Possibility of determination of the relaxation characteristics of atomic levels and transitions by nonlinear spectroscopy in a strong magnetic field

Abstract

The gain experienced by a weak electromagnetic wave traveling in the opposite direction to a strong wave through a gaseous medium subjected to a sufficiently strong magnetic field is calculated for any values of the angular momenta of dipole transition levels allowing for atomic depolarizing collisions. It is shown that information on all the relaxation characteristics of an atomic transition and on the levels participating in this transition can be obtained using the model of depolarizing collisions.

Change in the parameters of a light wave during propagation through a resonant gaseous medium in a magnetic field

А. Ч. Измайлов

A theoretical analysis is made of the resonant interaction between a traveling monochromatic light wave of arbitrary intensity and polarization and the 1/21/2 and 10 transitions in gas atoms in a magnetic field. An analysis is made of the influence of atomic collisions and coherence of the Zeeman sublevels of the terms on the structure of nonlinear magnetooptic resonances in the amplitude and polarization characteristics of the wave. Some features of nonlinear magnetooptic resonances for laser excitation of atoms from the ground state are noted. A study is made of the Faraday rotation and self-rotation of the polarization ellipse of the radiation as a function of the detuning of the wave frequency, the saturation parameter, and the optical density of the gas. The stability of the polarization of light in the medium is discussed. It is noted that these laws may be used to analyze and control the radiation characteristics of lasers and amplifiers when the level of saturation of a resonant gaseous medium in a magnetic field is high.

Resonances of electromagnetic-induced transparency and electromagnetic-induced absorption at the transition with level momenta J=1/2 in unidirectional wave spectroscopy

Э. Г. Сапрыкин, А. А. Черненко

Abstract The physical processes that form the saturated absorption resonance spectra on the atomic transition with level momenta J= 1/2 in the field of unidirectional waves of arbitrary intensities are investigated both analytically and numerically. It is shown that the narrow structures of the nonlinear resonance spectra (resonances of electromagnetic-induced transparency and absorption) and the processes forming them are determined by the direction of the light wave polarizations, degree of openness of the atomic transition, and the saturating wave intensity. The conditions under which the nonlinear resonance is exclusively coherent, due to the magnetic coherence of transition levels, are revealed.

Spectrum of absorption of a weak signal by an atom in a strong field

D. S. Bakaev, Yu. A. Vdovin, V. M. Ermachenko +1 more

An analysis is made of the spectrum of absorption of a weak probe electromagnetic by two-level atoms in a strong resonant laser field, undergoing collision with buffer gas atoms. The analysis is made using an approach that allows for the direct influence of a strong electromagnetic on the dynamics of an elastic collision between an active atom and a buffer gas atom. Rate equations are analyzed for a combined atom–strong electromagnetic field system (an atom dressed by the field) allowing for spontaneous and optical collisional transitions, and also for the interaction with the probe field. In the steady-state case, an expression is derived for the electric susceptibility of the medium at the small-signal frequency. This expression contains the rates of the optical collisional transitions that depend nontrivially on the parameters of the strong electromagnetic field. The phenomenological characteristics of optical collisional transitions generally used are only valid at low intensities and for small frequency detunings of the strong electromagnetic field, i.e., in the impact limit.

Non-stationary Two-photon Doppler-free Coherent Spectroscopy in an Atomic Gas in the Presence of Depolarizing Collisions

A. I. Alekseev, V. N. Beloborodov

Non-stationary two-photon absorption coherent spectroscopy free of Doppler broadening in an atomic gas has been considered in detail. Correct account has been taken of the level degeneracy and depolarizing collisions. This two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy has been developed for determining the relaxation rates of the atomic multipole moments in gas. A criterion to test the adopted model of the depolarizing collisions has been developed. A possible method for the identification of the atomic transitions in the angular momentum has been formulated. A technique of precisely determining the separation between the energy levels of the two-photon transition has been proposed. The conditions under which the Stokes wave is conjugated with respect to the probe pulse in amplitude, phase and polarization have been determined for the atomic gas in the presence of depolarizing collisions.

Measurement of Dipole-Moment in Atomic Transitions under Strong External Magnetic Field

Koichi Nittoh, Akira Kuwako, Tadashi Ikehara +4 more

Obtaining an accurate value of the electric dipole moment μ is essential in the fields of laser application technologies. A direct way of measuring the electric dipole moment μ is to observe the Rabi-oscillation which manifests itself in the coherent photo-excitation behavior of atoms. In the case of the elements which have large angular momenta, identifying the Rabi-oscillation in their excitation behavior becomes rather difficult. We proposed an accurate and straightforward method of determining the electric-dipole moment μ between multifold degenerate levels. The point is to remove the degeneracy by applying an external magnetic field with the aid of the Zeeman effect and, then, to realize a degeneration free coherent excitation. As a result, we can observe the Rabi-oscillations explicitly in the excitation vs. laser-fluence curves. The present method provides a reliable basis of experimental determination of μ. As an example, we applied the present method to a transition to 0–17,362 cm−1 level in uranium and obtained the value μ=0.86±0.06 (Debye).

Probe-field spectroscopy in two-level systems with low Doppler broadening

А. И. Пархоменко, Anatolii M. Shalagin

The spectrum of absorption (amplification) of a weak probe field by two-level atoms colliding with atoms of a buffer gas in the field of a strong electromagnetic wave is studied theoretically. A universal, free of any collision model, solution is obtained for systems with small (compared to collision rates) Doppler broadening with no restrictions on the strong-field intensity and with the possible absence of dephasing of the light-induced dipole moment in elastic collisions of the gas particles. The relation of the collisional parameters of the problem with the characteristics of an elementary scattering event and with the macroscopic characteristics connected with the transport phenomena is established. It is found that the nontrivial features of the probe-field spectrum discovered by us previously [Zh. Éksp. Teor. Fiz. 127 , 320 (2005)] in the framework of the strong-collision model are not connected with a particular model of collisions and have a universal nature.
