Abstract

Abstract We propose a non-collinear experimental scheme for the joint generation of two amplitudesqueezed beams at the frequencies u\ and u>2, fundamental and second harmonics of a Nd:YAG laser pulse. The scheme consists of two successive steps, both involving second-order non-linear interactions in ß - BaB2O4 non-linear crystals. One of the output beams show subPoissonian photon statistics, and this allows to use photodetection instead of homodyne detection for diagnostics

Binary Quantum Communication using Squeezed Light: Numerical, Simulation, and Experimental Resuts

R.S. Fyath, Ismael Shanan Desher

In this paper, the squeezed quantum state is generated using an optical parametric oscillator via a spontaneous parametric down conversion technique to investigate squeezed states with quantum noise in one quadrature below the standard quantum limit at the expense of the other. The setup involves four main parts: generation of Nd-YAG second harmonic via a ring resonator, squeezed cavity with a nonlinear crystal inside to generate the squeezed state, Pound-Drever-Hall technique to stabilize the laser in the squeezed cavity and balanced homodyne receiver with high efficiency to detect the squeezed state. A comparison in error probability is addressed between the quantum coherent classical and the quantum squeezed non-classical state in the presence of thermal noise and the dissipation. It is found that with extremely low number of photons, the squeezed state is robust against channel noise.

Generation of non-classical optical fields by a beam splitter with second-order nonlinearity

Hari Prakash, Devendra Kumar Mishra

We propose quantum-mechanical model of a beam splitter with second-order nonlinearity and show that non-classical features such as squeezing and sub-Poissonian photon statistics of optical fields can be generated in output fundamental and second harmonic modes when we mix coherent light beams via such a nonlinear beam splitter.

Generation of continuous-wave bright-squeezed light

Stephan Schiller, Gerd Breitenbach, Silvania F. Pereira +3 more

We discuss different approaches to the generation of bright amplitude-squeezed light using second-order nonlinear effects in optical cavities. A 0.2 mW beam at 1064 nm exhibiting 4 dB squeezing has been generated using a phase-sensitive type-I parametric amplifier pumped by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser. In applying frequency-doubling processes to the generation of amplitude-squeezed light, the appearance of parasitic parametric oscillation must be considered. This effect has been observed in a singly-resonant frequency doubler. We also describe recent developments in optical cavity design for doubly-resonant frequency-doubling. Finally, we show theoretically that phase-mismatched second-harmonic generation in an optical cavity can be employed to generate a strong effective Kerr nonlinearity. This system appears promising for achieving optical bistability and for generating squeezed light of high power. Keywords: Non-classical light, squeezed light, amplitude squeezing, nonlinear op...

Precision measurements with twin beams of light

Prem Kumar

The generation of twin beams of light from an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) pumped by the second harmonic of a mode-locked and Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser has recently been reported.1 The intensity noises on the direct- detected signal and idler beams at the output of the OPA were observed to be correlated by more than 15 dB, and the subtracted noise fell below the quantum limit by up to 7 dB (80%). With the same OPA it is much harder to generate and detect a highly squeezed beam of light.

Nonlinear dynamics and quantum noise for competing χ^(2) nonlinearities

Monika A. M. Marte

The mutual influence of second-harmonic generation and nondegenerate downconversion inside the same cavity is studied. The threshold behavior and the stability of a semiclassical solution with all four modes oscillating resonantly is investigated. It is shown that under certain conditions the self-pulsing instability that occurs in second-harmonic generation is absent in the combined system. The squeezing spectra for the quadrature-phase amplitudes in the second harmonic and the fundamental, as well as the photon statistics in the downconverted modes, are derived analytically. As one of the various nonclassical features of this system, the second harmonic is found to exhibit excellent noise suppression at very large frequencies, with the frequency component of best squeezing being tunable by the pump parameter. The intricate interaction of the two nonlinear processes can give rise to twin beams of correlated photons, with sub-Poissonian statistics in each beam. These results are contrasted with the results for each nonlinear process by itself.
