a study of the temporal compression of nanosecond laser pulses resulting from the coherent control peculiarities of the propagation dynamics in a regime of electromagnetically induced transparency. We describe the general theoretical framework and discuss the crucial conditions required in order to experimentally realize such a temporal compression scheme. A proof-of-concept experimental realization of a scheme of this type in a sample of hot sodium vapors is currently being implemented: we describe in detail the experimental setup designed for this purpose.

Temporal compression of short-wavelength laser pulses by coherent control in rare gases

Roberto Buffa, Stefano Cavalieri, Marco V. Tognetti

We present a theoretical study of temporal compression of a short-wavelength laser pulse predicted in a real, Doppler-broadened, atomic system. The compression is the result of the coherent control peculiarities of electromagnetically induced transparency-propagation dynamics. Numerical results are reported and discussed, showing a temporal compression of 2 orders of magnitude (from 10 ns to 100 ps) of a 106.7-nm laser pulse in argon atoms at room temperature.

Optical control of superluminal propagation of nanosecond laser pulses

Emilio Ignesti, Federico Tommasi, Roberto Buffa +3 more

We present an all-optical incoherent control of superluminal propagation of a 3 ns laser pulse. The experimental results show an induced advance up to 400 ps, without significant distortion, continuously controlled by the characteristics of a control pulse. The measurements agree with numerical simulation.

Optical delay control of large-spectral-bandwidth laser pulses

Emilio Ignesti, Stefano Cavalieri, Lorenzo Fini +4 more

In this Rapid Communication we report an experimental observation of temporal delay control of large-spectral-bandwidth multimode laser pulses by means of electromagnetically induced transparency. We achieved optically controllable retardation of laser pulses with an input spectral bandwidth of 3.3 GHz with limited temporal distortion and excellent values of the delay-bandwidth product. The experimental results compare favorably with a theoretical analysis.

Controllable Optical Delay of Wideband Laser Pulses by Means of Coherent Effects

Emilio Ignesti, Cavalieri S., Fini L +4 more

We report the first experimental observation of controllable temporal delay of wideband laser pulses (input spectral bandwidth of 3.3 GHz) using electromagnetically induced transparency. We obtain this result with limited temporal distortion of our pulses and excellent values of the delay bandwidth product. Our experimental results are in agreement with a theoretical analysis.
