Abstract

A theoretical analysis is made of the resonant interaction between a traveling monochromatic light wave of arbitrary intensity and polarization and the 1/21/2 and 10 transitions in gas atoms in a magnetic field. An analysis is made of the influence of atomic collisions and coherence of the Zeeman sublevels of the terms on the structure of nonlinear magnetooptic resonances in the amplitude and polarization characteristics of the wave. Some features of nonlinear magnetooptic resonances for laser excitation of atoms from the ground state are noted. A study is made of the Faraday rotation and self-rotation of the polarization ellipse of the radiation as a function of the detuning of the wave frequency, the saturation parameter, and the optical density of the gas. The stability of the polarization of light in the medium is discussed. It is noted that these laws may be used to analyze and control the radiation characteristics of lasers and amplifiers when the level of saturation of a resonant gaseous medium in a magnetic field is high.

Nonlinear Faraday effect in resonant media

B. Glushko, V. O. Chaltykyan

A theoretical analysis is made of the nonlinear (in respect of the radiation intensity) rotation of the plane of polarization occuring in an atomic medium subjected to a static magnetic field near one-photon (two-level atoms) and two-photon (three-level atoms) resonances. A study is also made of the influence of a strong monochromatic pump wave on the propagation of a weak nonmonochromatic wave. The wave functions and quasienergies are calculated for a three-level system in static magnetic and monochromatic electromagnetic fields near a two-photon resonance. It is shown that the Verdet constant and the refractive index of such a system depend on the magnitude and relative sign of the frequency detuning from resonance. Proximity to a two-photon resonance destroys the polarizability of a medium for either sign of the detuning.

Magnetic field and pressure effects in a saturated gas laser amplifier

Robert T. Menzies

Theoretical and experimental studies of a gas laser amplifier are presented, assuming the amplifier is operating with a saturating optical frequency signal. The analysis is primarily concerned with the effects of the gas pressure and the presence of an axial magnetic field on the characteristics of the amplifying medium. Semiclassical radiation theory is used, along with a density matrix description of the atomic medium which relates the motion of single atoms to the macroscopic observables. A two-level description of the atom, using phenomenological source rates and decay rates, forms the basis of our analysis of the gas laser medium. Pressure effects are taken into account to a large extent through suitable choices of decay rate parameters. Two methods for calculating the induced polarization of the atomic medium are used. The first method utilizes a perturbation expansion which is valid for signal intensities which barely reach saturation strength, and it is quite general in applicability. The second method is valid for arbitrarily strong signals, but it yields tractable solutions only for zero magnetic field or for axial magnetic fields large enough such that the Zeeman splitting is much larger than the power broadened homogeneous linewidth of the laser transition. The effects of pressure broadening of the homogeneous spectral linewidth are included in both the weak-signal and strong-signal theories; however the effects of Zeeman sublevel-mixing collisions are taken into account only in the weak-signal theory. The behavior of a He-Ne gas laser amplifier in the presence of an axial magnetic field has been studied experimentally by measuring gain and Faraday rotation of linearly polarized resonant laser signals for various values of input signal intensity, and by measuring nonlinearity - induced anisotropy for elliptically polarized resonant laser signals of various input intensities. Two high-gain transitions in the 3.39-μ region were used for study: a J = 1 to J = 2 (3s2 → 3p4) transition and a J = 1 to J = 1 (3s2 → 3p2) transition. The input signals were tuned to the centers of their respective resonant gain lines. The experimental results agree quite well with corresponding theoretical expressions which have been developed to include the nonlinear effects of saturation strength signals. The experimental results clearly show saturation of Faraday rotation, and for the J = 1 t o J = 1 transition a Faraday rotation reversal and a traveling wave gain dip are seen for small values of axial magnetic field. The nonlinearity induced anisotropy shows a marked dependence on the gas pressure in the amplifier tube for the J = 1 to J = 2 transition; this dependence agrees with the predictions of the general perturbational or weak signal theory when allowances are made for the effects of Zeeman sublevel-mixing collisions. The results provide a method for measuring the upper (neon 3s2) level quadrupole moment decay rate, the dipole moment decay rates for the 3s2 → 3p4 and 3s2 → 3p2 transitions, and the effects of various types of collision processes on these decay rates.

New nonlinear polarization effects for frequency selection

T. Ya. Karagodova, Alexander I. Karagodov

The method of computer simulations on nonlinear resonant magnetooptical effects developed for real multi-level atoms in the two laser fields of arbitrary intensity and external magnetic field is applied for the polarization effects of different types calculations and investigations of the dependence of the characteristics of these effects on magnetic field strength, intensities, polarization and detunings of laser fields for alkaline atoms. The essence of the method consists in simulations and analysis of the plots of dependence of quasi energies on parameters, which are obtained with the help of sorting subprogram, and selection of suitable algorithms for calculations of characteristics of nonlinear resonant magnetooptical effects. One photon and two photon resonant effects are investigated for wide range of magnetic field strength from Zeeman to Paschen Back effects. Some new features in the spectra of rotation of plane of polarization and circular dichroism of different types are predicted. The results show the agreement with known experiments. Such calculations of nonlinear resonant magnetooptical effects in the intense laser fields resonant to adjacent transitions and magnetic field show the opportunity of investigation the modifications of electronic structure due to intense radiation fields and strong external magnetic field in atomic gases and also may be used for the treatment of new methods of phase-polarization selection of modes of tunable lasers.

NONLINEAR AND ANISOTROPIC EFFECTS IN MAGNETICALLY TUNED LASER AMPLIFIERS

A. Dienes

Using semiclassical radiation theory and a density matrix formalism we analyze the nonlinear characteristics of a gas laser amplifier operating with two optical frequency signals of arbitrary polarization and having an axial magnetic field. Both perturbational solutions, valid for relatively weak intensities and solutions valid for arbitrarily strong fields are obtained for two nonlinear effects: the saturation interaction of the electromagnetic waves, and the generation of combination tones. An arbitrary amount of Doppler broadening is considered throughout. The detailed treatment of J = 1 to J = 0 model yields the frequency, magnetic field and polarization dependence of the nonlinear effects. The results are presented analytically and graphically and are discussed using physical arguments. It is found that only saturation but no combination tone generation occurs for two opposite circularly polarized input signals while both are, in general, present for two arbitrary linearly or elliptically polarized fields. For two opposite circular waves the interaction is found to comprise three parts, each with a different behavior: self saturation, common level mutual saturation and a coherent double quantum interaction. The total interaction (coupling) between the two fields is always weak. The limiting case of a single linearly polarized field is considered separately, the zero magnetic field dip and the nonlinear behavior of the Faraday rotation is discussed. For two linearly (or elliptically) polarized waves the three nonlinear processes listed above take place between opposite circular components. In addition a modulation of the population inversion densities occurs due to the presence of two different frequencies with the same circular polarization. This results in the generation of new frequencies and also contributes to the coupling between the input fields. The coupling depends on the magnetic field, and on the frequency separation and the polarization states of the signals. The limiting case of zero magnetic field is examined. It is found that the medium is made effectively anisotropic by the nonlinear interactions. The polarization vectors of two linearly polarized fields rotate apart unless the angle between them is zero or 90 degrees. The results are extended to the general Ja to Jb transition. In zero magnetic field the nonlinear effects are found to depend on ΔJ, while for nonzero magnetic field resonances in the interaction occur whenever the frequency difference between two opposite circularly polarized transitions that have common level equals the frequency separation of the input fields. Combination tone generation takes place for all but two opposite circularly polarized signals.

Computer simulations on the processes of resonantly excited radiation in the intense laser and magnetic fields

T. Ya. Karagodova, Alexander I. Karagodov

The theory and method of computer simulations created formerly permits to investigate the interaction of high power laser radiation up to gigawatt on centimeter to the second power with the atoms as well as with small so with large fine structure interval in the external magnetic field. The modifications of the energies and populations of atomic levels due to such interaction lead to the new nonlinear effects. Among them besides the modifications in Raman effect and new effects of rotation of plane of polarization and circular dichroism investigated before there are such new effects as the modifications of the number, intensities, polarizations of the lines at the excitation spectra and the scattering spectra of resonant fluorescence. The real atom is multilevel system. Usually the theoretical investigations of nonlinear resonant magnetooptical effects are limited by two- or three-level approximations or by using the perturbation theory. This is justified for considering the effects in the weak magnetic fields but not sufficient for revealing and investigation the characteristics of the new nonlinear magnetooptical effects taking place in the intense radiation and magnetic fields. Such effects are related to modifications of electronic structure of atoms (level shifts and splittings, populations modifications). As the considered media is atomic gas one can reach for power density up to gigawatt on centimeter to the second power. As the considered concentrations are small it is possible to neglect the collisional relaxation. For real atom the considered system is multilevel so only numerical solution is appropriated. The simulations permit to find some new effects in the excitation spectra of Raman effect and resonant fluorescence.

Population dynamics of magnetic sublevels for multilevel systems in high-power laser and external magnetic fields

T. Ya. Karagodova, Anna V. Kuptsova

The interaction of high power laser radiation with the atoms in the external magnetic field leads to the new nonlinear effects due to modifications of populations of the states of the system 'atom plus field.' From one side it can be followed by new peculiarities in the effect of the coherent population trapping and from other -- the effects of the population modifications are important for explanation of regularities of nonlinear magneto-optical effects. The modification of population dynamics due to the parameters of the system -- radiation field intensities, detunings, polarizations, magnetic field strength and orientation, relaxation constants leads to the new features in polarization effects, resonant fluorescence and resonant Raman effects. The new features of the considered theory are that it is built for multilevel atoms and has not restrictions on the probe intensity compared to the pump intensity. The theory and method permit to investigate the populations modifications depending on modifications of the parameters of the system and to find the relation between population dynamics and new nonlinear resonant magneto-optical effects. The considered system consists of atomic gas of low concentration in the constant magnetic field and two monochromatic laser fields of different intensities and polarizations. Analytically the influence of magnetic field on population dynamics of three-level systems have been considered. For real multilevel atom the computer simulations show the dependence of population dynamics on relaxation constants and the differences of this dynamics for different magnetic sublevels of the excited states of the atom. The results agree with known theoretical and experimental works.
