A photon counting estimates distribution of the average number of photons in coherent pulses

Abstract

A statistical model linking the probability of detecting photons in a photon counting experiment to the average number of input photons is used to analytically derive an error distribution of the estimates of the average number of photons in coherent input pulses. The estimates distribution determines the required number of experimental count runs required for an acceptable measurement error, for any value of the average number of input photons. An expression for the minimum detectable power by photon counting is obtained, fully capturing the effect of the photon counting statistics thereby completing an earlier analysis.

Graph-analytical method for estimating single photon synchronization parameters of an autocompensation quantum key distribution system

Konstantin E. Rumyantsev, Рудинский Евгений Андреевич

In this article we describe the graph-analytical method for estimating single-photon synchronization parameters of an auto-compensation quantum key distribution system. In this paper is formed and described diagram of states and transitions for random search for a photon pulse with allowance for false detection. Based on the results of the analysis, expressions are defined for calculating the mathematical expectation, dispersion and average number of steps spent on the synchronization process. The interval for the average number of steps used for the synchronization process is determined. The average synchronization time according to the proposed algorithm is estimated considering the probability of false alarm. The calculations showed that the error in determining the mean synchronization time according to the expressions is no more than 1.7%. Thus, the graph-analytic method for estimating the single-photon synchronization parameters of the QKD auto-compensation system allows to determine the statistical characteristics and the average synchronization time with a low error.

Detector of novel type for quantum key distribution and telecommunications, a photon-number resolving superconducting nanowire detector, is proposed. The Poisson distribution is utilized to describe statistics of incoming photons and photo-counts of the detector and to derive relations for bit-error ratio. Number of photons per pulse required to obtain acceptable bit error ratio while using the detector in classic communication channel is estimated. Qualitative formula is derived, describing dependency of required average number of photons per pulse on bit-error ratio in the limit of high signal-to-noise ratio of the line. The formula can be used for characterizing applicability of photon-number resolving detectors in telecommunication protocols with the required bit-error ratio. The numerical calculations are performed, confirming applicability of the analytical formula. Thereby, the availability of superconducting nanowire detector for long-distance telecommunication with standard single-mode fiber is demonstrated.

Accuracy of sampling quantum phase space in a photon counting experiment

We study the accuracy of determining the phase space quasi-distribution of a single quantized light mode by a photon counting experiment. We derive an exact analytical formula for the error of the experimental outcome. This result provides an estimate of the experimental parameters, such as the number of events, required to determine the quasi-distribution with assumed precision. Our analysis also shows that it is, in general, not possible to compensate for the imperfection of the photodetector in the numerical processing of the experimental data. The discussion is illustrated with Monte Carlo simulations of the photon counting experiment for the coherent state, the one photon Fock state, and the Schrödinger cat state.
