Decay-Induced Interference Effect on Photon Correlation in a Nearly Equispaced Three-Level Ladder Atom

Abstract

We investigate the effect of decay-induced interference on photon correlation in a nearly equispaced three-level driven ladder atom. It is found that the combination of destructive interference and two-photon resonance are responsible for the occurrence of nonclassical correlations. In addition, the bunching or antibunching behavior of the two emission processes can be controlled by the relative phase of the two applied fields attributed to the phase control spontaneous emission enhancement or cancellation.

Control of optical properties of materials by atomic coherence and quantum interference effects

We investigate the spontaneous emission spectrum of a three-level atom coherently driven by a microwave field. The microwave excitation establishes a coherent link between the bottom two levels, and as a consequence induces the quantum interference of previously independent decay pathways. As the decay pathways differ from one another by an odd number of stimulated emission processes, the spontaneous emission spectrum acquires a dependence on the phase of the excitation field, a feature that is absent in other resonance fluorescence phenomena.

Multiphoton quantum interference on a dipole-forbidden transition

Uzma Akram, Jörg Evers, Christoph H. Keitel

We investigate the effect of an intense low-frequency field on the population decay of an excited two-level atom, where the two states are connected by a dipole-forbidden transition. In addition to the natural two-photon spontaneous decay, the low-frequency field gives rise to induced two-photon processes, where one of the two photons is spontaneous. Due to the low frequency of the applied field, the induced decay pathways may interfere with each other. We show how varying the parameters of the applied field allows switching between constructive and destructive interference, thereby increasing or decreasing the induced transition rate as compared to the rate without interference. As all relevant competing transitions are of the same multiphoton order, the system is a promising candidate to verify the idea of spontaneous-emission interference induced by multiphoton pathways experimentally.

Effects of spontaneously induced coherence on absorption of a ladder-type atom

Hongmei Ma, Gong Shang-Qing, Zhenrong Sun +2 more

This paper investigates the effects of spontaneously induced coherence on absorption properties in a nearly equispaced three-level ladder-type system driven by two coherent fields. It find that the absorption properties of this system with the probe field applied on the lower transition can be significantly modified if this coherence is optimized. In the case of small spontaneous decay rate in the upper excited state, it finds that such coherence does not destroy the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Nevertheless, the absorption peak on both sides of zero detuning and the linewidth of absorption line become larger and narrower than those in the case corresponding to the effects of spontaneously induced coherence; while in the case of large decay rate, it finds that, instead of EIT with low resonant absorption, a sharp absorption peak at resonance appears. That is, electromagnetically induced absorption in the nearly equispaced ladder-type system can occur due to such coherent effects.

Interference Phenomena in Spontaneous Emission from Driven Multilevel Atoms

V. O. Chaltykyan, A. D. Gazazyan, Y. Pashayan-Leroy

We study spontaneous emission from an atom under the action of laser fields. We consider two different energy level diagrams. The first one consists of two levels resonantly driven by laser radiation where either of levels may decay to a separate level. For such a system we show that the presence of the second decay channel may deteriorate the destructive interference occurring in case of one decay channel because of Autler-Townes effect. The second diagram represents two two-level resonantly driven systems with the upper levels decaying to a common level. For this diagram we show that there is no interference between the two decay channels when the laser fields are described in the Fock representation, while in case of definite-phase classical fields such interference takes place and is partially or completely destructive or constructive depending on the initial conditions and on the mutual orientation of the spontaneous emission dipole moments.

Intensity–intensity correlations in a V-type atom driven by a coherent field in a broadband squeezed vacuum

F. Carreño, M. A. Antón, Óscar G. Calderón

We study the intensity–intensity correlation in a closely spaced doublet V-type three-level atom driven by an external coherent field and damped by a broadband squeezed vacuum. We are interested in the manner in which the atom emits photons under the combined effect of quantum interference and squeezed vacuum. For distinguishable photons and degenerate transitions, the squeezed field produces anticorrelation, whereas for nondegenerate transitions the effect of the squeezed field is the surpassing of the antibunching during certain time intervals. We find that bunching/antibunching behaviour and the symmetry of the two emission processes can be controlled by the relative phase of the squeezed vacuum to the coherent field. For particular conditions we show a bunching behaviour which turns to antibunching when the two-photon correlations in the squeezed vacuum are reduced to the classical level. Therefore, this transition must be attributed to the quantum nature of the squeezed vacuum. We also study the sideband correlations. We find that squeezed vacuum makes the sidebands evolve at different rates which are phase dependent.

Quantitative criterion for quantum interference within spontaneous emission modification of a driven ladder atom

Jiaren Liu, Zhiyi Zhang, Xiao George +1 more

The spontaneous emission spectrum of a ladder three-level atom with an upper transition driven by a coherent field is calculated under a universal model where various decays, any incoherent pumping and coherent driving are taken into account. The analytical expression for the spectrum profile is given on the basis of the quantum regression theorem. To our knowledge, it is the first time that the quantitative criterion condition Ω<|γ ab −γ ac |, under which quantum destructive interference induced by the coherent driving field occurs, is deduced for the modification of spontaneous emission from the middle level to the ground level. The roles and limits of incoherent pumping, coherent driving and experimental configuration are discussed for realizing the quantum interference and reducing the Doppler effects.
