Using the infinite density matrix renormalization group method on an infinite cylinder geometry, we characterize the
1/3 fractional Chern insulator state in the Haldane honeycomb lattice model at $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/3$ filling of the lowest band and check its stability. We investigate the chiral and topological properties of this state through (i) its Hall conductivity, (ii) the topological entanglement entropy, (iii) the
U(1) charge spectral flow of the many-body entanglement spectrum, and (iv) the charge of the anyons. In contrast to numerical methods restricted to small finite sizes, the infinite cylinder geometry allows us to access and characterize directly the metal to fractional Chern insulator transition. We find indications it is first order and no evidence of other competing phases. Since our approach does not rely on any band or subspace projection, we are able to prove the stability of the fractional state in the presence of interactions exceeding the band gap, as has been suggested in the literature. As a by-product we discuss the signatures of Chern insulators within this technique.
We study fermions on a triangular lattice model that exhibits topological flatbands characterized by nonzero Chern numbers. Our scheme stems from the well-known Hofstadter model but the next-nearest-neighbor hopping is introduced, which is crucial for tuning the lowest band to be nearly flat. Differing from previous proposals with the necessity of multiparticle interactions, we consider the more realistic long-range dipolar interaction combined with two-body short-range attractions between fermions. We show the realization of the non-Abelian $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ Moore-Read fractional Chern insulators, and strong evidence for the existence of the more exotic $\ensuremath{\nu}=3/5$ Read-Rezayi fractional Chern insulators. Our results provide insights for the experimental realization of these exotic states by realistic two-body interactions and thus facilitates the implementation of the universal topological quantum computation.
We study two models for spinless fermions featuring topologically nontrivial bands characterized by Chern numbers C=±1 at fractional filling. Using exact diagonalization, we show that, even for infinitely strong nearest-neighbor repulsion, the ground states of these models belong to the recently discovered class of quantum liquids called fractional Chern insulators (FCI). Thus, we establish that FCI states can arise even if interaction strengths are arbitrarily larger than the noninteracting band gap, going beyond the limits in which FCI states have been previously studied. The strong-coupling FCI states, therefore, depart from the usual isolated-band picture that parallels the fractional quantum Hall effect in Landau levels and demonstrate how a topologically ordered state can arise in a truly multiband system.
