Abstract

We study the optical bistability for a Bose—Einstein condensate of atoms in a driven optical cavity with a Kerr medium. We find that both the threshold point of optical bistability transition and the width of optical bistability hysteresis can be controlled by appropriately adjusting the Kerr interaction between the photons. In particular, we show that the optical bistability will disappear when the Kerr interaction exceeds a critical value.

Controllable optical bistability in a cavity optomechanical system with a Bose–Einstein condensate

Seyedeh Hamideh Kazemi, Saeed Ghanbari, Mohammad Mahmoudi

Abstract The optical bistability (OB) in a two-mode optomechanical system with a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) is studied. By investigating the behavior of steady state solutions, we show that how OB develops in the system for a certain range of cavity-pump detunings and pump amplitudes. We then investigate the effects of the decay rate of the cavity photons and coupling strength between the cavity and the BEC as well as the pump-atom detuning on the optical behaviour of the system. We find that one can control the OB threshold and width of the bistability curve via adjusting properly the coupling strength and the detuning. By applying Routh–Hurwitz criterion, we then derive stability conditions for different branches of the OB curve. Moreover, by introducing an effective potential for the system, a simple physical interpretation is obtained.

Optical Bistability and Normal-Mode Splitting of Two-Species Bose-Einstein Condensates in An Optical Cavity

Neha Aggarwal, Shweta, Aranya B. Bhattacherjee +1 more

We investigate the optical bistable behavior for a weakly interacting two-species Bose-Einstein condensates inside a pumped optical cavity by considering the two possible regimes- the phase mixed regime and the phase segregated regime. We find that the cavity-pump detuning plays a significant role in controlling the threshold of the optical bistability and the constrast between the bistability values depending upon the state we are working in. We also demonstrate the occurence of normal mode splitting in the optical spectrum for both the regimes which further showing the position and amplitude discrepancies in the spectral peaks.

Controlling the quantum phase transition of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate inside an optical cavity

In this paper we investigate the nonlinear effect of atomic collisions on the threshold of quantum phase transition in a system consisting of a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped inside an optical cavity in which the atoms are pumped optically form a direction perpendicular to the cavity axis. We show that by manipulating the atomic interaction strength, one can control the critical point of the phase transition.

Optical bistability via quantum interference in a four-level atomic medium

Xin‐You Lü, Jiahua Li, Ji-Bing Liu +1 more

We theoretically investigate optical bistability (OB) behaviour in a four-level atomic system confined in a unidirectional ring cavity. It is shown that OB can be controlled by adjusting the intensity of the coupling field and the value of the cooperativity parameter. More importantly, our numerical results show that the threshold intensity of OB can be reduced without decreasing the range of the hysteresis loop via adjusting the effect of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) or the relative phase between two applied fields. The influence of the frequency detuning of the coupling field on the OB behaviour is also discussed.

Controllable optical switch using a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical cavity

Shuai Yang, M. Al-Amri, Jörg Evers +1 more

The optical bistability of an ultracold atomic ensemble located in a small-volume ultrahigh-finesse optical cavity is investigated. We find that a transverse pumping field can be used to control the bistable behavior of the intracavity photons induced by the input pumping along the cavity axis. This phenomenon can be used as a controllable optical switch.
