Propagation of the phase pulses of bichromatic radiation under the electromagnetically induced transparency conditions

We study the dynamics of the phase pulses of laser radiation with two resonant frequency components propagating in an atomic three-level Λ type medium under coherent population trapping. Using the density matrix adiabatic approach we show that the effect of a very large slowing down occurs not only for amplitude pulses, but also for phase pulses. The group velocity of phase pulses can be controlled by the amplitudes of resonant fields. The analytical solution describing the mutual influence of the phase modulation of one field component on another is obtained.

Pulse propagation in a medium of Λ -type atoms

P. R. Berman, C. H. Raymond Ooi

The propagation of a weak-field pulse through a medium of three-level atoms is considered. Each atom has a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type level scheme in which the two lower levels are stable. A strong control field drives one of the electronic transitions while the signal field drives the coupled transition under conditions where EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) is usually operative. The input pulse is slowed and compressed as it enters the medium, adiabatically following the EIT solution. However, if the control field is changed suddenly when the pulse is in the medium, the signal field is transformed into two pulses, one of which propagates as a normal EIT pulse and the other with a different speed and an amplitude that oscillates in time. The temporal oscillations are transformed into both spatial and temporal oscillations as the pulse exits the medium. An analytic expression is derived for the pulse intensity which provides a good approximation to the exact result at all times. It is shown that the oscillating component of the exiting pulse can be spatially compressed in comparison with the input pulse.

Propagation of a laser pulse in a three-level cascade atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Nguyen Huy Bang, Minh Dong Hoang, Van Doai Le +2 more

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such medium, i.e., the EIT effect is established. Under EIT conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state. Effect of a transient light shift on the propagation of an ultrashort pulse in a resonant atomic medium

Jean-Christophe Delagnes, M. A. Bouchène

An ultrashort weak pulse that propagates resonantly on the $\ensuremath{\mid}a⟩\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mid}b⟩$ transition of a three-level system $(\ensuremath{\mid}a⟩,\ensuremath{\mid}b⟩,\ensuremath{\mid}c⟩)$ experiences reshaping effects on a time scale longer than its duration. When a strong field is applied (nonresonantly) on the $\ensuremath{\mid}b⟩\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mid}c⟩$ transition, important light shifts are induced. We have theoretically studied the novel behavior of both the medium and weak propagating laser pulses in such conditions. For the transmitted field profile, drastic changes occur: at long times, efficient reduction of the distortion is obtained, while strong oscillations appear for short times, mapping out the dynamical light shift. These shaping effects, which are accompanied by new features in the spectrum for the propagating pulse, are interpreted as the result of the interference between incident field and induced dipole radiated field, whose frequency sweeps in time because of the induced light shift.

Optical pulse probing of coherency gradient in Λ-medium

Igor V. Kazinets, I. E. Mazets, Boris G. Matisov

Quantum coherence and interference in atomic systems can lead to interesting optical phenomena such as nonabsorbing resonances, lasing without inversion, generating an ultrahigh index of refraction without absorption, propagation of light pulses without losses. In the last-named is given the title transparency. Up to now it is known some types of transparency in multi-level resonant media. One of them is electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The phenomenon of EIT in the propagation of laser radiation through an absorbing medium has been recently investigated and explained in terms of quantum coherence and interference for multi-level atomic system. For instance in the (Lambda) -system, if the atomic medium is prepared in a quantum superposition of states, matched pulses, i.e., a pair of optical pulses whose amplitude and phase have a well defined relation, propagate without absorption. The mechanism of coherent population trapping is responsible for EIT in a (Lambda) -system. There is another, well known mechanism for creating transparency in a two-state atom: self-induced transparency, or SIT. Here, a single pulse whose area (the integral of its Rabi frequency over time) is 2(pi) is applied to the medium. Such a pulse causes the atoms to cycle smoothly from the ground to the excited state and then back again. In principle, such a pulse can propagate over long distances. SIT can be generalized to multi-level systems and multiple quasi-monochromatic fields. Generalization of SIT in a (Lambda) -system was obtained in reference 2. In this report we present a new type of transparency (combined transparency). This type describes propagation of laser pulse through a (Lambda) -type medium where the initial atomic state is prepared in the form of spatially varying coherent superposition of low-energetic states (initial coherency gradient). The common envelope behaves as usual 2(pi) hyperbolic secant pulse, but the ratio between the components of frequencies transitions 1> yields 3> and 2> yields 3> changes due to coherent Raman scattering so (phi) equals atan(E1/E2) equals (pi) /2-Gz, where z is the coordinate, G is the constant determined by both the incident pulse parameters and the initial coherence between the atomic states. Our solution demonstrates a direct connection of EIT in adiabatic regime to the SIT effects. This type of a transparency is given the title screw-type transparency, because for the given form of incident pulse (pitch of screw) medium is transparent, if medium's the initial coherence gradient is correspondingly prepared (thread on a engine nut). Besides a transparency, this phenomenon contains a transformation of the incident pulse frequency during the process of the propagation. This property of the phenomena can be result in a complete conversion of the frequency.

Resonant Λ medium as a converter of the laser radiation frequency

D. V. Kosachev

A theoretical investigation is made of the propagation of two-frequency laser radiation in an optically dense Λ medium in the presence of an rf field which is in resonance with a transition between the lower levels of a Λ-like system of an atom. It is shown that, depending on the phase and amplitude of the rf field and on the initial phases and intensities of the laser waves, one laser wave may be amplified at the expense of the energy of the other wave, or coherent bleaching of the medium (propagation of both waves without intensity losses) may take place.
