Abstract

We present a theoretical analysis of a new scheme for temporal retardation combined with temporal compression of weak laser pulses, optically controlled by the presence of one additional light pulse. A realistic realization of this scheme in hot Rb is discussed, showing that a large range of values of the optically controllable delay-bandwidth product can be obtained with a limited pulse distortion.

Incoherent optical control of pulse propagation and compression

Emilio Ignesti, Federico Tommasi, Roberto Buffa +4 more

We present an experimental study of temporal retardation combined with temporal compression of weak laser pulses. The effect is optically controlled by the presence of another light pulse, although no coherent control is required. Probe pulse delays up to 13 ns and maximum compression factor of 3 were observed using few-ns-long laser pulses. We also present a theoretical model of pulse propagation that is able to reproduce the experimental results with fairly good accuracy.

Optical delay control of large-spectral-bandwidth laser pulses

Emilio Ignesti, Stefano Cavalieri, Lorenzo Fini +4 more

In this Rapid Communication we report an experimental observation of temporal delay control of large-spectral-bandwidth multimode laser pulses by means of electromagnetically induced transparency. We achieved optically controllable retardation of laser pulses with an input spectral bandwidth of 3.3 GHz with limited temporal distortion and excellent values of the delay-bandwidth product. The experimental results compare favorably with a theoretical analysis.

Temporal compression of nanosecond laser pulses using coherent control

Roberto Buffa, Stefano Cavalieri, Lorenzo Fini +2 more

We present a study of the temporal compression of nanosecond laser pulses resulting from the coherent control peculiarities of the propagation dynamics in a regime of electromagnetically induced transparency. We describe the general theoretical framework and discuss the crucial conditions required in order to experimentally realize such a temporal compression scheme. A proof-of-concept experimental realization of a scheme of this type in a sample of hot sodium vapors is currently being implemented: we describe in detail the experimental setup designed for this purpose.

Large group delays and long storage times for optical pulses in atomic vapor cells

We achieve large fractional delays in slow and stored light in atomic vapors using temporally shaped control fields. Combined with amplification, temporal control allows for pulse transmission with pulse bandwidth preservation and minimal distortion.

Laser-pulse compression by coherent control in a Doppler-broadened medium: Analytical and numerical studies

Roberto Buffa, Stefano Cavalieri, Emiliano Sali +1 more

We have studied the temporal compression of laser pulses occurring in a scheme based on the coherent control peculiarities of electromagnetically induced transparency. This work extends earlier model studies, including the effect of Doppler broadening in a real hot medium. For definiteness and consistency of the atomic parameters employed, we have treated a scheme in argon. In this way, we establish a realistic model that enables us to predict quantitatively the performance of laser pulse compression experiments.

Control of slow and fast light by incoherent interactions in atomic schemes

We present recent theoretical and experimental results concerning both retardation and acceleration of light pulses in schemes involving a second ‘control’ laser field but that do not involve any coherent preparation of the atomic medium.
