IONIZATION DETECTION OF LASER DRIVEN TRANSITIONS TO HIGH RYDBERG STATES OF $He_{2}$

Abstract

We have observed transitions from the metastable state to high rydberg states (=10-25) of $He_{2}$. These transitions are detected by collisional ionization the efficiency of which is roughly $constant^{(1)}$ with increasing principle quantum number. This technique is thus well suited for the study of highly excited states states which connot be examined with classical optical $methods^{(2)}$.

Rydberg atom spectroscopy enabled by blackbody radiation ionization

We have excited helium atoms from their metastable 2 ${}^{3}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}S$ state to Rydberg states in the range $13<n<50$ in a two-step process via the 3 ${}^{3}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}P$ state using light at $\ensuremath{\lambda}=389$ nm and 785--815 nm. Atoms in a thermal beam (100 K) cross partially overlapping laser beams of the appropriate frequencies in the counterintuitive order to exploit the high efficiency of stimulated rapid adiabatic passage. The interaction region is between two plates that can be used for Stark tuning in a few V/cm field or for field ionization. At fields much too low for field ionization, we observe signals attributed to ionization by blackbody radiation. Multiple tests confirm this attribution as the cause of ionization. For example, by heating the plates we observe the expected signal increases. Our experiments reinforce previous work where the interaction between Rydberg atoms and room temperature blackbody radiation is important for experiments.

Highly excited atomic states

Борис М. Смирнов

The properties of highly excited atoms are examined. Methods for producing and detecting such atoms are analyzed. Various processes that involve atoms in Rydberg states are described, including transitions between high-lying excited states induced by collisions with electrons and atoms, quenching by electrons and atoms, ionization by collisions with electrons, atoms, and molecules, charge exchange with ions, and so on.

Multiphoton excitation and subsequent ionization detection of metastable atoms: measurement of n^3S–n^3D splittings in He

R. L. Panock, Richard R. Freeman, J. C. White +1 more

A simple technique is described for the efficient detection of multiphoton transitions from metastable states of atomic or molecular species to their excited states of either even or odd parity. This technique is demonstrated in metastable He, and first measurements of n3S-n3D splittings for n = 18-22 are reported.

Excitation and ionization of hydrogen Rydberg states in a plasma

Wallace L. Glab, Munir Hasan Nayfeh

Hydrogen Rydberg states in a hydrogen plasma are optically excited from the plasma-excited n = 2 state. Photoionization and optogalvanic ionization, which is due to electron-impact ionization and other collisional processes, are used to monitor the Rydberg states. This process may be used to study collisional ionization of the Rydberg states.

IONIZATION DETECTION OF RYDBERG LINESHAPES IN STRONTIUM VAPOUR PERTURBED BY FOREIGN GASES

Douglas M. Bruce, W. W. Duley

Using laser two-photon excitation and ionization detection, we report lineshape parameters for collisionally perturbed Rydberg levels of Sr. With He, Ar, Kr and Xe as perturber gases at pressures up to one atmosphere, the broadening and shift rates of 5sns 1S0 and 5snd 1D2 (7 ≤ n ≤ 52) are given and compared with theoretical predictions. The observation of satellite structures on low lying Rydberg levels are also presented.
