Characterization of the multimode nature of single-photon sources based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Emil R. Hellebek, Klaus Mølmer, Anders Søndberg Sørensen

Single-photon sources are necessary components for many prospective quantum technologies. One candidate for a single-photon source is spontaneous parametric down-conversion combined with a heralding photon detection. The heralded light pulse from such a source is typically treated as single mode; this treatment, however, is incomplete. We develop a full multimode description based on the exact Bogoliubov treatment of the down-conversion process. We then provide a perturbative and effective treatment, which illustrates the most important physical mechanisms and permits analytical estimates of the success probability and purity of single-photon states under practical heralding conditions, both without relying on the precise detection time of the heralding photon and when accepting photons only in a narrow window around the time of the detection. This permits us to characterize the emitted light under three different assumptions for the pump pulse. For spontaneous parametric down-conversion with a very short pump pulse, we find the single-mode description to be accurate, while for longer pump pulses and continuous pumping, a multimode description is necessary. Our findings can be used to guide the design of quantum information protocols based on heralded single-photon sources, as their performance may depend on the multimode nature of the sources.

Observation of Four-Photon Interference with a Beam Splitter by Pulsed Parametric Down-Conversion

Z. Y. Ou, June‐Koo Kevin Rhee, L. J. Wang

When four photons arrive at a beam splitter, two from each side, a four-photon, six-path interference effect occurs to yield a sixfold enhancement of the probability for all four photons to exit together from the beam splitter. We produce the four-photon state by using the stimulated emission process in a pulsed parametric down-conversion and measure the probability for all four photons to exit from one side of the beam splitter. The observed enhancement factor is in good agreement with a multimode treatment of pulsed down-conversion.

Coherent bidirectional microwave-optical conversion using Rydberg atoms

Deterministic quantum information processing will require hybrid quantum systems like an interface between microwave and optical photons. We propose a scheme for efficient, multimode and coherent microwave-optical conversion based on frequency mixing in Rydberg atoms.

Coherent temporal filtering of multimode parametric down-conversion using a quantum pulse gate

Abhinandan Bhattacharjee, Patrick Folge, Laura Serino +3 more

Spectrally pure and indistinguishable single photons are essential for quantum network platforms, where high-visibility interference underpins many quantum information protocols. However, most practical single-photon sources emit spectrally multimode states with reduced purity. Conventional spectral intensity filtering can partially improve purity but cannot select a well-defined temporal mode (TM). Here, we demonstrate coherent temporal filtering of a multimode parametric down-conversion (PDC) source using a quantum pulse gate (QPG) and benchmark its performance against conventional intensity filtering. The generated PDC photons exhibit strong spectral correlations, rendering extraction of pure heralded photons from the pair a challenge. We demonstrate that QPG filtering consistently generates heralded photons with purities above 0.90 regardless of the filter shape. Contrariwise, using spectral intensity filters yields mixed photons. Photon purities are probed with chronocyclic Q-function tomography. Furthermore, we demonstrate the versatility of QPG filtering by extracting structured TMs, including superposition of picosecond time bins. These results establish the QPG as a practical coherent filtering tool for quantum network applications.
