Abstract

We observed phonon hopping by using the radial vibrational motion of trapped ions and we investigated the properties of radial mode phonons, which can be used for quantum simulation of the Hubbard model. This study represents an essential step toward realizing a physical implementation of the Bose-Hubbard model with trapped ions.

Study of decoherence in radial local phonon hopping within trapped-ion string

Yuxuan Chen, Yuri, Takumi, Kenji Toyoda

We systematically investigate local phonon hopping in the radial direction of a linear trapped-ion string. We measure the decay of hopping as a function of key trap parameters and analyze the results in terms of the decay time and the number of oscillations. We attribute the loss of coherence to nonlinear coupling between different modes. Despite quantitative differences, the overall trends in our numerical simulations are similar to those of the experimental results. This work establishes a method for evaluating phonon hopping coherence and provides insight into the underlying decoherence mechanisms.

Quantum Walks of a Phonon in Trapped Ions

Masaya Tamura, Takashi Mukaiyama, Kenji Toyoda

We report the observation of the quantum walks of a phonon, a vibrational quantum, in a trapped-ion crystal. By employing the capability to prepare and observe the localized wave packet of a phonon, the propagation of a single radial local phonon in a four-ion linear crystal is observed with single-site resolution. The results show an agreement with numerical calculations, indicating the predictability and reproducibility of the phonon system. These characteristics may contribute advantageously in the advanced studies of quantum walks, as well as boson sampling and quantum simulation.

Experimental Realization of the Rabi-Hubbard Model with Trapped Ions

Q.-X. Mei, B.-W. Li, Y.-K. Wu +5 more

Quantum simulation provides important tools in studying strongly correlated many-body systems with controllable parameters. As a hybrid of two fundamental models in quantum optics and in condensed matter physics, the Rabi-Hubbard model demonstrates rich physics through the competition between local spin-boson interactions and long-range boson hopping. Here, we report an experimental realization of the Rabi-Hubbard model using up to 16 trapped ions and present a controlled study of its equilibrium properties and quantum dynamics. We observe the ground-state quantum phase transition by slowly quenching the coupling strength, and measure the quantum dynamical evolution in various parameter regimes. With the magnetization and the spin-spin correlation as probes, we verify the prediction of the model Hamiltonian by comparing theoretical results in small system sizes with experimental observations. For larger-size systems of 16 ions and 16 phonon modes, the effective Hilbert space dimension exceeds 2^{57}, whose dynamics is intractable for classical supercomputers.

Nonequilibrium phonon dynamics in trapped-ion systems

Tarun Dutta, Manas Mukherjee, K. Sengupta

We propose a concrete experiment to probe the nonequilibrium local dynamics of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model using a trapped ion system consisting of a linear chain of few ions prepared in a state of transverse motional mode which corresponds to a fixed number of phonons per ion. These phonons are well known to be described by an effective Bose-Hubbard model. We propose a protocol which leads to a sudden local sign reversal of the on-site interaction strength of this Hubbard model at one of the sites and demonstrate that the subsequent nonequilibrium dynamics of the model can be experimentally probed by measuring the time-dependent phonon number in a specific motional state of the ions. We back our experimental proposal with exact numerical calculation of the dynamics of a Bose-Hubbard model subsequent to a local quench.

Quantum phases of interacting phonons in ion traps

Xiaolong Deng, Diego Porras, J. I. Cirac

The vibrations of a chain of trapped ions can be considered, under suitable experimental conditions, as an ensemble of interacting phonons, whose quantum dynamics is governed by a Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. In this work we study the quantum phases which appear in this system, and show that thermodynamical properties, such as critical parameters and critical exponents, can be measured in experiments with a limited number of ions. In addition to that, interacting phonons in trapped ions offer us the possibility to access regimes which are difficult to study with ultracold bosons in optical lattices, such as models with attractive or site-dependent phonon-phonon interactions.

Observation of Hopping and Blockade of Bosons in a Trapped Ion Spin Chain

Shantanu Debnath, Norbert M. Linke, Sheng-Tao Wang +4 more

The local phonon modes in a Coulomb crystal of trapped ions can represent a Hubbard system of coupled bosons. We selectively prepare single excitations at each site and observe free hopping of a boson between sites, mediated by the long-range Coulomb interaction between ions. We then implement phonon blockades on targeted sites by driving a Jaynes-Cummings interaction on individually addressed ions to couple their internal spin to the local phonon mode. The resulting dressed states have energy splittings that can be tuned to suppress phonon hopping into the site. This new experimental approach opens up the possibility of realizing large-scale Hubbard systems from the bottom up with tunable interactions at the single-site level.
