Abstract

A new simulation model of the Josephson junction array coupled with a Fabry-Perot resonator is presented in this paper, which considered the excitation of the resonance mode by the array and the influence of the resonance mode on the array. Taking advantage of the new model, we investigate the phase-locking properties of the junctions. The results include the influence of the Q value of the resonator, the strength of the coupling between the junctions and the resonator as well as the number of junctions in the array on the phase locking properties. It is useful in the detection of THz signal and fabrication of THz sources using Josephson junction arrays.

Bicrystal Josephson junctions and arrays in a Fabry-Perot resonator

Alexander M. Klushin, D. M. Druzhnov, N. Klein

Full frequency locking of an array of 121 Josephson junctions was demonstrated upon millimeter wave irradiation employing a Fabry-Perot resonator at 73 GHz. This result indicates that such arrays exhibit promising properties to be utilized in quantum voltage metrology. On the other hand, the combination of such arrays with THz-Fabry Perot resonators is very challenging for developing Josephson array radiation sources for the THz frequency band.

Two dimensional Josephson junction array oscillators

Bin Liu

We have designed and fabricated two dimensional Josephson junction arrays as sub- THz oscillators. These arrays are integrated with various coupling structures and fabricated on one side of substrates with the other side of substrates metalized to form resonant cavities behind the arrays. The radiation is coupled out from broadside. The I-V curve measurement has been done, but none of the I-V curves has shown a strong indication of phase locking of the array at this time.

A method for self-radiation of Josephson junction arrays

Zh Wang, Xinjie Zhao, H W Yue +6 more

We proposed a novel approach to self-radiation of Josephson junction arrays. Bicrystal Josephson junction arrays fabricated on a bicrystal substrate were integrated with a half-wavelength dipole array and embedded in a Fabry–Perot resonator. Considered as a dielectric resonator, the substrate could be stimulated to resonate in an appropriate mode at the same frequency as the Fabry–Perot resonator, which realized a coupling between Josephson junctions as well as a coupling between the junctions and microwave structures by means of a resonant interaction between junctions and resonators. Both simulations and experiments were performed. A YBCO bicrystal Josephson junction array with 166 junctions was measured at liquid nitrogen temperature. The maximal self-radiation power of 10 pW was detected at 75.2 GHz, which was in agreement with the simulation results.

Quasi-optical Josephson-junction oscillator arrays

Jeff A. Stern, Henry George LeDuc, Jonas Stasys Zmuidzinas

Josephson junctions are natural voltage-controlled oscillators capable of generating submillimeter-wave-length radiation, but a single junction usually can produce only 100 nW of power and often has a broad spectral linewidth. The authors are investigating 2-D quasi-optical power combining arrays of 10/sup 3/ and 10/sup 4/ NbN/MgO/NbN and Nb/Al-AlO/sub x//Nb junctions to overcome these limitations. The junctions are DC biased in parallel and are distributed along interdigitated lines. The arrays couple to a resonant mode of a Fabry-Perot cavity to achieve mutual phase-locking. The array configuration has a relatively low impedance, which should allow the capacitance of the junctions to be tuned out at the oscillation frequency.>

High-frequency oscillators using phase-locked arrays of Josephson junctions

Samuel P. Benz, P.A.A. Booi

We present a basic description of Josephson junctions and discuss their use as GHz and THz oscillators. The resistively shunted junction model is used to calculate the available power, linewidth, and operating frequency of the oscillators. We discuss how phase-locked arrays of junctions are used to achieve higher power and narrower linewidth. Two experimental examples of phase-locked emission are shown: one from on-chip detection circuits at 150 GHz and one detected off-chip showing a 13-kHz linewidth at 88.8 GHz.>

Millimeter wavelength coherent emission from high temperature superconducting bicrystal Josephson junction array

Yue Hong-Wei, Zheng Wang, Fan Bin +6 more

The experimental results of mm-wave coherent emission from a high temperature superconducting bicrystal Josephson junction array embedded in a Fabry-Perot resonator are reported in this paper. The mm-wave coherent emission from the series junction array results from the interaction of the junctions with the substrate serving as the dielectric resonator as well as the Fabry-Perot resonator. The central frequency of emission of a Josephson junction array containing 166 bicrystal junctions was 75.84 GHz,and the detected emission power was about 10 pW at 77 K.
