Abstract

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is one of the best-known examples of an application of quantum mechanics to cryptography. This article serves as a resource letter, a brief description to the introduction of QKD is provided before surveying the most prominent QKD protocols present in the literature from theoretical initialization by Wiesner to the attempts at practical implementations. We have also given an overview of the different security proofs proposed, for the variations in protocols and highlighted their significance.

Quantum Cryptography–A Theoretical Overview

Pratik Roy, Saptarshi Sahoo, Amit Kumar Mandal +1 more

Quantum Key Distribution seems very promising as it offers unconditional security, that’s why it is being implemented by the tech giants of the networking industry and government. Having quantum phenomenon as a backbone, QKD protocols become indecipherable. Here we have focused on the complexities of quantum key distribution and how this technology has contributed to secure key communication. This article gives an updated overview of this technology and can serve as a guide to get familiar with the current trends of quantum cryptography.

An Overview of Quantum Key Distribution Protocols

Anastasija Trizna, Andris O. Ozols

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is the objects of close attention and rapid progress due to the fact that once first quantum computers are available – classical cryptography systems will become partially or completely insecure. The potential threat to today’s information security cannot be neglected, and efficient quantum computing algorithms already exist. Quantum cryptography brings a completely new level of security and is based on quantum physics principles, comparing with the classical systems that rely on hard mathematical problems. The aim of the article is to overview QKD and the most conspicuous and prominent QKD protocols, their workflow and security basement. The article covers 17 QKD protocols and each introduces novel ideas for further QKD system improvement.

A brief introduction of quantum cryptography for engineers

Bing Qi, Liping Qian, Hoi‐Kwong Lo

We present the fundamental principles behind quantum key distribution and discuss a few well-known QKD protocols. Bearing in mind that the majority of our readers are from engineering and experimental optics, we focus more on the experimental implementation of various QKD protocols rather than security analysis. Another important topic that is covered here is the study of the security of practical QKD systems.

A Survey on Quantum Key Distribution

László Gyöngyösi, László Bacsárdi, Sándor Imre

Quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols represent an important practical application of quantum information theory. QKD schemes enable legal parties to establish unconditionally secret communication by exploiting the fundamental attributes of quantum mechanics. Here we present an overview of QKD rotocols. We review the principles of QKD systems, the implementation basis, and the application of QKD protocols in the standard Internet and the quantum Internet.

Variations of QKD Protocols Based on Conventional System Measurements: A Literature Review

Abdulbast A. Abushgra

Cryptography is an unexpected revolution in information security in the recent decades, where remarkable improvements have been created to provide confidentiality and integrity. Quantum cryptography is one such improvement that has grown rapidly since the first announced protocol. Quantum cryptography contains substantial elements that must be addressed to ensure secure communication between legitimate parties. Quantum key distribution (QKD), a technique for creating a secret key, is one of the most interesting areas in quantum cryptography. This paper reviews some well-known quantum key distribution techniques that have been demonstrated in the past three decades. Furthermore, this paper discusses the process of creating a secret key using quantum mechanics and cryptography methods. Moreover, it explains the relationships between many basic aspects of QKD protocols and suggests some improvements in the cryptosystem. An accurate quantitative comparison between the QKD protocols is presented, especially the runtime execution for each QKD protocol. In addition, the paper will demonstrate a general model of each considered QKD protocol based on security principles.

Quantum Key Distribution Protocols: A Survey ♠

Mohamed Elboukhari, Mostafa Azizi, Abdelmalek Azizi

Most cryptographic mechanisms, such as symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, often involve the use of cryptographic keys. However, all cryptographic techniques will be ineffective if th e key distribution mechanism is weak. The security of most modern cryptographic systems of key distribution mechanism is based on computational co mplexity and the extraordinary time needed to break the code. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) or Quantum Cryptography is attracting much attention as a solution of the problem of key distribution; QKD of fers unconditionally secure communication based on quantum mechanics. In this article we survey the mo st popular QKD protocols. Also, we give a short state of the art of Quantum Cryptography.
