DEGENERATE FOUR-WAVE MIXING AND PHASE CONJUGATION IN ORGANIC DYE SOLUTIONS

Abstract

Phase conjugation of forward-wave produced by degenerate four-wave mixing by using nearly resonantly enhanced nonlinearity in orgnic dye solutions. was investigated. Good-quality reconstructed images have been obtained by direct wave-front phase conjugation. Reconstructed images with a resolution of 6 lines/mm were obtained. For rhodamin 6G in alcolol solution of 2.5×10-5 mole, nonlinear reflection coefficient up to 10% has been obtained.

The method of quartet degenerate four-wave mixing had been ex-tended to the doublet degenerate case. Using this method image conversion from 1.06 μm to 5320 ? had been realized with a conversion efficiency of 25% in a 5 mm long satu-rable absorber made of organic dye 9740 solution in dichloroethane. Theoretical analy-sis showed that using a medium, which is a near resonant absorber for the infrared object wave but is transparent for the visible reconstruction wave, the conversion efficiency may be well in excess of unity.

Phase Conjugation by Degenerate Four-wave Mixing in Inverted Dye Solutions

Phase conjugation has been observed in an amplifying medium of rhodamine 6G dye molecules in solution, excited either by flashlamps or by a laser. It is found that the mechanism involved in phase conjugation is degenerate four-wave mixing through gain saturation, and reasonable agreement obtained with the theory of saturable amplifiers. A phase-conjugate signal was observed over the tuning range of the dye system (580–605 nm) and a reflectivity up to a maximum of 25% was obtained.

GENERATION OF PHASE CONJUGATED BACKWARD WAVE BY DEGENERATE FOUR-WAVE MIXING IN CHLOROPHYLL SOLUTION

In this paper, the first experiment of generating the phase conjugated backward wave by degenerate four-wave mixing in chlorophyll solution is reported. It is demonstrated that the efficiency converting the incident object beam into the phase conjugated backward wave with interaction length 5mm long has approached 22%. This is a four-level system having a high conversion efficiency. The intensity of the complex conjugate reflected wave is proportional to that of the incident object wave as we kept the pumping beam intensity constant. The phase conjugate behaviours of the backward wave have been demonstrated. By using the phase conjugate nature of the reflected wave, good quality reconstructed images of a grid are obtained through a phase distorting media.
