Sub-Poissonian Electronic and Photonic Noise Generation in Semiconductor Junctions

Paul J. Edwards

This paper addresses sub-Poissonian electronic and photonic noise generation in semiconductor junctions. Recent theoretical and technical advances in the understanding and generation of quantum noise-suppressed (‘quiet’) light have emphasised the links between photonic and electronic shot noise. Shot-noise suppression and single electron–photon control through the operation of the collective and single-electron Coulomb blockade mechanisms are described.

Preparation and measurement of tunable high-power sub-Poissonian light using twin beams

Hongxin Zou, Shuqin Zhai, Juan Guo +2 more

Widely frequency tunable bright sub-Poissonian field preparation has been experimentally achieved with quantum-correlated twin beams in the continuously variable regime. The noise of the sub-Poissonian field is reduced to more than 2 dB below the shot-noise level throughout the entire wavelength-tunable range of 7.4 nm. A maximum noise reduction of 45% (2.6 dB) is observed. The statistical distribution of a sub-Poissonian field is also obtained.

Sub-Poissonian Number Differences in Four-Wave Mixing of Matter Waves

Jean-Christophe Jaskula, Marie Bonneau, Guthrie B. Partridge +6 more

We demonstrate sub-Poissonian number differences in four-wave mixing of Bose-Einstein condensates of metastable helium. The collision between two Bose-Einstein condensates produces a scattering halo populated by pairs of atoms of opposing velocities, which we divide into several symmetric zones. We show that the atom number difference for opposing zones has sub-Poissonian noise fluctuations, whereas that of nonopposing zones is well described by shot noise. The atom pairs produced in a dual number state are well adapted to sub-shot-noise interferometry and studies of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-type nonlocality tests.
