Influence of the Stark effect on the nature of stimulated Raman scattering of ultrashort adiabatic pump radiation

Abstract

An investigation is made of the serious limitations on the growth of the amplitude of a Stokes wave associated with the optical Stark effect and with the dispersion of the group velocities of the interacting pulses. It is shown that when the distance traversed exceeds a certain length, the gain due to stimulated Raman scattering reaches saturation whereas the spectrum of the scattered light becomes broader and acquires a line structure. Saturation of the scattering is not manifested at pump intensities sufficient to bleach the scattering medium. The gain can be optimized by altering the offset from a resonance.

Stark effect in pulsed stimulated Raman scattering

Б. В. Крыжановский, A. O. Melikyan

A study is made of the problem of stimulated Raman scattering (STRS) in a resonant medium pumped by a strong pulse satisfying the adiabaticity condition. It is shown that in the absence of relaxation the maximum STRS gain is reached during the tail (trailing edge) of the pump pulse, which is the reason for the absence of the Stark shift. If the pump pulse is considerably longer than the relaxation time, the lag of the STRS pulse behind the pump pulse is short and then the Stark shift is manifested in the spectrum and a characteristic interference structure is formed. Noise and monochromatic "seeding" variants are considered.

Optical Stark effect in the stimulated Raman scattering in gases

Yu A Il'inskiĭ, Vladimir D Taranukhin

A theoretical investigation is made of the Stark structure of the stimulated Raman scattering lines of a gas, which appears in the field of high-power pump radiation. The cases of different polarizations of the pump and Stokes waves are considered. Allowance for the nuclear contribution to the Stark shifts is made. It is shown that the Stark effect should be observed at pump radiation intensities which can be achieved using currently available lasers.

Correlation between Stokes and anti-Stokes radiation and the effect of phase modulation in stimulated Raman scattering of ultrashort pulses in a dispersive medium

Joachım Herrmann

A calculation is made of the intensity of the Stokes radiation in the stimulated Raman scattering of ultrashort light pulses in a dispersive medium employing the asymptotic approximation for arbitrary modulation of the amplitude and phase of the pump pulse. Particular attention was paid to the effect of phase modulation on the stimulated Raman scattering. Calculations were also made of the intensity of the anti-Stokes component in the scattering of an ultrashort pulse in a dispersive medium and of the optimal angle for the observation of the anti-Stokes rings.

Influence of the spectral width and statistics of a Stokes signal on the efficiency of stimulated Raman scattering of nonmonochromatic pump radiation

G. P. Dzhotyan, Yu E D'yakov, Iosif G. Zubarev +2 more

A theoretical and experimental investigation was made of the amplification of a Stokes signal in a multimode pump field when the ratio of the spectral widths of the interacting fields was varied. In the pump intensity range I p < I cr ( I cr was a critical intensity) the gain increment was considerably less than the static value and it was governed entirely by the spectral distributions of the pump and Stokes signal. In the range I p > I cr the gain increment tended to the static value. An anomalous scatter of the Raman amplifier gain was observed experimentally for Δ ν s ≈Δ ν p ≫Δ ν l (Δ ν s ,Δ ν p , and Δ ν l were the line widths of the Stokes signal, pump, and spontaneous stimulated Raman scattering). A theory developed for the purpose indicated that the scatter was observed because the phase relationships between the interacting waves at the input into the medium varied from one measurement to another.

Theory of stimulated Raman scattering in a dispersive medium

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, E M Zemskov, V. K. Orlov

An analysis is made of the laws governing amplification of the Stokes wave in stimulated Raman scattering (STRS) in a dispersive medium for different models of wide-band pump radiation. An accurate solution of the STRS equations is obtained for pump radiation having a quadratically time-modulated phase. It is shown that for pump radiation for which the width of the instantaneous frequency spectrum is much less than the Raman scattering line width, the laws governing amplification of the Stokes wave differ substantially from those predicted by statistical STRS theory. Solutions of STRS equations in a dispersive medium are found for a model of temporally periodic pump radiation having a high intermode beat frequency.

Saturation effects in transient stimulated Raman scattering

J N Elgin, T.B. O'Hare

The evolution of the Stokes pulse generated by transient stimulated Raman scattering is considered for the case of ultrashort incident pulses. A model is proposed which allows for the effects of either depletion of the laser pump pulse or saturation of the non-linear medium.
