Phase control of pulses in coherently prepared media

Abstract

The spatiotemporal dynamics of pulse-pair propagation in prepared media is investigated under two-photon resonance. A vector model is presented for the observation of the phase regulation of the temporal evolution of the coherent pulses. The results show how the phase and amplitude of one pulse are altered with the use of another pulse at the input of the detuning medium.

Coherence-induced effects in pulse-pair propagation through absorbing media

Gautam Vemuri, Kashyap V. Vasavada, G. S. Agarwal +1 more

The propagation of a pair of electromagnetic pulses through a coherently prepared atomic medium in the \ensuremath{\Lambda} configuration is studied. We find that even in an absorbing medium, it is possible to produce pulses that propagate shape invariant. The results reveal the spatiotemporal dynamics associated with field propagation, and highlight the role of atom preparation, pulse intensities, and medium length, on the final output pulses that one obtains. We also explore the prospects for pulse shaping and control by using dissimilar shaped pulses at the input to the medium and following their evolution. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Dressed-field pulses in an absorbing medium

Joseph H. Eberly, M. Ll. Pons, H. R. Haq

We have carried out a series of numerical experiments on the propagation of optical pulse pairs in absorbing media under one-photon and two-photon resonant lambda-system conditions. We report the first observation of the spatial evolution of ``dressed-field'' pulses, the exact analog of the temporal evolution of dressed-atom states.

Dynamical control of pulse propagation in electromagnetically induced transparency

Martin Kiffner, Tarak Nath Dey

The influence of a phase-modulated control field on the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is investigated theoretically. We show that the phase modulation changes the dispersive properties of the medium considerably since it results in temporal oscillations of the transparency window in frequency space. This is in marked contrast to the standard EIT setup, where the transparency window is fixed and determined by the two-photon resonance condition. In particular, we find that the phase modulation enables the propagation of probe pulses with disjoint frequency spectra at different times and allows the shifting of the central frequency of a probe pulse almost without distortion of its shape. We employ the time-dependent susceptibility of the medium to explain and analyze our results and demonstrate that this concept yields qualitative as well as quantitative agreement with the numerical integration of Maxwell-Bloch equations. Our theoretical model can be applied to other media with time-dependent susceptibilities.

Coherent effects during propagation of ultrashort light pulses in a medium under two-photon interaction conditions

I A Poluéktov, Yurii M Popov, V S Roĭtberg

An analysis is made of the evolution of high-power laser pulses in the case of coherent two-photon interaction with resonant media. It is shown that pulses of frequencies ω 0 and ω s satisfying the equalit ω 0 ±ω 0 =ω 21 (ω 21 is the resonance frequency of the medium) experience splitting into separate subpulses followed by a reduction in their duration and increase in their power. The efficiency of this process depends on the initial ratio of the amplitudes E 0 and E s . It is shown that such effects can be observed in paramagnetic acoustic resonance.

Propagation and nonlinear generation dynamics in a coherently prepared four-level system

Emmanuel Paspalakis, Niels J. Kylstra, P. L. Knight

We explore the laser-pulse propagation dynamics when one, two, or three pulses resonantly drive a coherently prepared four-level medium in a tripod configuration. If the system is prepared in a coherent superposition of two of the lower levels, we show that two incident resonant pulses can parametrically generate a third pulse in the medium. Over short distances, the propagation of this generated pulse can be partially controlled by varying the Rabi frequency of one of the driving fields. For a medium prepared in a coherent superposition of the three lower levels, we obtain a general expression for a three-photon Beer's length. Under specific conditions, the medium can either become completely opaque or completely transparent to three incident resonant pulses. Moreover, a single incident pulse can be used to parametrically generate two additional pulses. Finally, a general relationship is found that links the amplitudes of the initial superposition of states and the amplitudes of the pulses at large distances in the medium, implying that the initial superposition can be used to engineer the amplitudes of the exiting pulses.

Dynamic spatiotemporal pulse shaping in two-photon active biomolecular media

Edeltraud Gehrig, Ortwin G. Hess

The propagation of ultrashort light pulses in two-photon media is investigated on the basis of a density-matrix formalism for the molecular levels and a wave equation for the dynamics of the light fields. The simulation shows that the dynamic light-matter coupling and level dynamics lead to saturation effects and space-dependent pulse shaping that determine the dynamic response of the molecular medium.
