Abstract

We investigate the quantum interference effects in a cyclic three-level system with a microwave field driving transition between two low levels. By solving the relative density matrix equations of motion, we obtain the absorption profile of the probe field and identify the conditions under which gain may develop. We demonstrate numerically that the absorption line shape depends on the ratio of the intensities of coupling and driving microwave field. When the intensity of coupling field is much weaker than that of driving field, there is a multi-EITs in the probe absorption spectrum. However, if the intensity of both fields is strong, amplification without inversion occurs in different regime of probe frequency. In addition, we predict that larger amplification is obtained when the coupling field is detuned from exact resonance.

Electromagnetically induced absorption in Λ-three-level system driven by bichromatic coupling field

Lijun Yang, Zhan-fei Yan, Yu-ning Wang +1 more

The probe absorption spectrum of the Λ-three-level system driven by bichromatic coupling field and weak probe field is investigated. We obtain the probe absorption spectra for different frequency detunings of coupling field by solving the density matrix equation and numerical analysis. Three electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) peaks are simultaneously observed in the absorption profile of probe field. We report the dependence of position and relative intensity of EIA on the frequency detuning of the bichromatic coupling field. The results show that central EIA always appears at the resonant frequency of probe field, with the constant intensity. The position of the secondary EIA vary with the frequency detuning of coupled field, and the intensity of the absorption peaks decrease with the increasing detuning.

Perturbing an electromagnetically induced transparency in a Λ system using a low-frequency driving field. I. Three-level system

Eric Wilson, Neil B. Manson, C. Wei +1 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance in a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ configuration is obtained when the frequencies of two fields are close to resonance with two of the transitions and their frequency difference matches the frequency of the third transition. In this situation the spectrum of one swept field as a probe gives a simple transparency feature. However, when an additional field drives the third transition the EIT feature associated with the probe is split. This perturbed EIT is illustrated for both single and bichromatic driving fields. In the single-driving-field case a density matrix treatment is shown to be in reasonable agreement with experiment, and in both single and bichromatic cases the structure in the spectrum can be explained using the dressed-state formalism. The dressed states can also be used to account for subharmonic resonances observed in the strong-probe regime.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in the four-level system driven by bichromatic microwave field

Lijun Yang, Ke-jia Sun, Su-Heng Zhang +1 more

We present a theoretical study on the nonlinear behaviors of the electromagnetically induced transparency resonance subject to two microwave driving fields in a four-level atom system. The probe absorption spectrum is obtained by solving numerically the relevant equations of density matrix. It is shown that there are two pairs of the EIT windows in the probe absorption spectrum. The two pairs of EIT windows have symmetry with respect to the resonance frequency of the probe field, and the separation is equal to the Rabi frequency of the resonant microwave driving field. But in each pair, the splitting of two EIT windows is dominated to the strength of detuning microwave driving field.

Quantum coherence in Λ-three-level system driven by bichromatic coupling field

Yang Li-Jun, Zhao Min, Lianshui Zhang +3 more

We present a theoretical study of quantum coherent effects in a Λ-three-level system with a strong bichromatic coupling field and a weak probe field. When one component of the strong bichromatic coupling field is resonant with a corresponding transition and the other is detuning with an integer fraction of the Rabi frequency of the resonant field, the absorption spectrum exhibits a series of symmetrical doublets. While two frequencies of the strong bichromatic coupling field are symmetrically detuned from the transition, the position and the relative intensity of the absorption peak are both affected by the coupling field intensity and detuning. An explanation of the spectrum is given in term of the dressed-state formalism.

Quantum interference effects on the probe amplification without and with inversion in a four-level system

Bing Zhang, Weihua Xu, Zhang Hui-Fang +1 more

A four-level system driven by two coherent fields is considered. It is shown that in the presence of an incoherent pump, the probe gain at a short wavelength can be achieved due to the quantum interference. Our density matrix calculation provides the conditions for probe amplification from different origins, including gain without population inversion on any state basis, gain with population inversion on the dressed-state basis and gain with population inversion on the bare-state basis. Also, by controlling the Rabi frequency of the coupling field a total change from non-inversion to inversion can be achieved which does not depend on the intensity of the incoherent pump.

The switch between electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption due to the power broadening of probing field

Xiaoli Li, Chao He, Jianfei Zhang

In this paper we present a theoretical study of the nonlinear effect in the quasi-lambda type four-level system. The system consists of an excited state level and three ground state hyperfine levels. Probing and coupling field are coupled to between the excited state and two higher ground states, and the microwave field drives the two lower ground states which are associated with probing field. By solving the precision solutions of the equations of motion of density matrix, the absorption properties as a function of Rabi frequencies of the probing field and microwave field are given. As a result, the switch from double EIT to single EIA is found due to the power broadening of probing field. However, the splitting frequency of double EIT has some connection with the Rabi frequency of microwave field.
