Abstract

Theoretical possibility of huge efficiency increase in nonlinear four-wave transformation on the Raman-type scheme by means of maximum polarization targeting on the dipole forbidden transition of the A system in the use of the effect of coherent population capture is considered in the article. It is shown that in these conditions efficiency can be increased, at least, by seven orders.

The possibility of creating high polarization on dipole forbidden atomic transition by means of coherent population trapping (CPT) is researched. It is shown that the CPT allows to create the high-limit value of polarization, while the optical transparency of the medium at the lengths of hundreds of times greater than the length of the linear optical absorption.

Raman frequency mixing under coherent population trapping conditions

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, Д. В. Манушкин, S. A. Myslivets +1 more

An investigation is reported of resonant four-wave frequency mixing of the type ω 4 =ω 1 —ω 2 +ω 3 under coherent population trapping conditions. Such mixing may appear when radiations of frequencies ω 1,2 are strong and when ω 1 —ω 2 =ω 20 (ω 20 is the frequency of a dipole-forbidden transition). The density matrix method is used to calculate (taking quantum interference into account) the absorption coefficients, the refractive indices, and the nonlinear susceptibilities exactly for the strong fields and in the first order of perturbation theory for the weak fields. A study is made of the dependence of the power of nonlinear optical generation on various characteristics of the transitions and of the radiation, subject to the propagation effects. The cases of homogeneous and Doppler broadening of the resonant transitions are considered. The characteristics of transitions in the barium atom are used in numerical illustrations. It is shown that the efficiency of resonant nonlinear-optical conversion of radiation can be enhanced by utilising interference processes in quantum transitions, which represent coherent population trapping.

Resonant Raman-type mixing using coherent population trapping

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, Sergei A. Myslivets, Д. В. Манушкин +1 more

We study resonant four-wave mixing process (omega) 4 equals (omega) 1 minus (omega) 2 plus (omega) 3 under conditions of coherent population trapping (CPT) when radiations with frequencies (omega) 1,2 are strong, and (omega) 1 minus (omega) 2 equals (omega) 20 ((omega) 20 is a frequency of electrodipole-forbidden transition). It is shown that under the CPT sufficiently large nonlinear polarization (the same as linear polarization or higher) may be created. We show that in atomic Ba vapor for cw lasers quantum conversion efficiency can be as high as several tens percent.

Высокоэффективная схема перераспределения оптического излучения на пространственных решетках атомных населенностей

AbstractThe radiation intensity redistribution of the probe field upon its scattering by spatially periodic atomic population gratings in a medium with a four-level tripod configuration of atomic states is investigated theoretically. Conditions are found under which a significant redistribution of the probe-wave field intensity occurs, and a “diffraction” pattern is formed with an efficient probe-field intensity transfer to the first-order maxima.

Directional Anisotropy of the Backward Four-Wave Mixing in GaSes

S. Saikan

Directional anisotropy of the nonlinear polarization responsible for the back-ward four-wave mixing in gases has been theoretically investigated for Doppler broadened two-level and Raman type three-level systems. It has been found that definite separation of coherent and incoherent terms of the nonlinear polarization is possible via backward four-wave mixing and also that a single Lorentzian line shape is expected to be observed which enables us to unambiguously determine the relaxation rate of a dipole forbidden transition.
