Abstract

We drove the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2 /-/sup 2/D/sub 5/12/ transition of laser-cooled trapped Yb/sup +/ by frequency-doubled diode-laser radiation. The /sup 2/F/sub 7/2/ state, pumped by driving this transition, was deexcited by irradiation at 3.43 /spl mu/m, 638 nm, and 828 nm.

High-resolution spectroscopy of the 435 nm /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-/sup 2/D/sub 3/2/ transition in trapped /sup 171/Yb/sup +/

Chr. Tamm, V. Bühner

Single /sup 171/Yb ions are laser cooled in a miniature radiofrequency trap. We demonstrate high-resolution spectroscopy of the potential frequency-standard reference transition from the F=0 ground-state sublevel to the metastable /sup 2/D/sub 3/2/ (F=2, m/sub F/=0) level at a wavelength of 435 nm. Presently achieved minimum linewidths are in the range of 80 Hz.

Diode-laser-based light sources for laser cooling of trapped Yb/sup +/ ions

K. Sugiyama, A. Wakita, A. Nakata

We are developing a light source at 370 nm for driving the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ cooling transition by sum-frequency mixing of radiation from two diode lasers with a doubly resonant external cavity. To drive the /sup 2/D/sub 3/2/-/sup 3/D[3/2]/sub 1/2/ repumping transition at 935 nm, we developed two types of external cavity diode lasers. Applications of them to laser-cooled trapped Yb/sup +/ ions are also presented.

Summary form only given, as follows.Single /sup 171/Yb ions are laser cooled in a Paul trap, using laser sources based on semiconductor diode lasers. Excitation of the potential frequency-standard reference transition to the /sup 2/D/sub 3/2/, (F=2) hyperfine sublevel of /sup 171/Yb/sup +/ at a wavelength of 435.5 nm is demonstrated.

Studies of laser-cooled trapped Yb/sup +/ (frequency standard)

/sup 172/Yb/sup +/ ions in an RF trap have been laser-cooled to 2 K by driving the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ transition at 369.5 nm. Observations of metastable F-state populations at low pressure are reported for large numbers of Yb/sup +/ ions in the trap. A narrow-linewidth ring dye laser for probing an S-D or S-F transition in trapped Yb/sup +/ is considered.>

Excitation of the /sup 3/P/sub 0 /state is detected in optical-optical double resonance via the dark periods in the fluorescence on the fast /sup 1/S/sub 0/ /sup 3/P/sub 1/ transition. The dye laser formerly used to excite this line was recently replaced by a diode-based laser system: a grating stabilized diode at 922 nm, further frequency stabilized onto a Fabry-Perot interferometer, is seeded into a tapered amplifier. Subsequent frequency-quadrupling employing a periodically poled KTP and a BBO crystal, each placed in an external enhancement cavity, leads to the right frequency at 231 nm. For the /sup 1/S/sub 0/ /sup 3/P/sub 0/ transition a resolution of 1.3 /spl times/ 10/sup -13 /has been achieved so far, limited by the frequency instability of the Nd:YAG laser. The short-term frequency stability of this laser has been strongly improved recently. With a new laser setup a linewidth < 5 Hz (FWHM) for integration times /spl times/30 s has been achieved using active vibration isolation platforms for the reference cavity. Recent progress of that work is reported.

Study of Yb/sup +/ trapped in a RF trap with light buffer gas by irradiation with resonant light (frequency standards)

K. Sugiyama, Jun Yoda

The characteristics of Yb/sup +/ held in a RF trap in the presence of a light buffer gas by irradiation with resonant light beams, including those for depleting the metastable state of the /sup 2/D/sub 3/2/ and /sup 2/F/sub 7/2/ states, are studied. Further investigation is made concerning the disappearance of ionic detection signals via RF resonance absorption by irradiation with the radiation driving the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ transition.>
