Abstract

We present a simple and efficient method for measuring the atomic lifetimes in order of tens of microseconds and demonstrate it in the lifetime determination of barium Rydberg states. This method extracts the lifetime information from the time-of-flight spectrum directly, which is much more efficient than other methods such as the time-delayed field ionization and the traditional laser induced fluorescence. The lifetimes determined with our method for barium Rydberg 6snp (n=37–59) series are well coincident with the values deduced from the absolute oscillator strengths of barium which were given in the literature [ J. Phys. B 14 (1981) 4489 , 29 (1996) 655 ] on experiments.

Measurement of the lifetime of the 5d6pF31 state of barium

Paul E. Jessop, F. M. Pipkin

A delayed-coincidence technique has been used to measure the lifetime of the $5d6p^{1}F_{3}$ state of atomic barium. An intermediate, $6s5d^{1}D_{2}$ metastable state of barium atoms in an atomic beam was populated by electron bombardment, and a pulsed cw laser was employed to excite atoms from the metastable state to the $5d6p^{1}F_{3}$ state. A time-to-amplitude convertor was used to measure the time distribution of the fluorescent light. The value obtained for the lifetime was (44.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.8) nsec.

Measurement of Rydberg positronium fluorescence lifetimes

Adam Deller, A. Alonso, B. S. Cooper +2 more

We report measurements of the fluorescence lifetimes of positronium (Ps) atoms with principal quantum numbers $n=10--19$. Ps atoms in Rydberg-Stark states were produced via a two-color two-step $1\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{3}S\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{3}P\ensuremath{\rightarrow}n\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{3}S/n\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{3}D$ excitation scheme and subsequently detected after traveling 1.2 m. The measured time-of-flight distributions were used to determine the mean lifetimes of the Rydberg levels, yielding values ranging from $3\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$ to $26\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$. Our data are in accord with the expected radiative lifetimes of Rydberg-Stark states of Ps.

Lifetimes of Rydberg levels in the perturbed 6snp 3 P2 series of ytterbium i

Guo Chuan, Yingning Yu, Hua Yu +2 more

Using three-step laser excitation in an atomic beam and a time-resolved spectroscopy technique, we measured both the lifetimes of the Rydberg levels of Yb i belonging to the perturbed series 6nsp $^{3}$${\mathit{P}}_{2}$ and the lifetimes of the perturbing 4${\mathit{f}}^{13}$5${\mathit{d}}^{2}$6s $^{3}$${\mathit{P}}_{2}$${,}^{1}$${\mathit{D}}_{2}$ levels. An expected shortening has been observed for the lifetimes of those levels which are strongly mixed with the perturbers.

All-optical measurement of Rydberg-state lifetimes

Markus Mack, Jens Grimmel, Florian Karlewski +3 more

We have developed an all-optical method for measuring the lifetimes of $nS$ and $nD$ Rydberg states and demonstrate its capabilities with measurements on a dilute cloud of ultracold $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms in a cryogenic environment. The method is based on the time-resolved observation of resonant light absorption by ground-state atoms and selective transfer of Rydberg atoms into the ground state at varying delay times in order to reconstruct Rydberg decay curves. Our measurements of the $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ $30{S}_{1/2}$ state indicate an increase of the lifetime at lowered environment temperatures, as expected due to decreased blackbody radiation. For the $38{D}_{5/2}$ state with an attractive dipole-dipole interaction, ionization and lifetime reduction due to collisional effects are observed.

Double-Rydberg spectroscopy of the barium atom

Jacques Boulmer, Pierre Camus, P. Pillet

Methods of excitation and analysis of double-Rydberg states of the neutral barium atom are discussed. Spectra of 9dn′d double-Rydberg series of barium are studied and interpreted in a two-channel quantum-defect model. An example of stabilization for the 9d5/227d state is shown. We propose a new investigative method for Rydberg levels of the Ba+ ion that is based on a microwave-ionization process coupled with a double time-of-flight mass spectrometer. This novel setup permits us to obtain initial experimental evidence of highly excited double-Rydberg states, 26dn′p and 27sn′p (n′ ≳ 45), of the barium atom.

Measurement of lifetime of ultracold cesium Rydberg states

Zhigang Feng, Hao Zhang, Linjie Zhang +3 more

In this paper, the cold cesium atoms are excited to Rydberg states via two-photon transition and the ion signal of Rydberg atoms is obtained by the selective field-ionization method. The evolution of the 36D and 34S states population is acquired by changing delay time; the corresponding effective lifetimes are obtained by fitting the experimental data, which are in agreement with the existing theoretical results.
