Abstract

We have observed the reduction of group velocity of light via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and measured the dependence of pulse delay on the one-photon detuning in a three-level Λ-type atomic system. The results show that due to the effect of Doppler broadening the light speed reduction is signif icant in a range of ±600MHz one-photon detuning. Under the condition of consid ering the Doppler shift of frequency, the pulse delay as a function of the one-p hoton detuning is numerically calculated. The experimental measurements are in g ood agreement with the theoretical results. These researches provide theoretical and experimental references for controlling the group velocity of light by mean s of one-photon detuning.

Experimental study of the effects of two-photon detuning on slow light and light memory

Yan Yan, 李淑静 LI Shu-jing, Tian Long +1 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect is an effective means to store light field into the atom ensemble. The extra noise introduced in the stored procedure can be suppressed greatly under the condition of large one-photon detuning and proper two-photon detuning. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the slow light and light storage in 87Rb vapor by using EIT effect, and study the effects of the two-photon detuning on light pulse delay and light memory at 650 MHz one-photon red detuning. In order to avoid some unwanted effects under the high optical depth condition, such as four-wave mixing, etc., the temperature of the atomic cell is controlled at 65 degrees Celsius. The experimental results show that the delay and the retrieval signals are significant in a two-photon detuning range from 0 to 0.5 MHz. The pulse delay decreases with the increase of two-photon detuning. The delay is 0.36 ups at two-photon resonance, and it is 0.07 ups at 1 MHz two-photon detuning. We simulate the delayed light pulse by using a three-level -type EIT model. The shapes of the measured slow light are in agreement with the theoretical results. The retrieval signals are observed at different two-photon detunings. The shapes of the retrieval pulses change with the two-photon detuning. The shape variations of the retrieval pulses cannot be explained by the three-level EIT theoretical model. By considering the atomic Zeeman sublevels interacting with the left-circular and right-circular polarized components of probe and coupling fields, multiple -type EIT systems will be formed. The interference between the retrieval signals from multiple EIT subsystems causes the shape distortions of retrieval pulses. The retrieval efficiency is measured as a function of two-photon detuning. The retrieval efficiency oscillates, and multiple peaks appear with the increase of two-photon detuning. The first peak appears at two-photon resonance, and the second peak appears at 0.48 MHz two-photon detuning. Finally, we measure the retrieval efficiency as a function of the coupling power at 0.48 MHz two-photon detuning. The optimal retrieval efficiency reaches 25% when the coupling power is 100 mW. These results provide experimental reference for the quantum memory of continuous variables in the hot atom ensemble.

Group velocity study in hot 87 Rb vapour with buffer gas

George R. Welch, Eugeniy E. Mikhailov, Yuri V. Rostovtsev

We study the behavior of the group velocity of light under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a Doppler broadened medium. Specifically, we show how the group delay (or group velocity) of probe and generated Stokes fields depends on the one-photon detuning of drive and probe fields. We find that for atoms in a buffer gas the group velocity decreases with positive one-photon detuning of the drive fields, and increases when the fields are red detuned. This dependence is counter-intuitive to what would be expected if the one-photon detuning resulted in an interaction of the light with the resonant velocity subgroup.

Condition for Doppler-free three-photon resonance in a ladder-type atomic system

Yoon‐Seok Lee, Han Seb Moon

We report the essential condition for three-photon electromagnetically induced absorption (TPEIA) in a Doppler-broadened ladder-type atomic system. When the two coupling lasers operate at different frequencies, we observed Doppler-free TPEIA resonance at a counterintuitive frequency, which is the almost half-frequency detuning of the frequency difference between the two coupling fields. Considering three-photon coherence in a Doppler-broadened ladder-type three-level atomic system, the TPEIA due to the atomic group of non-zero velocity was in good agreement with the calculated TPEIA spectrum under the one-photon resonance condition of all three optical fields. From the results, we found that an atomic group with a proper velocity for ladder-type TPEIA should satisfy the one-photon resonances of all three optical fields.

Observation and theoretical simulation of dispersive properties of an electromagnetically induced transparent 87 Rb atomic medium

Arpita Das, Bankim Chandra Das, Shrabana Chakrabarti +2 more

Abstract The dispersive properties of 87 Rb atomic medium in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) have been studied experimentally as well as theoretically. To measure the dispersion signal, a balanced homodyne detection technique was used by forming a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. We studied the system in a Λ-type configuration. From the slope of the dispersive EIT signal, the group index ( n g ) of the atomic medium, the group velocity ( ) and the time delay ( ) of the light wave through the atomic medium were calculated. We measured the group index of the atomic medium from the dispersion signal and observed that it non-linearly depends on the pump power. This non-linearity signifies that to achieve the maximum reduced group velocity, optimization of the pump power is needed. We got the maximum reduction in the group velocity of the probe beam as m s −1 . The corresponding time delay was ns. To support our experimental observation, we have performed a theoretical simulation by taking the semi-classical approach of density matrix formalism of a Λ-type three level system. To get the probe response we solved the optical Bloch equation analytically assuming the Lorentzian velocity distribution of the atom. We have observed that our analytical solution matched exactly with the numerical solution. Our experimental observation of non-linear variation of the group index with the pump Rabi frequency matched quite well with both of our numerical and analytical simulations.

Slow light based on coherent hole-burning in a Doppler broadened three-level Λ-type atomic system

Shang-qi Kuang, Peng Dong Du, Ren-Gang Wan +2 more

We show theoretically that the propagation of light can be slowed down considerably using the method of coherent hole-burning in a Doppler broadened three-level lambda-type atomic medium without the Doppler-free configurations. The reduction of group velocity of light pulse is achieved by the application of a saturating beam and a strong coupling beam which produce a narrow spectral hole-burning at resonance. We can obtain a larger group index than that using the method of saturation absorption spectroscopy in Doppler-broadened two-level atomic systems.
