Abstract

We demonstrate a technique of measuring Glauberpsilas normalized correlation functions for nonclassical light generated in the pulsed regime. In particular, intensity correlation functions are studied for the transition between spontaneous and stimulated parametric down-conversion.

Multi-photon states and their measurement

T. Sh. Iskhakov, Olga A. Ivanova, Maria V. Chekhova

Generation of multi-photon states (such as for instance three- and four-photon states) is one of the most challenging problems of modern quantum optics. In many works the authors claim to have produced such states by means of overlapping photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). Moreover three- and four-photon states generated this way have been used for observing Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) polarization states testing Bell's inequalities for spin-1 quantum systems preparing W-states and other applications. In this paper we show that the criterion for obtaining three- or four-photon states is the behavior of the corresponding normalized Glauber's correlation function. Calculations carried out for the case of SPDC or even PDC in the stimulated regime demonstrate that these processes are not capable of generating three- or four-photon states: photon statistics reveals typically two-photon behaviour. We suggest a method of measuring higher-order correlation functions in the pulsed regime which allows one to study multi-photon correlations for these and many other processes.

Multiphoton correlations in parametric down-conversion and their measurement in the pulsed regime

Olga Aleksandrovna Ivanova, T. Sh. Iskhakov, Alexander N. Penin +1 more

We consider normalised intensity correlation functions (CFs) of different orders for light emitted via parametric down-conversion (PDC) and their dependence on the number of photons per mode. The main problem in measuring such correlation functions is their extremely small width, which considerably reduces their contrast. It is shown that if the radiation under study is modulated by a periodic sequence of pulses that are short compared to the CF width, no decrease in the contrast occurs. A procedure is proposed for measuring normalised CFs of various orders in the pulsed regime. For nanosecond-pulsed PDC radiation, normalised second-order CF is measured experimentally as a function of the mean photon number.

Study of the Glauber correlation functions in a pulsed mode

I. N. Agafonov, T. Sh. Iskhakov, Maria V. Chekhova

A method for measuring the Glauber correlation functions in a pulsed mode is proposed. The effect of the detector dead time on the shape of a measured correlation function is analyzed. The second-order intensity correlation functions for coherent and quasi-thermal radiation, as well as for biphoton light emitted during spontaneous parametric down-conversion, are measured in a nanosecond pulsed mode.

Accessing Higher Order Correlations in Quantum Optical States by Time Multiplexing

Malte Avenhaus, Kaisa Laiho, Maria V. Chekhova +1 more

We experimentally measured higher order normalized correlation functions (NCF) of pulsed light with a time-multiplexing detector. We demonstrate excellent performance of our device by verifying unity valued NCF up to the eighth order for coherent light and factorial dependence of the NCF for pseudothermal light. We applied our measurement technique to a type-II parametric down-conversion source to investigate mutual two-mode correlation properties and ascertain nonclassicality.

Photon antibunching in pulsed squeezed light generated via parametric amplification

Masato Koashi, K. Kono, Takuya Hirano +1 more

We have measured the intensity correlation of pulsed squeezed light generated by a degenerate optical parametric amplifier seeding weak coherent input signal. When the signal was deamplified, the correlation showed antibunching and the probability distribution of the photon number was sub-Poissonian, both of these being nonclassical properties of light.
