Abstract

We present a theoretical framework for the calculation of photon-yield spectra from radiative-cascade decays of photoexcited helium atoms in a static electric field for incident photon energies below the first ($N=1$) ionization threshold. The present theory takes full account of the singlet-triplet mixing among the singly excited states with principal quantum numbers $n\ensuremath{\lesssim}10$. The model predicts the enhancement of transition probabilities to triplet final states due to the field-induced mixing. In particular, for a field strength of 9.17 kV/cm, polarization of incident photons perpendicular to the field, and a 4 meV broad excitation function tuned to the $1s6p\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{}^{1}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}P$ states, the $1s6\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1s2p\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{}^{3}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}P$ and $1s5\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1s2p\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{}^{3}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}P$ emitted photon yields are predicted to be about 70 times and 20 times lower, respectively, than the photon yields for transitions to the corresponding singlet final states.

Stark effect of atomic Helium singlet lines

We present experimental and theoretical investigations of the He spectral series 2S1−nQ1 (n=3÷9, Q=S,P,D,…,n−1) and 2P1−nQ1 (n=3÷9, Q=S,P,D,…,n−1) in electric fields up to 1635 kV/cm. Apart from the allowed transitions with |ΔL|=1, the transitions with |ΔL|=0,2,3,…—without field strictly forbidden—were observed. Several He patterns become similar to hydrogen patterns, which means they are nearly symmetric and show in higher fields nearly linear Stark shifts. The applied fields are high enough that patterns belonging to neighboring principal quantum numbers (for n>6) begin to overlap, which leads to interesting level-anticrossing effects. The experimental results are compared with numerical calculations, taking into account mixing between states of different principal quantum numbers and between singlet and triplet states. The agreement between experimental and theoretical results is quite good.

Photon yields resulting from radiative cascades of photoexcited helium singly and doubly excited states in a dc electric field are presented. The combined effect of the spin-orbit and the field-induced mixing on the yields are examined.

Experimental confirmation of photon-induced spin-flip transitions in helium via triplet metastable yield spectra

Jan‐Erik Rubensson, Angelica Moise, A. Mihelič +3 more

Doubly excited states below the $N=2$ ionization threshold are populated by exciting helium atoms in a supersonic beam with monochromatized synchrotron radiation. The fluorescence decay of these states triggers a radiative cascade back to the ground state with large probability to populate long lived singlet and triplet helium metastable states. The yield of metastables is measured using a multichannel plate detector after the beam has passed a singlet-quenching discharge lamp. The variation of the yield observed with the lamp switched on or off is related to the triplet-singlet mixing of the doubly excited states.

Coherent excitation of the singlet-triplet mixed 1s4f state of helium

Jingbo B. Wang, Jim Williams, A. T. Stelbovics +2 more

In this paper, we present a detailed theoretical description for the coherent electron-impact excitation, the subsequent time evolution, and the cascading decay process of the singlet-triplet mixed $1s4f$ state of helium. The excitation amplitude and phase of each sublevel of this state are related to measurable coincidence intensities and polarizations of the emitted photons. It is found that the intensity and polarization of the emitted photons are time modulated due to the singlet and triplet mixing in the $1s4f$ state.

Laser spectroscopy of electric-field 1s3d anticrossings of He I

D. Kaiser, Gebhard von Oppen

Singlet-triplet anticrossings of 1s3d Stark sublevels of He I were investigated by inducing resonance transitions from the 1s2p 3 P level to the 1s3d Stark states at electric fields 80 kV cm -1 <F z <100 kV cm -1 . The measurements were performed using a beam of metastable helium atoms perpendicular to a 588 nm laser beam from a tunable dye laser. From the energy separations of closest approach of four anticrossings we deduced the radial integrals h off 3p =(3660+or-200) MHz and h off 3d (652.6+or-1.0) MHz of the singlet-triplet off-diagonal matrix elements of the spin-orbit coupling for the 1s3p and 1s3d configurations. They agree with recently calculated values.

Effect of electric fields on the decay branching ratio of Pe1 doubly excited states in helium measured by time-resolved fluorescence

M. Žitnik, Francis Jean Penent, P. Lablanquie +5 more

We have measured the lifetimes of $^{1}P^{e}$ $(n=9--12)$ doubly excited states in static electric fields $(1--6\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kV}∕\mathrm{cm})$ by observing the decay of the fluorescence signal as a function of time. The effects of the field on these helium states below the second ionization threshold are twofold: their excitation becomes possible due to the Stark mixing with the optically allowed $^{1}P^{o}$ series, and their lifetime is strongly modified by the opening of the autoionization channel, not accessible in zero field. Although the electric field represents only a tiny perturbation of the atomic potential, a substantial shortening of the lifetimes below $100\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ps}$ is observed. This is the simplest quantum system where the ratio of autoionization to fluorescence decay probability can be effectively controlled by an electric field of moderate strength.
