Abstract

Theoretical study on magnetic properties of pseudo-one-dimensional (pseudo-1D) quantum spin systems is made by developing new useful theoretical methods.Particular attention is paid to magnetic phenomena in which interchain coupling plays an important role.

Weakly Coupled Antiferromagnetic Quantum Spin Chains

Ziqiang Wang

Quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets formed by a $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattice of weakly coupled spin- $\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains are studied by combining exact results in one-dimension and renormalization group analyses of the interchain correlations. It is shown that $d$-dimensional magnetic long-range order develops at zero temperature for infinitesimal antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic interchain couplings. In the presence of weak bond alternations, the order-disorder transition occurs at a finite interchain coupling. Relevances to the lightly doped quantum antiferromagnets and multilayer quantum Hall systems are discussed.

Magnetic and thermal properties of a Haldane chain with one-dimensional ferromagnetic chains in square lattice

Joon Han Lee, Marie Kratochvílová, Zahra-Sadat Yamani +4 more

Since Haldane conjectured that ground state of one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet has a finite spin gap for integer spins, while gapless excitations for half-odd integer spins, it has inspired lots of theoretical and experimental studies on low-dimensional quantum magnets. Several one-dimensional chain systems of integer spins, so called Haldane chain, have been discovered and studied, such as CsNiCl3, Y2BaNiO5, PbNi2V2O8, SrNi2V2O8, AgVP2S6. It has been known that most of the Haldane chain has antiferromagnetic coupling for the intrachain exchange interaction. Recently, we have found a Haldane chain compound in which antiferromagnetic order is accompanied by antiferromagnetic interchain coupling between one-dimensional ferromagnetic chains below 30.5 Kelvin. In this presentation, we present comprehensive study of its magnetic and thermal properties.

Theoretical studies of quantum spin systems

D.J. Coombes

In this thesis we present the results of calculations of the properties of quantum spin systems. \nThe majority of the work is concerned with one dimensional spin chains and the particular \neffects that reduced dimensionality produce. The final chapter describes some earlier work on \nmixed valence manganite compounds. \nWe demonstrate one derivation of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian and discuss its applicability to \nmodelling magnetic systems both in three and one dimension. We discuss systems that are \nexactly soluble and the failure of spin wave theory in I-D. The Density-Matrix \nRenormalisation Group (DMRG) method is discussed in detail as is the extension to finite \ntemperature (TMRG). \nWe show results of calculations on a number of S=1/2 and S=l models and fundamental \ndifferences in their excitation spectra is observed. The thermodynamics of these systems have \nbeen obtained over a wide temperature range. In addition, excellent agreement with \nexperiment is shown for a number of quasi one dimensional compounds. The DMRG and \nTMRG are shown to be very competitive and accurate methods of studying such systems, \nespecially in the case of gapped systems. \nThe final chapter discusses the role of correlated magnetic clusters in determining the magnetic \nproperties of mixed valence manganites at temperatures near the Curie temperature. Our \nresults are supported by recent direct experimental observation of the formation of these \nclusters. We also briefly discuss some preliminary results regarding the effect of an interface \non the electronic and magnetic properties of these compounds.

Role of the spin anisotropy of the interchain interaction in weakly coupled antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains*

Yuchen Fan, Rong Yu

In quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) quantum antiferromagnets, the complicated interplay of intrachain and interchain exchange couplings may give rise to rich phenomena. Motivated by recent progress on field-induced phase transitions in the q1D antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound YbAlO3, we study the phase diagram of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with Ising anisotropic interchain couplings under a longitudinal magnetic field via large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and investigate the role of the spin anisotropy of the interchain coupling on the ground state of the system. We find that the Ising anisotropy of the interchain coupling can significantly enhance the longitudinal spin correlations and drive the system to an incommensurate AFM phase at intermediate magnetic fields, which is understood as a longitudinal spin density wave (LSDW). With increasing field, the ground state changes to a canted AFM order with transverse spin correlations. We further provide a global phase diagram showing how the competition between the LSDW and the canted AFM states is tuned by the Ising anisotropy of the interchain coupling.

Dynamics of Coupled Quantum Spin Chains

Heinz J. Schulz

Static and dynamical properties of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chains are treated using a mean-field approximation for the interchain coupling and exact results for the resulting effective one-dimensional problem. Results for staggered magnetization, N\'eel temperature, and spin wave excitations are in agreement with experiments on ${\mathrm{KCuF}}_{3}$. The existence of a narrow longitudinal mode is predicted. The results are in agreement with general scaling arguments, contrary to spin wave theory.

Antiferromagnetically coupled alternating spin chains

A. E. Trumper, C. J. Gazza

The effect of antiferromagnetic interchain coupling in alternating spin-(1,1/2) chains is studied by means of spin-wave theory and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). In particular, two limiting cases are investigated, the two-leg ladder and its two-dimensional (2D) generalization. Results of the ground-state properties like energy, spin gap, magnetizations, and correlation functions are reported for the whole range of the interchain coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}.$ For the 2D case the spin-wave results predict a smooth dimensional crossover from 1D to 2D keeping the ground state always ordered. For the ladder system, the DMRG results show that any ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}>0$ drives the system to a gapped ground state. Furthermore the behavior of the correlation functions closely resemble the uniform spin-1/2 ladder. For ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ lower than 0.3, however, the gap behaves quadratically as $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\sim}{0.6J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}^{2}.$ Finally, it is argued that the behavior of the spin gap for an arbitrary number of mixed coupled spin chains is analogous to that of the uniform spin-1/2 chains.
