Abstract

Noise squeezing of intensity difference between the pair of sum modes may be generated in a cascade laser of Λ and V quantum-beats. The best achievable squeezing is up to 50% below the shot noise limit. This new kind of squeezed lasers has potential for quantum communications and precision measurements.

Lambda quantum-beat laser with another laser cascaded

Xiangming Hu, Jin-sheng Peng

In this paper we investigate the quantum statistical properties in a cascade laser system with the lower transition being in a quantum-beat configuration. It is shown that a type of three-mode squeezing may be generated. The fluctuations of the intensity difference between the sum-mode from the quantum-beat and the cascade single mode may be reduced below the shot-noise limit. The best achievable noise reduction is up to 50%. Good squeezing occurs when the sum mode and the cascade single mode have normalized intensities much larger than unity and the intensity difference is much smaller than the respective intensity.

Squeezed Quantum-Beat Laser Without Inversion

Xiangming Hu, Jin-sheng Peng

A quantum-beat laser without inversion is proposed for producing two-mode suqeezing. Using the dressed-atom-dressed-mode approach, the master equation is derived and the variances in the sum mode intensity and in the relative amplitude and phase are calculated. When the laser is operated well above threshold, the intensity fluctuations in the sum mode are reduced below the shot noise limit with an optimum Mandel parameter of -0.5. At the same time, the fluctuations in the relative amplitude and phase are retained at their vaccum noise levels.

Dynamic quantum noise reduction in a cascade laser with and without inversion

Xiangming Hu, PENG JIN-SHENG

In this paper we investigate the effect of two incoherent steps on the statistical properties of cascade lasers without and with inversion. It is demonstrated that the noise in the intensity difference may be reduced 50% below the shot noise. A simple physical explanation of the mechanism for squeezing is given.

Interference-induced three-beam quantum squeezing enhancement

Yan-Fen Zhou, Xiaochun Li, Yanbo Lou +3 more

Quantum squeezed states, exhibiting noise reduction below the shot-noise limit, are important resources in quantum optics. The degree of quantum squeezing directly influences the performance of physical systems, making the achievement of higher squeezing levels essential. Here, by utilizing the phase-sensitive cascaded four-wave mixing (PSCFWM) processes, we experimentally demonstrate the enhancement of three-beam quantum squeezing. The intensity-difference squeezing among the three output beams from PSCFWM processes is about 8.2 dB, which is enhanced by about 1.3 dB compared with that generated by phase-insensitive cascaded four-wave mixing processes. Our scheme provides an effective way for enhancing multi-beam quantum squeezing and holds promise for applications in multimode quantum correlated imaging and multiparameter quantum precision measurement.

Observation of Quantum Noise Reduction on Twin Laser Beams

We have used a two-mode optical parametric oscillator operating above threshold to generate high-intensity twin beams which exhibit quantum correlations. The noise power measured on the intensity difference between two such beams is reduced by 30% below the shot-noise limit. Noise reduction is observed over a broad range of frequencies.

Generation of intensity squeezed light with VCSELs: theory and experiment

Wolfgang E. Elsaesser, Jean-Luc C. Vey, Karsten Auen +1 more

We present comprehensive investigations on the polarization resolved quantum noise behavior of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) with various cavity designs. These experiments are accompanied by detailed studies using a semiclassical approach, first, to calculate and model theoretically the amplitude fluctuations and correlations of a two orthogonal polarization-mode semiconductor laser as realized by a VCSEL, and second, to explore theoretically the squeezing potential of VCSELs. First, we find that the possible amount of squeezing with VCSELs should be superior as compared to edge emitting lasers for ideal single mode operation and under comparable pumping conditions. Second, we demonstrate that there exists the possibility of squeezing also in the two-mode regime besides sub-shot noise emission in the well known ideal single-mode operation regime configuring the recently published first experimental demonstration of the generation of amplitude squeezed light with VCSELs. Third, we demonstrate for the first time the generation of amplitude squeezed light by a lateral and polarization single mode VCSEL with the achievement of a maximum squeezing of 0.9 dB. Finally the future trends, the applications and the limitations of these non-classical states of light with respect to metrology applications are discussed.
