Abstract

Based on the fundamental theories and techniques of ultraslow light and storing light information in Electromagnetically Induced Transparency(EIT) medium,I theoretically adopt a special control-light intensity profiles:δ-type profile to manipulate slow-light propagation, and investigate the influences of different control-light parameters on slow-light propagation.Only probe light at exact resonance ω=ω0 can totally pass through the medium.Increasing the parameter β of δ well can make the transparency window narrower.

Control Slow Light Via Spatial Dependent Control-light Intensity

Jia Xin-juan

Two kinds of special spatial variation of the coupling field were introduced :square well' and V-type profile, along the probe-light propagation direction. From the propagation equation of slow light, the propagation property of slow light in EIT medium was studied, and the results were separately compared with the resonant penetration of a particle in a square potention well in Quantum Mechanics and the optical black hole.

Dual control of slow light in reciprocal electromagnetically-induced-transparency conditions

D. Dziczek, Stanisław Chwirot

Electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) of atomic medium interacting with two laser beams can exhibit effects of reciprocal influence of both beams on optical properties of the medium. If the probe beam reaches instantaneous intensity comparable to that of the control beam, considerable energy is transferred to the latter. Resulting increase in the control-beam intensity temporarily modifies EIT conditions and consequently affects propagation of probe-beam pulses. The effect is particularly strong in atomic media exhibiting significant dissipation of radiation energy due to relaxation processes efficiently counteracting the optical pumping. Coherent interaction of atoms with both beams causes reduction of dissipation of the control beam (reciprocal EIT conditions). Our experiments with hot rubidium vapor demonstrate the possibility of dual control over slow propagation of light pulses in such media. Besides the well-known dependence on input control-beam intensity, the delays of output probe pulses depended significantly also on the energy of input probe pulses. Moreover, for relatively short input pulses, very specific shape of output pulses was observed, invariant in wide ranges of input probe pulse energies and control-beam intensities. The shapes of the output pulses were also the same for short input pulses of different shapes as well as for pulses temporarily stored in the medium by switching off the control beam during their propagation.

Slow light with electromagnetically induced transparency in optical fibre

Agus Muhamad Hatta, Ali A. Kamli, Ola Al-Hagan +1 more

Abstract Slow light with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the core of optical fibre containing three-level atoms is investigated. The guided modes are treated in the weakly guiding approximation which renders the analysis into a manageable form. The transparency window and permittivity profile of the core due to the strong pump field in the EIT scheme is calculated. For a specific permittivity profile of the core due to EIT, the propagation constant of the weak signal field and spatial shape of fundamental guided mode are calculated by solving the vector wave equation using the finite difference method. It is found that the transparency window and slow light field can be controlled via the optical fibre parameters. The reduced group velocity of slow light in this configuration is useful for many technological applications such as optical memories, effective control of single photon fields, optical buffers and delay lines.

Image information transfer via electromagnetically induced transparency-based slow light

王潇潇, 孙家翔, 孙远航 +7 more

In this work, we experimentally demonstrate an image information transfer between two channels by using slow light based on electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) in a solid. The probe optical image is slowed due to steep dispersion induced by EIT. By applying an additional control field to an EIT-driven medium, the slowed image is transferred into two information channels. Image intensities between two information channels can be controlled by adjusting the intensities of the control fields. The similarity of output images is further analyzed. This image information transfer allows for manipulating images in a controlled fashion, and will be important in further information processing.

Electromagnetically-induced transparency and slow light in room temperature 4He*

Joyee Ghosh, Fabienne Goldfarb, J.-L. Le Gouët +2 more

Electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) in three-level Λ-systems is based on quantum interference effects involving coherence between the two lower levels, which allow propagation of a resonant probe light beam in the presence of a strong coupling field. We have observed transparency in ultra-narrow (<10 kHz) windows at the resonant 1.083 μm transition for purely electronic spins in gaseous 4 He* at room temperature. Slow light is an interesting outcome of the EIT phenomenon due to extreme dispersion within the narrow transparency window. We have obtained group delays of about 4 μs in a 2.5 cm long He* cell. A complete theoretical analysis explains our observations emphasizing the positive role of collisions. Slow light with 1-GHz Doppler broadening opens the door to applications of controllable large-bandwidth delays in radars.

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) technology can be used to achieve slow speed of light corresponding to normal dispersion (d n/d ω0 or d ng/d ω0),and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA)can be used to achieve ultrafast light or even negative group velocity of light corresponding to anomalous dispersion (d n/d ω0 or d ng /d ω0. The study of ultraslow light and ultrafast light is of interest in the research of the theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, electronics and the theory of information.
