Abstract

In this work, we experimentally demonstrate an image information transfer between two channels by using slow light based on electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) in a solid. The probe optical image is slowed due to steep dispersion induced by EIT. By applying an additional control field to an EIT-driven medium, the slowed image is transferred into two information channels. Image intensities between two information channels can be controlled by adjusting the intensities of the control fields. The similarity of output images is further analyzed. This image information transfer allows for manipulating images in a controlled fashion, and will be important in further information processing.

Slow-light information conversion in a rare-earth-ion-doped solid

We report the experimental observation of a slow-light information conversion via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a rare-earth-ion-doped solid. Under the EIT-based slow-light regime, by manipulating the spectrum of the control fields, the slowed light pulse is transformed into two different frequency-spatial channels. The pulse shapes and energies in two output channels are further studied. This slow-light information conversion can be used as a controllable frequency-spatial multiplexing of the quantum state of the optical field and will be important in information processing and all-optical networks.

Dual control of slow light in reciprocal electromagnetically-induced-transparency conditions

D. Dziczek, Stanisław Chwirot

Electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) of atomic medium interacting with two laser beams can exhibit effects of reciprocal influence of both beams on optical properties of the medium. If the probe beam reaches instantaneous intensity comparable to that of the control beam, considerable energy is transferred to the latter. Resulting increase in the control-beam intensity temporarily modifies EIT conditions and consequently affects propagation of probe-beam pulses. The effect is particularly strong in atomic media exhibiting significant dissipation of radiation energy due to relaxation processes efficiently counteracting the optical pumping. Coherent interaction of atoms with both beams causes reduction of dissipation of the control beam (reciprocal EIT conditions). Our experiments with hot rubidium vapor demonstrate the possibility of dual control over slow propagation of light pulses in such media. Besides the well-known dependence on input control-beam intensity, the delays of output probe pulses depended significantly also on the energy of input probe pulses. Moreover, for relatively short input pulses, very specific shape of output pulses was observed, invariant in wide ranges of input probe pulse energies and control-beam intensities. The shapes of the output pulses were also the same for short input pulses of different shapes as well as for pulses temporarily stored in the medium by switching off the control beam during their propagation.

Based on the fundamental theories and techniques of ultraslow light and storing light information in Electromagnetically Induced Transparency(EIT) medium,I theoretically adopt a special control-light intensity profiles:δ-type profile to manipulate slow-light propagation, and investigate the influences of different control-light parameters on slow-light propagation.Only probe light at exact resonance ω=ω0 can totally pass through the medium.Increasing the parameter β of δ well can make the transparency window narrower.

Frequency Conversion Based on Light Storage in Pr:YSO Crystal

Dun-Mao Du

The authors experimentally demonstrated the optical information transfer between two frequencies channels based on electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) in a four level double lambda system in Pr∶YSO crystal.Under the conditions of EIT,a weak probe pulse is slowed during the propagation in the crystal.A group velocity of 86 m/s is observed experimentally.By adiabatically switching off the control field, most of the probe pulse is stored in the sample.By switching on two control fields(with distinct frequencies and direction) in the release process, the stored optical information is distributed into two spatially-separated channels from the original slow light pulse with a single channel.By adjusting the two control fields in the release process, the information of slowed light pulse can be converted between the frequencies channels.

Transfer of orbital angular momentum of light using electromagnetically induced transparency

Hai-Hua Wang, Jing Wang, Zhi‐Hui Kang +4 more

We experimentally investigate the transfer of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light in a solid driven by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Under the condition of dynamical EIT, the OAM of the probe pulse is stored and retrieved in the experimental medium. By using a four-level double-lambda system to control the retrieval process of EIT storage, we show that OAM can be transferred from the probe field or the second control field to the newly generated signal field, which has a new spatial-frequency mode compared with the input mode. Furthermore, we use EIT-based four-wave mixing to investigate the direct OAM transfer without experiencing the storage, where we do not need to switch off and back on the control field.

Image routing via atomic spin coherence

Lei Wang, Jiaxiang Sun, Mengxi Luo +7 more

Coherent storage of optical image in a coherently-driven medium is a promising method with possible applications in many fields. In this work, we experimentally report a controllable spatial-frequency routing of image via atomic spin coherence in a solid-state medium driven by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Under the EIT-based light-storage regime, a transverse spatial image carried by the probe field is stored into atomic spin coherence. By manipulating the frequency and spatial propagation direction of the read control field, the stored image is transferred into a new spatial-frequency channel. When two read control fields are used to retrieve the stored information, the image information is converted into a superposition of two spatial-frequency modes. Through this technique, the image is manipulated coherently and all-optically in a controlled fashion.
