Abstract

We show that quantum memories can be implemented in atomic ensembles in a multi-spatial-mode regime using collective Raman scattering. It can be accomplished by optimization of diffusional decoherence which we measure by a novel method.

Spatially multimode Raman scattering: Optical memory and new, direct method for measuring diffusion

Radosław Chrapkiewicz, Wojciech Wasilewski

Here we present results of measuring spatially multimode collective Raman scattering in warm Rubidium vapors. It is the first to our knowledge generation, storing and retrieval of spatially multimode light in such process. We also suggest a new, direct method of measuring diffusion coefficients by measuring decoherence of collective excitations in the dark.

Quantum Memory with Optically Trapped Atoms

Chih‐Sung Chuu, Thorsten Straßel, Bo Zhao +6 more

We report the experimental demonstration of quantum memory for collective atomic states in a far-detuned optical dipole trap. Generation of the collective atomic state is heralded by the detection of a Raman scattered photon and accompanied by storage in the ensemble of atoms. The optical dipole trap provides confinement for the atoms during the quantum storage while retaining the atomic coherence. We probe the quantum storage by cross correlation of the photon pair arising from the Raman scattering and the retrieval of the atomic state stored in the memory. Nonclassical correlations are observed for storage times up to 60 mus.

Quantum state entanglement and readout of collective atomic-ensemble modes and optical wave packets by stimulated Raman scattering

M. G. Raymer

A proposal is made for the creation of macroscopic quantum states of collective atomic-ensemble variables by the use of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), followed by conditional optical measurement. After the completion of the SRS process, one is able to reverse the process and to return all the atoms to their ground states in such a way that reads out an arbitrary quantum state of the collective atomic field and writes this state onto the outgoing optical field. This scheme can be used for the creation of entanglement between two distant atomic ensembles. The quantum analysis of the SRS process treats one-dimensional spatial-temporal propagation accurately. Remarkably, it is found that this multimode problem can be simplified to a two-mode problem involving spatial-temporal wave-packet modes of the optical and atomic collective fields. This improves the understanding of the entanglement created in this system.

Wavevector multiplexed atomic quantum memory via spatially-resolved single-photon detection

Michal P. Parniak, Michał Dąbrowski, Mateusz Mazelanik +3 more

Parallelized quantum information processing requires tailored quantum memories to simultaneously handle multiple photons. The spatial degree of freedom is a promising candidate to facilitate such photonic multiplexing. Using a single-photon resolving camera, we demonstrate a wavevector multiplexed quantum memory based on a cold atomic ensemble. Observation of nonclassical correlations between Raman scattered photons is confirmed by an average value of the second-order correlation function [Formula: see text] in 665 separated modes simultaneously. The proposed protocol utilizing the multimode memory along with the camera will facilitate generation of multi-photon states, which are a necessity in quantum-enhanced sensing technologies and as an input to photonic quantum circuits.

Off-resonant Raman-echo quantum memory for inhomogeneously broadened atoms in a cavity

Sergey A. Moiseev

A scheme of photon echo-based quantum memory in the optimal optical QED cavity with off-resonant Raman atomic transition is proposed. The scheme employs the atomic ensembles characterized by an optically thin resonant transition and natural inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant line composed of the arbitrary narrow homogeneous spectral components. The scheme provides robust and quite simple coherent control of the light atoms dynamics that can be implemented by using an existing optical technique and opens a practical way for realization of the efficient long-lived multimode optical quantum memory.
