Non-Classical Correlated Photon Pairs Generation via Cascade Transition of 5S1/2–5P3/2–5D5/2in a Hot85Rb Atomic Vapor

Wei Zhang, Dong-Sheng Ding, Jian-Song Pan +1 more

We experimentally prepare the non-classical correlated photon pairs at the wavelengths of 780 and 776 nm via the cascade transition of 5S 1/2 –5P 3/2 –5D 5/2 in a hot 85 Rb atomic ensemble. By measuring the function of cross-correlation and auto-correlation of photons, a violation of Cauchy—Schwarz inequality by a factor of 283 is obtained, which clearly indicates a strong non-classical correlation between the generated photons. We also find that noise photons scattered from pump lasers have a strong effect on the Cauchy—Schwarz inequality factor by changing the intensity of the pump laser, the experimental results are consistent with the theoretical predictions.

Comparison between transparencies of 5S_1/2-5P_3/2-4D_5/2 and 5S_1/2-5P_3/2-5D_5/2 transitions of ^87Rb atoms

Han Seb Moon, Heung‐Ryoul Noh

We have experimentally and theoretically studied the causes of the transparency spectra of the 5S1/2-5P3/2-4D5/2 and 5S1/2-5P3/2-5D5/2 transitions of 87Rb atoms. Although, the two-photon resonance of the 5S1/2-5P3/2-4D5/2 transition was not Doppler-free in an Rb vapor, we observed the transparency phenomenon in this transition. The main cause of the transparency of the 5S1/2-5P3/2-4D5/2 transition was double-resonance optical pumping (DROP) due to two-step excitation, and that of the 5S1/2-5P3/2-5D5/2 transition was DROP and electromagnetically induced transparency due to two-photon coherence. We confirmed the experimental results with theoretical results calculated using the density matrix equations considering all the degenerate magnetic sublevels of both transitions of the 87Rb atoms.

Collimated Blue and Infrared Beams Generated by Two-Photon Excitation in Rb Vapor

J. F. Sell, M. A. Gearba, DePaola, B. D. +1 more

Utilizing two-photon excitation in hot Rb vapor we demonstrate the generation of collimated optical fields at 420 and 1324 nm. Input laser beams at 780 and 776 nm enter a heated Rb vapor cell collinear and circularly polarized, driving Rb atoms to the 5D5/2 state. Under phase-matching conditions coherence among the 5S1/2 → 5P3/2 → 5D5/2 → 6P3/2 transitions produces a blue (420 nm) beam by four-wave mixing. We also observe a forward and backward propagating IR (1324 nm) beam, due to cascading decays through the 6S1/2 → 5P1/2 states. Power saturation of the generated beams is investigated by scaling the input powers to greater than 200 mW, resulting in a coherent blue beam of 9.1 mWpower, almost an order of magnitude larger than previously achieved. We measure the dependences of both beams in relation to the Rb density, the frequency detuning between Rb ground-state hyperfine levels, and the input laser intensities.
