Nonlinear couplings and cooling dynamics in a large Paul trap designed for quantum information

Romain Dubessy, S. Removille, B. Dubost +3 more

Nonlinear coupling between the radial and axial motion of a hot ion cloud appear in a loss spectrum obtained by measuring the fraction of ions still trapped after a phase of excitation ("tickle") applied to a couple of electrodes, this technique allows us to identify the frequencies associated to the radial and axial motion of the ions. It was observed that interactions between ions induce coupling effects in large hot ions clouds trapped in a linear Paul trap. The features of such a coupling are captured by n-body numerical simulations.

The stability of an ion-trap laser

Guzman, R, Miguel Orszag

In this work we study the trapped ion in a Paul Trap, and placed in a cavity. Interactions between cavity and ion, permits transfer squeezing from phonons to photons, through an electronic pump (which is coherent), and a particular phonon pump. We also discus stability of the stationary states of the system.

Observation of phonon hopping in radial vibrational modes of trapped ions

Shinsuke Haze, Yusuke Tateishi, Atsushi Noguchi +2 more

We observed phonon hopping by using the radial vibrational motion of trapped ions and we investigated the properties of radial mode phonons, which can be used for quantum simulation of the Hubbard model. This study represents an essential step toward realizing a physical implementation of the Bose-Hubbard model with trapped ions.

Study of decoherence in radial local phonon hopping within trapped-ion string

Yuxuan Chen, Yuri, Takumi, Kenji Toyoda

We systematically investigate local phonon hopping in the radial direction of a linear trapped-ion string. We measure the decay of hopping as a function of key trap parameters and analyze the results in terms of the decay time and the number of oscillations. We attribute the loss of coherence to nonlinear coupling between different modes. Despite quantitative differences, the overall trends in our numerical simulations are similar to those of the experimental results. This work establishes a method for evaluating phonon hopping coherence and provides insight into the underlying decoherence mechanisms.

Pulsed phonon lasing in trapped ions

Yi Xie, Wei Wan, Hao Wu +3 more

Optical laser pulses play important roles in various fields, and the phononlike analog, i.e., phonon laser pulses, should also be very useful. We show the possibility of pulsed phonon lasing in trapped ions based on our observation that coherent phonon pulses are generated and then transferred between transverse dimensions due to nonlinear resonance once the oscillation amplitude of the trapped ions is larger than a threshold. We study the pulsed phonon output with the multiple-scale method using the first-order nonlinear differential equations which govern time evolution of the amplitudes and phases of the interacting modes. We also discuss the feasibility of $Q$-switched pulsed phonon lasing and the potential application.

Engineering two-mode interactions in ion traps

Jörg Steinbach, Jason Twamley, P. L. Knight

We describe how two vibrational degrees of freedom of a single trapped ion can be coupled through the action of suitably chosen laser excitation. We concentrate on a two-dimensional ion trap with dissimilar vibrational frequencies in the $x$ and $y$ directions of motion and derive from first principles a variety of quantized two-mode couplings, concentrating on a linear coupling that takes excitations from one mode to another. We demonstrate how this can result in a state rotation, in which it is possible to transfer the motional state of the ion from, say, the $x$ direction to the $y$ direction without prior knowledge of that motional state.
