Abstract

We proposed a theoretical model to investigate the polarization pulling effect in bi-directionally pumped degenerate Raman assisted fiber optical parameter amplifiers (RA-FOPAs) using randomly birefringent fibers. The contributions of chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion (PMD), Raman gain, and nonlinear effects to the phase matching in RA-FOPAs are investigated. We characterize four different states of polarization pulling in RA-FOPAs. We found that broadband polarization attraction can be obtained in the optimum phase-matching state of the bi-directionally pumped RA-FOPAs when the parametric pump power is chosen to avoid deep saturation of the Raman gain.

Characterization of Polarization Pulling in Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifiers

Shao Hao Wang, P. K. A. Wai

In fiber optical parametric amplifiers (FOPAs), the output states of polarization (SOPs) of both the signal and the idler are affected by the pump SOP through the polarization pulling effect. We proposed a normalized model to characterize the general dynamics of polarization pulling in degenerated pump FOPAs. By using this model, we determined the relationship between the output degree of polarization (DOP) and the gain of the FOPAs over three orders of magnitude changes in polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) coefficient. We demonstrated numerically that when fibers with typical PMD coefficients are used, the output signals of the FOPAs can achieve higher DOP than those of co-propagating fiber Raman amplifiers, which depends on whether the parametric gain is sufficiently large to compensate the PMD-induced phase mismatch. We also found that for FOPAs using different types of fibers with moderate PMD coefficients, this DOP-gain relationship exhibits highly similar behaviors. We thus adopted a set of modified empirical formulas to analyze this relationship. This formula can also describe the relationship between the output DOP and the conversion efficiency of the idler. The results indicate that in all cases studied, FOPAs achieve much stronger polarization pulling to the idlers than the signals.

Impact of phase modulation and parametric gain on signal polarization in an anomalously dispersive optical fiber

We theoretically and experimentally study changes with pump power in the polarization of an optical signal as it simultaneously experiences Kerr-effect-induced birefringence and four-wave-mixing-based parametric amplification from a copropagating pump in an optical fiber. It is shown that the changes caused by the two nonlinear optical effects are orthogonal to each other in the Stokes space. Results also show that the pump polarization state works as an attractor for signal polarization. The implications of this feature to fiber parametric amplifiers and entangled-photon sources are discussed, and a fiber polarization switch is demonstrated.

Parametric and Raman amplification in photonic crystal fiber

We study the interplay between parametric and Raman gain in photonic crystal fibers by taking into account the vector nature of the electric field, the fiber frequency dependent birefringence, the Kerr nonlinear coefficient, the Raman gain profile and chromatic dispersion. In particular, we show that an accurate representation of the frequency dependence of the nonlinear and dispersive properties of a photonic crystal fiber is essential for correctly describing the overall gain profile for a probe signal at large frequency detuning from a continuous wave or pulsed pump. For example, we found that fourth and higher order dispersion have a striking influence on the spectrum of modulation polarization instability gain in both the high and low birefringence regime, in that the vector parametric gain is suppressed above a critical level of linear birefringence. We validated the theory by experimental observations of vector parametric amplification in high birefringence holey fiber with triple defects.

Experimental investigation of SRS polarization pulling in depleted pump regime for various pump SOPs

Robert K. Cybulski, Krzysztof Perlicki

This article presents an experimental investigation of polarization pulling based on stimulated Raman scattering induced by a continuous, fully polarized pump wave in an optical fibre. By means of probe wave states of polarization aggregation, degree of polarization and gain analysis, an assessment of all-optical polarization control, repolarization and amplification in a standard single mode fibre in depleted pump regime is presented. Polarization pulling is proved to be dependent on fibre length, pump power, and pump state of polarization, with respect to pump depletion effect, acting oppositely to the polarization pulling effect. Authors evaluate results aiming to obtain a configuration of stimulated Raman scattering parameters, which allows for the most effective polarization pulling, with respect to statistical stability of the process measured by standard deviation of polarization degree and polarization-dependent gain of the probe wave. The highest polarization attraction efficiency was obtained for 15 km, 0.97 W and the horizontal polarization state of the pump wave.

Polarization independence and phase-sensitive parametric amplification

M.E. Marhic

We investigate the possibility of obtaining phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) in a fiber-optic parametric amplifier (OPA), with gain independent of the state of polarization of the input signal, i.e., polarization-independent amplification. We consider both a single OPA with two orthogonal pumps and a polarization-diversity scheme. In either case, PSA with maximum gain is possible, provided that the signal and idler are in suitably matched polarization states; this condition is naturally satisfied by the output fields of an upstream polarization-insensitive amplifier of the same type. Two polarization-multiplexed signals can then be simultaneously amplified in the PSA. The low noise figure can also be obtained with these types of PSA. However, in general, this favorable situation is not maintained if the signal and idler states of polarization drift together due to birefringence fluctuations in a transmission fiber preceding the PSA.

Taking account of the coupling differential equations under the effect of Stokes and anti-Stokes for the pump wave linearly polarized and aligned with the x-axis direction, the gain coefficient for the Stokes and anti-Stokes have been derived from simultaneously act of stimulated Raman scattering and parametric amplification in the same x polarization. The Lorenz model of parallel gain coefficient is introduced in this equation. The correlation between the gain spectrum and correlative parameter studied in dispersion-shifted fiber. The conclusion shows that gain spectrum is dissymmetrical with the Stokes and anti-Stokes wave and has no relation with third-order dispersion. At the same time, the ratio of Stokes and anti-Stokes |E_(ax)/E_(sx)| increases with frequency shift, then it rapidly reduced.
