This paper proposes a novel code-construction method for constructing (3, k) regular low density parity check (LDPC) codes. Other methods of designing regular LDPC codes suffer from rank-deficiency of H and high encoding complexity. The basic design of the proposed code-construction utilizes deterministic base matrices of information part and parity part in three stages of code-construction to achieve no rank-deficiency of H, no girth of 4-cycles, non-singular parity part (Hpar) and low encoding complexity. It is shown that the proposed (3, k) regular LDPC codes perform better in high code rate application. The result of (3, 42) regular code performs 0.97 dB from Shannon limit at BER 10-6when the value of code rate R = 0.928, code length N = 14364 and encoding complexity of the order of O(1.0225 N).

This paper is a continuation of the work in [15] wherein a novel code-construction method was proposed for constructing (3, k) regular LDPC codes. In this paper, the (3, k) construction technique is generalized to construct (5, k) regular code. The basic design of the proposed code-construction utilizes deterministic base matrices for information part and parity part in three stages of code-construction to achieve no rank-deficiency of H, no girth of 4-cycles, non-singular parity part (Hpar) and low encoding complexity. A typical performance of proposed (5, k) regular LDPC codes has been shown.
This paper, based on algebra and graph, proposes a method for constructing structured low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes. In this method, the authors design a connected graph with three kinds of special path to ensure that the Tanner graph of the parity check matrix mapped from the connected graph is without short cycles. The construction method results in two classes of(3,k)-regular quasi-cyclic LDPC codes with girth 8 and 12 respectively.Furthermore,by extending this construction method, two classes of LDPC codes with column weight 2,whose girths are respectively 16 and 24,can be obtained. The simulation studies show that these codes can achieve better performance than randomly constructed regular LDPC codes over AWGN channels with iterative decoding. At the BER of 10-5,the new proposed(3,6)-regular(4356,2205) QC-LDPC code performs 1.48dB from the Shannon limit. Moreover,it outperforms the random regular LDPC code of comparable parameters by 0.1dB.For the new proposed structured LDPC codes with column weight 2,they can achieve about 2dB coding gains with respect to the random regular LDPC codes with similar block lengths and code rates.
There is an important breakthrough in the field of forward error correction techniques, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. These codes have potential to approach the Shannon limit with reliable performance on a given channel, known as the channel capacity. Recently, researchers pay much more attention towards LDPC codes because its performance is better than Turbo codes. However, the LDPC code is the best when it is an irregular code and uses with a very large block-length. Although, the short block-length LDPC codes perform not so well, they are easy to implement in various practical applications. Therefore, there is still a demand of new development on the encoding side of LDPC codes for various ranges of code rate and code length so as to capable of using in many applications. This thesis proposes the development of quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes for column weight 3. In the first part of this thesis, we propose a new construction algorithm of QC-LDPC codes for medium to large block-length by combining QC-LDPC codes of small block-length as their component codes, via Chinese remainder theorem (CRT). Such component codes were constructed by permuting each column block sequentially to attain the desire local girth. After combining all component codes to generate an expanded parity-check matrix, the resulting girth is greater than or at least equal to the maximum girth of the component codes. Simulation results show that our proposed construction method of the parity-check matrix significantly outperforms the other well-known existing methods in terms of low error-floor, simple structure, high performance, and can reduce encoding complexity. In addition, this thesis also proposes two new construction methods for QC-LDPC codes, namely a base matrix method and a subtraction based method. A base matrix based method is a simple, less computational complexity method for constructing the exponent matrix (3, K) of girth 8, 10 and 12 of QC-LDPC codes. Another method is a subtraction method, which has a similar exponent matrix as a base matrix method and has a girth at least 8. Results indicate that the LDPC codes constructed from these two methods have flexibility for arbitrary block-column length K and have a similar BER performance if compared to existing methods.
For a high-rate case, it is difficult to randomly construct good low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes of short and moderate lengths because their Tanner graphs are prone to have short cycles. Also, the existing high-rate quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes can be constructed only for very restricted code parameters. In this paper, based on special classes of cyclic difference families, we propose a new construction method of high-rate regular QC LDPC codes having parity-check matrices consisting of a single row of circulants with column-weight 3 or 4. The proposed QC LDPC codes can be constructed for various code rates and lengths including the minimum achievable length for given column-weight and design rate under girth 6. It is observed that the parity-check matrices of the proposed QC LDPC codes have full rank for column-weight 3 and just one redundant row for column-weight 4. It is shown that the error correcting performance of the proposed QC LDPC codes of short and moderate lengths is almost the same as that of the existing ones through numerical analysis.
With the rapid expansion of communication networks, there has been an increasing demand for efficient and reliable digital data transmission and storage systems. Many efficient codes have been developed. The LDPC code is one of them. In this thesis, the sum-product algorithm is used in the decoding of LDPC codes. Some schemes for encoding LDPC codes have been studied. In particular, two methods of producing regular H matrices have been attempted that include short cycles of length four with code rates of 0.5, and we present three schemes of finding regular H matrices which do not include short cycles of length four with code rate being 0.5. The effect of short cycles in the bipartite graph of regular LDPC codes has been considered. The simulation results show that the BER performances of regular H matrices that do not include short cycles of length four based on BPSK or 8PSK on AWGN channel is better than those of regular H matrices that include short cycles of length four. In conclusion, in order to obtain good performance with LDPC code, one should design H matrix related to bipartite graph without short cycles.
Abstract Recent breakthroughs in forward error correction, in the form of low-density parity-check(LDPC) and turbo codes, have seen the promise of near Shannon limit information trans-mission realised. The deterministic construction of good codes, for LDPC codes in par-ticular, is currently the subject of intense interest in the research and development com-munity. This thesis adds to this field, developing methods and supporting theory for thedesign of algebraic LDPC codes using incidence structures from combinatorial designs. The benefits of this approach are guaranteed code properties, parameter flexibility, easeof implementation and reduced encoding complexity. In the first part of this thesis Steiner 2-designs and partial geometries are used toprovide systematic constructions of regular LDPC codes with Tanner graphs free of 4-cyclesandwithdeterministiccodeproperties. Drawingextensivelyfromexistingincidencestructures we present new families of algebraic LDPC codes with benefits over traditionalrandomly constructed regular codes, particularly where small-to-medium length codes areconcerned. We focus in particular on exploring the effect of different design propertieson the code parameters by deriving the rate, minimum distance, girth, and stopping setdistribution of LDPC codes from designs. In the second part of this thesis resolvable designs are employed to create regularLDPC codes free of 4-cycles with the parameter flexibility and decoding performance ofrandomly constructed regular LDPC codes. Employing resolvability greatly extends theclass of LDPC codes that can be algebraically constructed. These codes can offer sig-nificant implementation advantages due to the deterministic structure of their resolutionclasses and in some cases their simple encoding.A shortcoming of LDPC codes is their potentially high encoding complexity, whichis generally quadratic in the code length. Finding computationally efficient encodersis therefore critical for LDPC codes to be considered as serious contenders for futuregenerations of forward error correction devices. As a result the purpose of the last part ofthis thesis is to design codes which have the graph-based properties necessary to performwell with sum-product decoding but which are also cyclic or quasi-cyclic and so can beencoded simply. The main focus is regular codes but we also extend our constructionof quasi-cyclic codes to produce irregular LDPC codes with simple linear-time encodingcircuits.
