Abstract

We describe experimental generation of states simultaneously squeezed in two collective spin components by quantum non-demolition measurement. These “planar squeezed states” improve phase estimation at all rotation angles.

Quantum nondemolition measurements of collective atomic spin

We have performed quantum nondemolition measurements on the collective spin of $\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{6}$ cesium atoms. In this way ensembles of atoms with sub-shot-noise fluctuations of a collective spin have been prepared. These observations open the way toward the generation of squeezed spin states of atoms.

We extend the covariance-matrix description of atom-light quantum interfaces to spin-1 systems including technical noise and decoherences. We use this description to predict and produce a planar squeezed state in a cold 87Rb ensemble.

We report the first demonstration of spin squeezing of a large-spin system via quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement. We observe 2 dB of metrological squeezing in an ensemble of ~ 106 laser cooled 87Rb atoms in the F = 1 hyperfine ground state.

We report on an experiment for generating singlet states in a cold atomic ensemble. We use quantum non-demolition measurement and feedback control to produce a macroscopic spin state with total spin zero and reduced spin fluctuations.
