Nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau-type approach to quantum dissipation

Abstract

We formally derive two nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau type models starting from the Wigner-Fokker-Planck system, which rules the evolution of a quantum electron gas interacting with a heat bath in thermodynamic equilibrium. These models mainly consist of a quantum, dissipative O(Planck 3) hydrodynamic/O(Planck 4) stochastic correction to the frictional (Caldeira-Leggett-)Schrödinger equation. The main ingredient lies in the use of the hydrodynamic/stochastic fluid model approach associated with the quantum Fokker-Planck equation and the identification of the associated pressure field. Then, Madelung transformations set the problem in the Schrödinger picture of dissipative quantum mechanics. We also describe the stationary dynamics associated with both systems.

On the derivation and mathematical analysis of some quantum–mechanical models accounting for Fokker–Planck type dissipation: Phase space, Schrödinger and hydrodynamic descriptions

José Luis López, Jesús Montejo–Gámez

This paper is intended to provide the reader with a review of the authors’ latest results dealing with the modeling of quantum dissipation/diffusion effects at the level of Schrodinger systems, in connection with the corresponding phase space and fluid formulations of such kind of phenomena, especially in what concerns the role of the Fokker–Planck mechanism in the description of open quantum systems and the macroscopic dynamics associated with some viscous hydrodynamic models of Euler and Navier–Stokes type.

On viscous quantum hydrodynamics associated with nonlinear Schrödinger-Doebner-Goldin models

José Luis López, ,Departamento de Matemática Aplicada, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad de Granada, 18071 Granada, Jesús Montejo-Gámez

The aim of this paper is to derive the quantum hydrodynamic system associated with the most general class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations accounting for Fokker--Planck type diffusion of the probability density, called of Doebner--Goldin. This 'Doebner--Goldin hydrodynamic system' is shown to be reduced in most cases to a simpler one of quantum Euler type by means of the introduction of a nonlinear gauge transformation that changes the fluid mean velocity into a new effective velocity corrected by an osmotic contribution. Finally, we also discuss some particular situations of especial interest and compare the structure of the resulting fluid systems with that of the viscous quantum hydrodynamic and the quantum Navier--Stokes equations stemming from maximization of the quantum entropy for Wigner--BGK models.

A wavefunction description of quantum Fokker–Planck dissipation: derivation and numerical approximation of transient dynamics

Pilar Guerrero, José Luis López, Jesús Montejo–Gámez

A nonlinear Schrodinger equation describing how a quantum particle interacts with its surrounding reservoir is derived from the Wigner–Fokker–Planck equation (WFPE) via stochastic (Nelsonian) mechanical techniques. This model can be reduced just to a logarithmic Schrodinger equation through a suitable gauge transformation that allows one to explore its steady state dynamics and makes its mathematical and numerical analysis more tractable. The transient behavior of the standard deviation from the mean position associated with its solutions is also studied numerically and compared with that stemming from the WFPE.

An Application of the Madelung Formalism for Dissipating and Decaying Systems

Maedeh Mollai, Seyed Majid Saberi Fathi

This paper is concerned with the modeling and analysis of quantum dissipation and diffusion phenomena in the Schrödinger picture. We derive and investigate in detail the Schrödinger-type equations accounting for dissipation and diffusion effects. From a mathematical viewpoint, this equation allows one to achieve and analyze all aspects of the quantum dissipative systems, regarding the wave equation, Hamilton–Jacobi and continuity equations. This simplification requires the performance of “the Madelung decomposition” of “the wave function”, which is rigorously attained under the general Lagrangian justification for this modification of quantum mechanics. It is proved that most of the important equations of dissipative quantum physics, such as convection-diffusion, Fokker–Planck and quantum Boltzmann, have a common origin and can be unified in one equation.

Nonlinear Friction in Quantum Mechanics

Roumen Tsekov

Nonlinear friction forces are a problem in classical Brownian motion for a long time [1]. They are described either by Langevin or by Fokker-Planck equations [2-4]. However, the rigorous generalized Langevin equation is linear, which points out that nonlinear friction forces possess a macroscopic hydrodynamic origin [1]. For this reason, they are not present in the modern quantum theory of open systems [5]. The scope of the present paper is to investigate the nonlinear friction effect on quantum mechanics. The analysis is based on a dissipative Madelung quantum hydrodynamics. Thus, the nonlinear friction is a result of nonlinear non-equilibrium thermodynamics in contrast to the traditional mechanical nonlinear friction forces. Quantum Fokker-Planck-Kramers equation and entropy production

Mário J. de Oliveira

We use a canonical quantization procedure to set up a quantum Fokker-Planck-Kramers equation that accounts for quantum dissipation in a thermal environment. The dissipation term is chosen to ensure that the thermodynamic equilibrium is described by the Gibbs state. An expression for the quantum entropy production that properly describes quantum systems in a nonequilibrium stationary state is also provided. The time-dependent solution is given for a quantum harmonic oscillator in contact with a heat bath. We also obtain the stationary solution for a system of two coupled harmonic oscillators in contact with reservoirs at distinct temperatures, from which we obtain the entropy production and the quantum thermal conductance.
