Abstract

With the rapid development of the technology of optical communication, the security in it has attracted more and more people's attention and even has become a critical component of national security. Compared with the traditional telecommunication, optical communication is regarded as a kind of secure communication because optical fiber, transmission medium of it, is immune to the typical issues of electromagnetic interference (EMI)/radio-frequency interference (RFI). However, the essential characteristics of the optical fiber make it vulnerable to a variety of attacks, including physical infrastructure attacks, eavesdropping, interception, and jamming. In this paper, we proposed a new model to inject the light into a communication fiber without damaging the cladding or core of it. From numberical calculation, the power of injected optical signal can reach to more than 20% of the input power. This level of injected signal is sufficient to interfere with the signal transported in the communication. So measures to combat this kind of inference and deception should be taken.

Technological developments in fiber-optic communications introduce new technologies with their own set of vulnerabilities. Vulnerability issues at the optical layer are explored to the degree necessary to lay a foundation for the development of security measures to protect the communications infrastructure and communications signal. Several means of infusing security into the development of new optical communication devices and optical fiber technology are presented.

Optical Layer Security in Fiber-Optic Networks

The physical layer of an optical network is vulnerable to a variety of attacks, including jamming, physical infrastructure attacks, eavesdropping, and interception. As the demand for network capacity grows dramatically, the issue of securing the physical layer of optical network cannot be overlooked. In this survey paper, we discuss the security threats in an optical network as well as present several existing optical techniques to improve the security. In the first part of this paper, we discuss various types of security threats that could appear in the optical layer of an optical network, including jamming, physical infrastructure attacks, eavesdropping, and interception. Intensive research has focused on improving optical network security, in the above specific areas. Real-time processing of the optical signal is essential in order to integrate security functionality at the physical layer while not undermining the true value of optical communications, which is its speed. Optical layer security benefits from the unique properties of optical processing-instantaneous response, broadband operation, electromagnetic immunity, compactness, and low latency. In the second part of this paper, various defenses against the security threats outlined in this paper are discussed, including optical encryption, optical code-division multiple access (CDMA) confidentiality, self-healing survivable optical rings, anti-jamming, and optical steganography.

Performance Analysis Of Secured Fiber Optics Communication Technologies In Computer Networking And Security Challenges

Rajamohan Parthasarathy, Preethy Ayyappan, Seow Soon Loong +2 more

Fiber Optics Communication is also one of the major branch which is widely used in current communication world. Due to several advantages of fiber optics communication over different conventional wired communication method it is having higher priority. Though fiber optic transmits large amount of data quickly over long distance, it is vulnerable to various security attacks. The fiber optic cable can be easily tapped. Fundamental improvements can be achieved for the entire network by increasing the optical network’s performance in terms of channel capacity, data rate, and processing speed. Furthermore, the security of the optical network has an impact on the security of the entire communication system. Optical network security can be effectively protected by fiber-based methods, including all optical signal processing, optical key distribution, optical steganography, and optical chaos-based communication. Fiber-based devices do not radiate an electromagnetic signature and are immune to electromagnetic interference. To provide end to end secure fiber optic communication, a special encryption algorithm based on Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is employed. The proposed encryption algorithm is simulated and the performance is analyzed. In this paper we are mostly dealing with the basics of fiber optics working principle, priority over other conventional communication system and role of fiber optics communication in computer networking and its vulnerabilities.

Optical communication encryption technology based on CPolSK modulation

Feihong Zhu

Communication technology is the cornerstone of the modern information society. Among them, optical communication technology, with its advantages of high bandwidth, low loss, and anti-interference, is gradually becoming the core transmission method of future information. However, optical communication systems still have security risks, such as signal eavesdropping, data tampering, and channel interference. To address these challenges, an optical communication encryption technology based on CPolSK modulation is proposed. The results show that this technology has a 16% higher anti-side-channel attack performance than traditional modulation at a lower signal-to-noise ratio, and in the free-space optical communication (FSO) scenario, the decoding accuracy of encrypted image information transmitted through optical communication exceeds 95%.

Comparative Analysis of Fiber Optical Network Security Using Optical Steganography and Encryption Method

Naemah Mubarakah, M. Agus Susanto Sinaga, Rika Wahyuni +3 more

The development of communication technology is currently progressing at an extremely rapid pace. One of the most widely applied technologies for data transmission is fiber optic communication, which uses light as the transmission medium. This technology enables data to be transmitted at very high speeds. However, in the process of data transmission, a security mechanism is required to protect information from unauthorized access. Attacks on fiber optic networks can lead to significant alterations in the data received compared to the data sent by the transmitter. This poses a serious risk, particularly when the transmitted data is confidential. Two methods that can be employed to secure fiber optic networks are Optical Steganography and Optical Encryption. The working principle of Optical Steganography involves hiding signals in public channels, while Optical Encryption functions by encrypting the transmitted signals. Both methods can be implemented using OptiSystem software. According to the results of this study, Optical Encryption demonstrates a higher level of reliability compared to Optical Steganography. Optical Encryption achieved a Q-Factor value of 14.65 and a BER of 6.55×10−49. In terms of Q-Factor, Optical Encryption is shown to be 16.3% more effective than Optical Steganography and 90.4% more efficient compared to designs without a security system.

Optical Covert Communication Based on Microwave Photonic Filter

Zhanqi Liu, Huatao Zhu, Xin Zhang

Optical communication networks are easy to be eavesdropped by attackers, and traditional encryption algorithms have become more and more difficult to ensure the security of information transmission. Different from the traditional encryption algorithm, optical covert communication processes the signal at the physical layer, and improves the security and reliability of the system by hiding the optical signal in the public channel. Based on a typical microwave photonic filter, an optical covert communication scheme is proposed. On the one hand, the microwave photonic filter makes the scheme imperceptible. On the other hand, the randomness of complementary coding makes the scheme confidential. The feasibility of the scheme is analyzed theoretically, and the experimental results show that the covert channel is successfully transmitted over 50 km single-mode fiber.
