Abstract

We present a high-speed polarization-coding method, which makes use of phase modulation, for use in a quantum key distribution (QKD) system. This technique has been introduced into a QKD system for the first time. A completely quantum mechanical method is employed to describe quantum information processing here. Experiments on a balanced element for polarization coding by phase modulation are described in detail. The experimental results demonstrate that this technique can encode or decode polarization at high speed (with feasibility in the GHz range) and low voltage (a few volts) successfully.

High-speed robust polarization modulation for quantum key distribution

Yang Li, Yu-Huai Li, Hongbo Xie +7 more

Polarization modulation plays a key role in polarization-encoding quantum key distribution (QKD). Here, we report a new, to the best of our knowledge, polarization modulation scheme based on an inherently stable Sagnac interferometer. The presented scheme is free of polarization mode dispersion and calibration as well as insensitive to environmental influences. Successful experiments at a repetition frequency of 1.25 GHz have been conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and stability of the scheme. The measured average quantum bit-error rate of the four polarization states is as low as 0.27% for 80 consecutive minutes without any adjustment. This high-speed intrinsically stable polarization modulation can be widely applied to many polarization-encoding QKD systems, such as BB84, MDI, etc.

Experimental quantum key distribution with active phase randomization

Yi Zhao, Bing Qi, Hoi-Kwong Lo

Phase randomization is an important assumption made in many security proofs of practical quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. Here, the authors present the first experimental demonstration of QKD with reliable active phase randomization. One key contribution is a polarization-insensitive phase modulator, which they added to a commercial phase-coding QKD system to randomize the global phase of each bit. They also proposed a useful method to verify the phase randomization experimentally. Their result shows very low quantum bit error rate (<1%). They expect this active phase randomization process to be a standard part in future QKD setups due to its significance and feasibility.

Development of a high-speed polarisation-based quantum key distribution transmitter

Haofan Duan

Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables remote users to establish secret keys secured by quantum mechanics. Polarisation encoding offers simple state preparation and measurement; however, fibre birefringence, component imperfections, and high-speed polarisation modulation make stable, low-error operation challenging. This thesis investigates the development of a high-speed polarisation-based QKD transmitter. The optical components, including intensity and phase modulators, interferometric systems, and electronic polarisation controllers (EPCs), are characterised experimentally. Gradient descent, coordinate gradient descent, and simulated annealing are compared for EPC-based state preparation. With a 50 mV step, coordinate gradient descent is approximately six times faster than conventional gradient descent, while simulated annealing achieves 100% success over the tested runs at the selected settings. The polarisation-control approach is evaluated in a proof-of-concept BB84 feasibility experiment over a deployed 224 km undersea fibre link between the United Kingdom and Ireland, with a measured attenuation of 38.6 dB. Channel loss and polarisation stability are characterised, and the QBER is measured using SPAD and SNSPD detector configurations. At a mean photon number of one, the SNSPD configuration produces average QBERs of 2.98% and 1.55% for the horizontal and vertical states, respectively, substantially below the corresponding SPAD results. Separately, a field-trial-informed asymptotic decoy-state model projects a maximum secret-key yield of 2.93*10^-6 bit/clock. Finally, several iterations of high-speed polarisation-encoders are developed and assessed, identifying extraction efficiency and fibre-axis alignment as key practical constraints. The resulting hybrid encoder prepares four polarisation states at 40 MHz, with measured overall system QBERs below 3%. Overall, the work establishes practical methods for polarisation control, long-distance feasibility assessment, and stable high-speed state preparation in polarisation-based QKD systems.

Study on Sending after Verify Scheme in Quantum Channel for Quantum Key Distribution System Based on Polarization Coding

Yadong Wei

A new sending after verify scheme, which was employed to solve the polarization fluctuation in quantum channel for QKD implementation based on polarization coding, was proposed in this paper.According this scheme,an optical phase shifter driven by voltage was developed.By altering the input voltage of phase modulator, the optical phase shifter can produce arbitrary polarization states. With the optical phase shifter and a half-wave plate, the polarization states of a QKD system can be resumed to Alice's original state discretionarily at Bob,it confirm the quantum channel is usable for QKD.The feasibility of the kernel part of the sending after verifying scheme in quantum channel for quantum key distribution system was validated in theory and practice.Because of the high modulation speed(GHz) in waveguide phase-modulators,the new scheme can help settling the polarization fluctuation in fiber-based QKD systems.

Songhao Liu

The quantum key distribution is discribed using fast polarization coding with polarization mod- ulator and one laser. At the same time, the way of matrix analysis is used to study the process of the system. The results indicate that it is feasible to code and decode four non-orthogonal polarization states with phase-polarization modulator. The experiment of secret communication is successfully carried out based on 30 km fiber. The error rate is less than 6%.

A polarization quantum key distribution scheme based on phase matching

Gao Feifei, Li Zhihui, Liu Chengji +1 more

Abstract The Quantum Key Distribution protocol can encode a single quantum state and implements an information-theoretically secure key distribution protocol in communication. In the actual QKD experimental system, there are usually two encoding methods which are phase encoding and polarization encoding. Ma et al (Phase-Matching Quantum Key Distribution, Phys. Rev. X., 2018, 83) proposed the phase-matching QKD protocol, which has high transmission and it is an extension of the measurement device independent QKD. This paper successfully gives the polarization scheme of this PM-QKD protocol, the bases in the polarization scheme are arbitrary, and eliminates detector side channel attacks. Furthermore, we give the security analysis and simulation results of the polarization scheme, and compare it with the BB84 protocol. The simulation results show that our protocol is superior to the BB84 protocol in terms of transmission distance under the fixed key rate.
