Abstract

We investigate interactions by which wave packets are entangled and appropriate time dependent measures of this entanglement. We explore their symmetry properties and show that certain symmetries result in long lived superpositions and entangled states

Wave-packet entanglement

Mayer A. Landau, Carlos R. Stroud

We propose and analyze a scheme by which a many-particle system can be prepared in highly entangled wave-packet states. One of the particles is prepared initially in a quantum superposition of multiple coherent states and then coupled via a quadratic interaction Hamiltonian to a number of other particles. The system evolves into a highly entangled wave-packet state. An appropriate measure of this time-dependent entanglement is given. This scheme is applicable to a number of systems of interest in quantum-information science.

Entangling Schrödinger Cats: Methods, Measures, and Statistics

Mayer A. Landau, Carlos R. Stroud

We study wavepacket entanglement using generalized Schrödinger cat states of collections of oscillators with time dependent coupling. Entanglement is characterized as a function of pulse area using a generalized entanglement measure, and generalized displacement operator.

Decoherence in Phase Space

Mitsuko Murakami, G. W. Ford, Robert F. O’Connell

Much of the discussion of decoherence has been in terms of a particle moving in one dimension that is placed in an initial superposition state (a Schrödinger "cat" state) corresponding to two widely separated wave packets. Decoherence refers to the destruction of the interference term in the quantum probability function. Here, we stress that a quantitative measure of decoherence depends not only on the specific system being studied but also on whether one is considering coordinate, momentum or phase space. We show that this is best illustrated by considering Wigner phase space where the measure is again different. Analytic results for the time development of the Wigner distribution function for a two-Gaussian Schrodinger "cat" state have been obtained in the high-temperature limit (where decoherence can occur even for negligible dissipation) which facilitates a simple demonstration of our remarks.

Decoherence and long-lived Schroedinger cats in BEC

Diego A. R. Dalvit, Jacek Dziarmaga, Wojciech Hubert Zurek

We consider quantum superposition states in Bose-Einstein condensates. A decoherence rate for the Schrödinger cat is calculated and shown to be a significant threat to this macroscopic quantum superposition of BEC's. An experimental scenario is outlined where the decoherence rate due to the thermal cloud is dramatically reduced thanks to trap engineering and "symmetrization" of the environment. We show that under the proposed scenario the Schroedinger cat belongs to an approximate decoherence-free pointer subspace. This paper is a simplified and more pedagogical version of our previous work, Phys.Rev. A62, 13607 (2000).

Entanglement of multicomponent Schrödinger cats

We consider the class of two-mode superpositions of coherent states equidistant on the circle, invariant under rotation along the circle. We find the analytical expression for the Schmidt decomposition and the entanglement for such states.
