Abstract

Existence of localized states of lD NLS equation with quintic nonlinearity and optical lattices is investigated. Optical lattices prevent collapse in attractive case and lead to existence of bright soliton for the repulsive case.

Gap-Townes solitons and localized excitations in low-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

F. Kh. Abdullaev, Mario Salerno

We discuss localized ground states of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC's) in optical lattices with attractive and repulsive three-body interactions in the framework of a quintic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation which extends the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to the one-dimensional case. We use both a variational method and a self-consistent approach to show the existence of unstable localized excitations which are similar to Townes solitons of the cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in two dimensions. These solutions are shown to be located in the forbidden zones of the band structure, very close to the band edges, separating decaying states from stable localized ones (gap solitons) fully characterizing their delocalizing transition. In this context the usual gap solitons appear as a mechanism for arresting the collapse in low-dimensional BEC's in optical lattices with an attractive real three-body interaction. The influence of the imaginary part of the three-body interaction, leading to dissipative effects in gap solitons, and the effect of atoms feeding from the thermal cloud are also discussed. These results may be of interest for both BEC's in atomic chips and Tonks-Girardeau gas in optical lattices.

Localized modes of binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates in nonlinear optical lattices

F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Gammal, Mario Salerno +1 more

The properties of the localized states of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a nonlinear periodic potential (nonlinear optical lattice) are investigated. We discuss the existence of different types of solitons and study their stability by means of analytical and numerical approaches. The symmetry properties of the localized states with respect to nonlinear optical lattices are also investigated. We show that nonlinear optical lattices allow the existence of bright soliton modes with equal symmetry in both components and bright localized modes of mixed symmetry type, as well as dark-bright bound states and bright modes on periodic backgrounds. In spite of the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the problem, the fundamental symmetric localized modes undergo a delocalizing transition when the strength of the nonlinear optical lattice is varied. This transition is associated with the existence of an unstable solution, which exhibits a shrinking (decaying) behavior for slightly overcritical (undercritical) variations in the number of atoms.

Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices: Band-gap structure and solitons

Pearl J. Y. Louis, Elena A. Ostrovskaya, Craig M. Savage +1 more

We analyze the existence and stability of spatially extended (Bloch-type) and localized states of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into an optical lattice. In the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a periodic potential, we study the band-gap structure of the matter-wave spectrum in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. We demonstrate the existence of families of spatially localized matter-wave gap solitons, and analyze their stability in different band gaps, for both repulsive and attractive atomic interactions.

Bose–Einstein condensate in a bichromatic optical lattice: an exact analytical model

Ajay Nath, Utpal Roy

We provide an exact analytical model for the dynamics of a 1D Bose–Einstein condensate loaded in a bichromatic optical lattice. Although a host of exact solutions result from this novel method, we mainly concentrate on the solitonic excitations. The trapping potential and its depth of lattice frustration can be varied by tuning the power and the wavelengths of the two overlaying laser beams. Both attractive and repulsive regimes are thoroughly investigated. In the attractive domain, we obtain bright soliton, which reveals interesting variations with the depth of lattice frustration. Localization of the matter wave density is demonstrated as one of the applications in this regime. In the repulsive domain, dark soliton is obtained when the potential resembles an optical lattice. With appropriate tuning of the potential parameter, the dark soliton becomes modulated with an oscillatory background and gradually transforms to bright solitary trains.

Discrete breathers in BEC with two- and three-body interactions in optical lattice

F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Bouketir, Azeddine Messikh +1 more

We investigate the properties of discrete breathers in a Bose-Einstein condensate with two- and three-body interactions in optical lattice. In the tight-binding approximation the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with periodic potential for the condensate wavefunction is reduced to the cubic-quintic discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We analyze the regions of modulational instabilities of nonlinear plane waves. This result is important to obtain the conditions for generation of discrete solitons(breathers) in optical lattice. Also using the Page approach, we derive the conditions for the existence and stability for bright discrete breather solutions. It is shown that the quintic nonlinearity brings qualitatively new conditions for stability of strongly localized modes. The numerical simulations conform with the analytical predictions.

Two-dimensional bright and dark-in-bright dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate solitons on a one-dimensional optical lattice

S K Adhikari

Abstract We study the statics and dynamics of anisotropic, stable, bright and dark-in-bright dipolar quasi-two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) solitons on a one-dimensional (1D) optical-lattice (OL) potential. These solitons mobile in a plane perpendicular to a 1D OL trap can have both repulsive and attractive contact interactions. Dark-in-bright solitons are the excited states of bright solitons. The solitons, when subjected to a small perturbation, exhibit sustained breathing oscillation. Dark-in-bright solitons can be created by phase imprinting a bright soliton. At medium velocities the collision between two solitons is found to be quasi-elastic. Results are demonstrated by a numerical simulation of the three-dimensional mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation in three spatial dimensions employing realistic interaction parameters for a dipolar 164 Dy BEC.
