Abstract

We present a theoretical model to describe polarization-entanglement generation by spontaneous parametric down conversion in a transverse pump configuration. It takes into account the effect of a resonant microcavity for the pump beam and gives a direct link between the level of generated entanglement and the spatial profile of the pump beam. A pumping scheme leading to the generation of high quality Bell states is proposed.

Polarization Entanglement from Parametric Down-Conversion with a LED Pump

Wuhong Zhang, Diefei Xu, Lixiang Chen

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is a reliable platform for entanglement generation. Routinely, a coherent laser beam is an essential prerequisite for pumping the nonlinear crystal. Here we break this barrier to generate polarization entangled photon pairs by using a commercial light-emitting diode (LED) source to serve as the pump beam. This effect is counterintuitive, as the LED source is of extremely low spatial coherence, which is transferred during the down-conversion process to the biphoton wavefunction. However, the type-II phase-matching condition naturally filters the specific frequency and wavelength of LED light exclusively to participate in SPDC such that localized polarization Bell states can be generated, regardless of the global incoherence over the full transverse plane. In our experiment, we characterize the degree of LED light-induced polarization entanglement in the standard framework of the violation of Bell inequality. We have achieved the Bell value $S=2.33\pm 0.097$, obviously surpassing the classical bound $S=2$ and thus witnessing the quantum entanglement. Our work can be extended to prepare polarization entanglement by using other natural light sources, such as sunlight and bio-light, which holds promise for electricity-free quantum communications in outer space.

Controlling polarization entanglement in biphotons generated with partially spatially coherent pump beam

Preeti Sharma, Nishant Kumar Pathak, Bhaskar Kanseri

We theoretically study the polarization entanglement and the non-local correlations manifested by biphotons using measures as concurrence and CHSH Bell test, generated in the spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) process for partially spatially coherent pump, affected by the spatial walk-off effects of the extraordinary beam. The study has been carried out for a well-known scheme for generating polarization entanglement utilizing non-collinear, frequency degenerate SPDC process in paired type-I uniaxial crystals. It is found that the polarization entanglement changes drastically with variation in spatial coherence of the pump, offering a possibility to realize a tunable source of polarization entanglement. The study reveals the overriding role of aperture size in compensation of the effect of spatial coherence of pump on the polarization entanglement and non-local correlations, especially in the conservation of polarization entanglement for incoherent and partially coherent pump beams. Free-space quantum secure communication utilizing these quantum states possessing maximal entanglement and partially spatially coherent properties would essentially offer robustness to the losses on propagation through atmospheric turbulence, resulting in a significant enhancement in the key rate.

Direct Bell States Generation on a III-V Semiconductor Chip at Room Temperature

Adeline Orieux, A. Eckstein, Aristide Lemaître +7 more

We demonstrate the direct generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs at room temperature and telecom wavelength in an AlGaAs semiconductor waveguide. The source is based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion with a counterpropagating phase-matching scheme. The quality of the two-photon state is assessed by the reconstruction of the density matrix giving a raw fidelity to a Bell state of 0.83; a theoretical model, taking into account the experimental parameters, provides ways to understand and control the amount of entanglement. Its compatibility with electrical injection, together with the high versatility of the generated two-photon state, make this source an attractive candidate for completely integrated quantum photonics devices.

Experimental generation of polarization entanglement from spontaneous parametric down-conversion pumped by spatiotemporally highly incoherent light

Cheng Li, Boris Braverman, Girish Ashok Kulkarni +1 more

The authors experimentally demonstrate the generation of polarization entanglement through spontaneous parametric down-conversion pumped by a spatiotemporally highly incoherent light beam. However, polarization entanglement from the spatiotemporally incoherent pump is susceptible to degradation. Theoretical analysis shows that the degradation stems from the coupling between the spatiotemporal and polarization degrees of freedom, which is introduced by the birefringence and dispersion of the nonlinear crystal.

Controlling the transverse correlation in QPM parametric down-conversion

Olavo Cosme, A. Delgado, G. Lima +2 more

In this work we study the transverse spatial correlation of the pair of photons generated via the process of spontaneous parametric frequency down-conversion, in periodically poled non-linear crystals illuminated by a pulsed laser beam. It is well known that the two-photon state generated in quasi-phase matching (QPM) configurations depends explicitly on the characteristics of the pump beam, on the crystal modulated non-linearity, and on the detection geometry. This has allowed the development of several techniques for controlling the biphoton spectral and spatial properties. Here we discuss another technique for implementing the spatial entanglement modification in QPM gratings. We show, theoretically and experimentally, that in nearly collinear geometries, the spatial shape modulation of the pump beam allows for the control of the biphoton transverse spatial correlation.
