Abstract

In this paper, we have calculated the absorption of the probing field in a N-type four-level atomic system with three dipole transitions using density matrix equation. The results indicate that the absorption or amplification of the probing field depends on the Rabi phases of the control field and signal field under introducing laser field Rabi phase, and the absorption or amplification periodically changes with the Rabi phases of the control field and the signal field at a period of 2π. The Rabi phase change of the probe field has no effect on the absorption. In addition, the effect of the signal field Rabi phase on absorption is the same as that of the control field Rabi phase on absorption. Rabi phase has an effect mainly on atomic coherence but little on atomic population.

Electromagnetically induced absorption in four-level atomic system

Wang Li, Song Hai-Zhen, 南阳师范学院物理系,南阳 473061

A four-level atomic system is employed as an example, in which three transitions are in N configuration and the middle transition is used as a probe transition. We show that electromagnetically induced absorption and electromagnetically induced transparency can appear in the four-level N-type atomic system, which are dependent not only on the spontaneous transfer of atomic coherence, but also on the relaxation of the fourth level, the Rabi frequency of the coupling and the control field.

Formation of field induced absorption in the probe response signal of a four-level V type atomic system a theoretical study

Khairul Islam, Ghosh, Arindam, Dipankar Bhattacharyya +1 more

A density matrix based analytical model is developed to study the coherent probe field propagation through a four-level V type system in presence of a coherent control field. The model allows coupling of the probe field from the upper ground level to both of the excited levels keeping the control field locked to a particular transition. The addition of an extra ground level to a conventional three-level V type system creates extra decay paths to the ground levels for the upper level population. A set of sixteen density matrix based equations are formed and then solved analytically under rotating wave approximation to study the probe response under steady state condition. The simulated probe absorption spectra shows absorption dip at the centre of a transparency window only under Doppler broadened condition although the conventional EIT window appears under Doppler free condition. The dependence of the field induced absorption signal on the Rabi frequency of the control field, population transfer rate among the ground levels and temperature of the vapour medium has been studied in details.

Effects of Laser Field Linewidth on Electromagnetically Induced Absorption

Xiao Shao-wu

Using matrix equation,we have calculated the absorpion of the prople field in the four-level atomic system in which three transitions are in N configuration under introducing laser field linewidth. We have done researches on the effects of laser field linewidth on electromagnetically induced absorption. The results indicate that atomic coherence of the four-level atomic system will be abated when the laser field linewidth is build up and laser field linewidth inhibits electromagnetically induced absorption.

The Absorption and Dispersion Properties in a Four-level Inverted-Y Atomic System

Jun Zeng

A four-level atomic system in an inverted-Y configuration interacted with three optical fields has been investigated and the properties of absorption and dispersion in different control optical fields have been discussed. The electromagnetic induced transparency would be obtained by choosing proper parameters while the optical nonlinearity of the system would be changed with external fields. The numerical results also show the probe gain via changing phases of Rabi frequency.

Theoretical study of the control of absorption, transparency, and amplification in a microwave- and RF-driven four-level (Δ + ∇)-type closed-contour interaction system

Aparajita Das, Jayanta K. Saha, Md. Mabud Hossain

Abstract This paper describes a theoretical study of the optical responses of an atomic medium to the probe field in a four-level (Δ + ∇)-type closed-contour interaction system driven by two pump laser fields (P1, P2), one probe laser field (Pr) and two microwave or radio frequency (RF) coupling fields (L, U). Here, L and U are considered to connect the forbidden electric dipole transitions, i.e. two hyperfine ground states of the Δ subsystem and two hyperfine excited states of the ∇ subsystem, respectively. Since each subsystem is a closed-loop system, relative phases are thought to be present between the optical fields (pump and probe fields), and the microwave or RF fields. The manipulation of the quantum coherence of the system by the strengths of coupling fields along with the relative phases is demonstrated in terms of the changes occurring in the absorption of the probe field by the medium. The probe absorption and dispersion profiles are extracted by numerically solving the optical Bloch equations for the system under steady-state conditions. In this study, we start by illuminating the system with the probe only, and then, by applying the pump fields and the coupling fields one by one, the changes in the absorptive and dispersive probe line profiles are investigated for two distinct cases that depend on the relative strengths of the pump fields, e.g. when P2 is stronger than P1 and vice versa. Furthermore, the individual effects of the strengths and phases of the coupling fields on the probe absorption, transparency and amplification are also explored for both cases. All the changes that appear in the probe signal as a result of the application of different fields are explained by the modified interaction fields or the corresponding effective Rabi frequencies obtained from the partial dressed-state analysis.
