IONIZATION DETECTION OF RYDBERG LINESHAPES IN STRONTIUM VAPOUR PERTURBED BY FOREIGN GASES

Abstract

Using laser two-photon excitation and ionization detection, we report lineshape parameters for collisionally perturbed Rydberg levels of Sr. With He, Ar, Kr and Xe as perturber gases at pressures up to one atmosphere, the broadening and shift rates of 5sns 1S0 and 5snd 1D2 (7 ≤ n ≤ 52) are given and compared with theoretical predictions. The observation of satellite structures on low lying Rydberg levels are also presented.

Collisions between Sr Rydberg atoms of intermediate and high principal quantum numbers and noble gases at thermal energies

K -D Heber, P. J. West, Eckart Matthias

Pressure shift and broadening measurements of 5snd 1 D 2 and 5snd 3 D 2 Rydberg states of Sr I due to Xe have been performed in the range 8<or=n<or=35 by means of Doppler-free two-photon excitation, combined with thermionic detection and the use of a molecular frequency standard. The data show striking differences between pressure shifts and broadenings of singlet and triplet states, which up to now have not been predicted by theory.

Asymmetry in the pressure-broadened strontium resonance line induced by rare gas perturbers

Y. C. Chan, Jerry A. Gelbwachs

The spectral lineshapes of the Sr (51P1–51P0) resonance transition perturbed by rare gases have been examined with a high-resolution laser-induced fluorescence method. In He and Ne, the collisional broadened spectral profiles are found to be symmetrical over the entire studied pressure range (0–600 Torr). The resulting line shapes are accurately represented by a simple Voigt profile expression. The Ar, Kr, and Xe perturbing gases, however, produce anomalous asymmetrical line broadening. To our knowledge, this represents the first measurement of asymmetrical broadening in the near wings of the emission profiles of the Sr-rare gas systems. Quantitative comparisons of the measured and theoretical line asymmetries suggest that atomic interactions in the Sr-rare gas systems are not entirely due to van der Waals (R-6)-type interactions. The line asymmetries could be caused by the correlations between thermal motions of the Sr atoms and collisional interactions.

Collisional broadening of Rydberg atom transitions by rare gas perturbers

Megan E Henry, Roger M. Herman

In this paper we present the results and discuss the applicability of an impact theory of lineshapes, developed by Henry and Herman for the pressure-induced broadening and shifting of transitions from the ground state to various Rydberg states of alkalis, to the situation in which the perturbing atoms are ground-state rare gas atoms. This theory, which has successfully described the collisional broadening of Rydberg states by alkali atoms, can without major alterations predict the widths and shifts of Doppler-free two-photon transitions to n S and n D states of Rb and Na, 6⩽ n ⩽30, perturbed by He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe. The results in all cases show reasonable agreement with experiment, with the transitions to Na**( n D) states being somewhat less satisfactory than the others.

Shifts and broadenings of barium Rydberg states perturbed by inert gases

M. Marafi, Z Suji, K. S. Bhatia +2 more

Collisional broadening and shift data for even parity states of neutral barium are presented. A two-photon absorption technique is used to populate Rydberg states of n d 1 D 2 , 3 D 2 and 1 S 0 series. High-resolution Ba excitation spectra were measured using a diode detector while scanning the frequency of an excimer pumped dye laser. Inert gases Ar, Kr and Xe were used as perturbers at pressures ranging from 10 mb to 400 mb. Shifts and broadenings of spectral lines were measured as a function of pressure and principal quantum number n . Several perturbations and deviations from expected results are discussed in this paper.

Collisional shifts and broadenings of doubly excited states of barium

M. Marafi, Z Suji, K. S. Bhatia +1 more

Shift and broadening parameters for doubly excited states of 5d6d, 5d7d, 5d7s, 5d8s and 6p 2 configurations in neutral barium atoms are presented. A tunable dye laser pumped by an excimer laser was used to populate the Rydberg states of Ba by two-photon absorption from the 6s 2 1 S 0 ground state. Inert gases Ar, Kr and Xe at 100 mbar pressure were used as perturbing gases. The resulting line shapes were fitted to a Voigt line shape function, from which shift and broadening parameters were inferred.

State mixing in Rydberg atom — noble gas collisions

K.-D. Heber, P. J. West, Eckart Matthias

Pressure shift and broadening rates, caused by thermal collisions with xenon atoms, have been measured for 5snd 1D2 and 5snd 3D2 Rydberg states of SrI in the range 8≤n≤25 by means of Doppler‐free two‐photon excitation and thermionic detection. The results show drastically different resonant collisional admixtures for 1D2 and 3D2 states between 13≤n≤19. Above n=20 non‐resonant systematic deviations of shifts and broadenings between singlet and triplet 5snd states are observed.
