Abstract

The replicate-and-mask (R&M) construction of finite-length spatially-coupled (SC) LDPC codes is proposed in this paper. The proposed R&M construction generalizes the conventional matrix unwrapping construction and contains it as a special case. The R&M construction of a class of algebraic spatially coupled (SC) quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes over arbitrary finite fields is demonstrated. The girth, rank, and time-varying periodicity of the proposed R&M SC QC LDPC codes are analyzed. The error rate performance of finite-length nonbinary algebraic SC QC LDPC codes is investigated with window decoding. Compared to the conventional unwrapping construction, it is found through numerical simulations that the R&M construction resulted in SC QC LDPC codes with better block error rate performance and lower error floors. With a flooding schedule decoder, it is shown that the proposed R&M algebraic SC QC LDPC codes have better error performance than the corresponding LDPC block codes and random SC codes. The R&M construction of irregular SC QC LDPC codes is demonstrated. It is shown that low-complexity regular puncturing schemes can be deployed on these codes to construct families of rate-compatible irregular SC QC LDPC codes with good performance.

Non-binary algebraic spatially-coupled quasi-cyclic LDPC codes

This paper considers the algebraic construction and performance of non-binary spatially-coupled low density parity check (LDPC) codes. A replicate-and-mask approach is presented to construct finite-length algebraic quasi-cyclic (QC) spatially-coupled (SC) LDPC codes. Numerical results show the superiority of non-binary algebraic SC QC LDPC codes over the corresponding random non-binary (block and SC) LDPC codes. In this paper, it is demonstrated that the threshold saturation phenomenon, previously demonstrated for binary SC LDPC codes, also holds for non-binary SC LDPC codes over the binary-input AWGN channel with BPSK modulation.

Construction of Regular and Irregular QC-LDPC Codes: a Finite Field Approach and Masking

Xiaopeng Chen, Lin Zhou, Rui Zhao +1 more

Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) codes require less hardware resources due to the quasi-cyclic structure of parity-check matrices. In this paper, two improved methods for constructing QC-LDPC codes are proposed.Firstly, in order to make sure the masked LDPC codes have flexible code rate and code length, an improved construction of masking matrix is presented. The proposed regular masking matrix of QC-LDPC codes have the girth at least 6.Then, the irregular codes are constructed by using improved finite field approach and PEG algorithm, which result in large girth and less short cycles.Simulations demonstrate that the proposed QC-LDPC codes have both lower error floor and good waterfall performance.

A New Nonbinary Quasi-cyclic LDPC Codes Construction Algorithm

Tong Ningning -, WU Yu-ping

An algorithm for constructing nonbinary Quasi-cyclic LDPC (QC-LDPC) codes on the basis of masking and puncturing techniques in consideration of the shortage of algebraic construction algorithm and time-varying performance of wireless channels is proposed . This scheme can reduce the complexity of the hardware implementation, enhance the error correction performance of the LDPC codes constructed by structure algorithm based on masking technology, and improve the average effectiveness of the communication system by realizing a rate-compatible encoding based on puncturing technology. The simulation results show that the nonbinary LDPC codes constructed with masking and puncturing techniques can provide significantly stronger error correction capabilities as compared with those constructed with algebraic method which are used directly.

Random-permutation-matrix-based cyclically-coupled LDPC codes

Francis C. M. Lau, Fanlu Mo, Wai M. Tarn +1 more

Cyclically-coupled quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (CC-QC-LDPC) codes are a new class of QC-LDPC codes which can achieve excellent error performance and relatively low hardware requirement. In this paper, we modify the CC-QC-LDPC code construction by using random permutation matrices instead of circulant permutation matrices, forming the “random-permutation-matrix-based CC-LDPC (RP-CC-LDPC) code”. The objective is to achieve a better error performance under the same code length. We simulate the bit error rate using FPGA simulations. We also compare the BER results and decoder complexity of the above codes with those of regular and irregular QC-LDPC codes under the same code length and code rate.

Algebraic Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes: Construction, Low Error-Floor, Large Girth and a Reduced-Complexity Decoding Scheme

Juane Li, Keke Liu, Shu Lin +1 more

This paper presents a simple and very flexible method for constructing quasi-cyclic (QC) low density paritycheck (LDPC) codes based on finite fields. The code construction is based on two arbitrary subsets of elements from a given field. Some well known constructions of QC-LDPC codes based on finite fields and combinatorial designs are special cases of the proposed construction. The proposed construction in conjunction with a technique, known as masking, results in codes whose Tanner graphs have girth 8 or larger. Experimental results show that codes constructed using the proposed construction perform well and have low error-floors. Also presented in the paper is a reduced-complexity iterative decoding scheme for QC-LDPC codes based on the section-wise cyclic structure of their parity-check matrices. The proposed decoding scheme is an improvement of an earlier proposed reduced-complexity iterative decoding scheme.

Error Floor Analysis of Quasi-Cyclic LDPC and Spatially Coupled-LDPC Codes and Construction of Codes with Low Error Floor

Forward error-correcting (FEC) codes play an important role in transmitting data with extremely high reliability through modern communication systems. Many applications such as optical communication channels require a very low error rate when transmitting data.In this thesis, we study the design and analysis of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in general and spatially coupled (SC) LDPC codes in particular. At first, we analyze the error floor performance of finite-length protographbased spatially coupled LDPC codes in terms of their design parameters. We conduct a comprehensive analysis to show that the parameter syndrome former memory (m) plays the main role in the average number of cycles and trapping sets in the Tanner graph of finite-length SC-LDPC codes. This, in fact, gives an insight into the error floor performance of protograph-based SC-LDPC codes, and demonstrates the superiority of these codes in the error floor region, compared to their block code counterparts. To complement the theoretical analysis conducted in the first stage of this research, we develop efficient design techniques for the construction of high-performance quasi-cyclic (QC)-LDPC and SC-LDPC codes, as the second part of the research. Our design approach is basically aimed at improving the performance of finite-length (SC) LDPC codes while maintaining the decoder complexity and latency small. The improvement in error floor is achieved by minimizing (elimination of) the most harmful trapping set (TS)s.In this regard, we present two design approaches: i) imposing simple conditions on the small cycles to result in the elimination of specific classes of trapping sets, ii) developing a search-based design technique such that specific trapping sets are targeted for minimization/elimination through the algorithm. Our constructed QC-LDPC and time-invariant SC-LDPC codes are superior to the stateof-the-art both in terms of their error floor performance and their low decoding latency and complexity. Finally, we look into the design of finite-length time-invariant QC SC-LDPC codes iii I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor, Prof. Amir H.
