A Multiquantum-Dot-Doped Fiber Amplifier With Characteristics of Broadband, Flat Gain, and Low Noise

Abstract

Doped with PbSe nanocrystals of different sizes, a multiquantum-dot-doped fiber amplifier (MQDFA) is proposed. Performance of the MQDFA is simulated by solving light-propagation equations and rate equations for a three-level system, and by applying superposed emission-absorption cross sections of the quantum dots (QDs). Pumped with 980 nm, this proposed MQDFA has characteristics of broader band, flatter gain, and lower noise than those of the erbium-doped fiber amplifiers at present. There is evidence to show that two factors, i.e., the equivalent Stokes shifts and the full wave at half maximum of the superposed spectra, dominate the performances of the MQDFA. Also, the equivalent Stokes shift and the FWHM are tunable by adopting the QDs in different sizes and choosing the doped number available. It is expected that such a MQDFA may be able to cover the all waveband in telecommunications if it is optimized on the doped number, sizes, and doped concentrations of the QDs.

A semiconductor nanocrystal PbSe quantum dot fiber amplifier

Cheng Cheng, Zhang Hang, 浙江工业大学应用物理系,杭州 310023

A novel kind of fiber amplifier——quantum dot doped fiber amplifier (QDFA) is presented. Using semiconductor nanocrystal PbSe as a dopant, the gain bandwidths of the PbSe-QDFA are simulated by solving the rate equation and the light propagation equation in a two-level system, applying a genetic algorithm combined with an “inversing method”. Comparing with conventional erbium-doped fiber amplifiers available, there is evidence to show that characteristics of the PbSe-QDFA are obviously advantageous in respect of bandwidth and noise, especially on long-waelength band. Furthermore, the ideal emission-absorption cross-sections of the quantum dot are determined by utilizing the genetic algorithm. Under such ideal cross-sections, the QDFA possesses with the performance of ultra-bandwidth and low noise figure near a quantum limit.

Modeling a Broadband Bismuth-Doped Fiber Amplifier

Chun Jiang

In this paper, we present the energy level, transition configuration, and numerical model of a bismuth-doped fiber amplifier for the first time, to the best of authorspsila knowledge. With a three-level system, the rate and power propagation equations of the model are solved to examine the effect of the fiber parameter and pump power on the bandwidth of the gain spectra. It can be predicted that when excited at wavelength in the 800-900 nm range, the amplifier can have a ultrabroad gain spectra in the 1.2-1.62 mum range, which cover the low-loss windows of the all-wave fiber.

The Gain Characteristics and the Optimum Fiber Length of Erbium-doped Fiber Amplifiers

Huang De, Li Zai

An apporoximative theoretical of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) has been proposed in this paper by the rate equation of three-level system. The optimum fiber length is obtained with different pump wavelength by considering the excited-stated-absorption(ESA) in EDFA. The relations between the gain and signal light intensity and pump light intensity are analyzed. It is found that the gain spectrum shape can be changed with the fiber length, which provides the evidence that EDFA is of great potential use in wavelength division multiplexed telecommunication systems.

Rare-earth doped fiber amplifiers for the first telecommunication window

Balakrishnan Sridhar

A complete experimental and theoretical study of rare earth doped fiber-optic amplifiers for the first tele-communication window has been made. The thulium doped fluoride fiber amplifier is shown to provide amplification in the 800nm-820nm signal region. A complete steady state theoretical model has been presented and the model has been experimentally verified. The model predicts the gain, noise figure and the amplified spontaneous emission in the 800nm, 1470nm, 1900nm and 2300nm bands. The effect of population trapping at the $\\sp3F\\sb4$ energy level of thulium ion is also shown with the help of the model. It has been shown that about 5-15%o of the population is trapped at the $\\sp3F\\sb4$ energy level. We have also shown theoretically, the expected gain and noise performance of Thulium doped fluoride fiber amplifiers pumped in the 680nm absorption band. The maximum gain at 806nm is slightly lower than with comparable 780 nm pumping. The gain bandwidth is however found to increase with 680nm pumping. The higher ASE at shorter wavelengths ($<$806nm) reduces the gain at the peak wavelength (806nm). This is a result of the better inversion with three level pumping at 680nm as compared to two level resonant pumping at 780nm. We report an efficient single mode erbium doped flouride fiber amplifier in the 850nm signal band for the first time. The amplification is through an up-conversion process. The erbium doped flouride fiber amplifier was pumped with an estimated pump power of 35mW at 792nm. We have also considered a theoretical model for a single mode erbium doped fluoride fiber amplifier. Efficient amplification occurs because of the strong excited state absorption at the pump wavelength from the $\\sp4I\\sb{13/2}$ energy level.

Analysis of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers pumped at 800 nm

Frands B. Pedersen, Stanley A. Zemon, William J. Miniscalco

The performance and efficiency of erbium-doped fibers pumped in the 800-nm band has been analyzed using a quantitative amplifier model. Both a silica and a fluorophosphate host were investigated. The analysis showed that under optimized conditions the fluorophosphate is superior to the silica with higher gain and up to 60 % higher quantum conversion efficiency. Only with respect to noise figure is the fluorophosphate poorer, because of the shorter lifetime of the metastable state.
