Abstract

This is the first reported demonstration of cw wavefront conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing in a solid. Conversion efficiencies of 3% for conjugate-wave generation were obtained in a ruby crystal using a cw argon-ion laser.

Phase-modulated conjugate-wave generation in ruby

Hirsch I. Mandelberg

Phase-modulation experiments have been performed in a degenerate four-wave mixing geometry in ruby at modulation rates faster than the relaxation rate of the ruby. The dc value of the conjugate-wave signal is measured as a function of modulation amplitude and type; the results are explainable in terms of a blurred-hologram analogy. The time-dependent behavior of the conjugate-wave signal shows frequency doubling, which is also explained in terms of a real-time hologram model.

Effects of atomic motion on wavefront conjugation by resonantly enhanced degenerate four-wave mixing

Stephen M. Wandzura

In current experiments studying cw optical-wavefront conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing, the effects of atomic motion are not negligible. I summarize a calculation, which includes such effects from the beginning, of the small-signal phase-conjugate-reflection coefficient for both Doppler-broadened and homogeneously broadened resonant transitions.

Phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing has been performed with a cw UV source on the Mg I resonance line at 285 nm ((1)S(0)-(1)P(1)(0)). Experimental observations and a comparison with a simple reflectivity model are presented.
