Abstract

This paper reports that in the quantization of electromagnetic field in the dielectrics, the wave equation with regard to the Green function is analytically solved by a direct integral method for a quadratic continuous nonlinear absorptive dielectric medium. The quantization of the electromagnetic field in such a nonlinear absorptive dielectric is carried out for which the material dielectric function is assumed as a separable variable about the frequency and the space coordinate. The vacuum field fluctuations for different spatial continuous variations of dielectric function are numerically calculated, which shows that the present result is self-consistent.

Electromagnetic field quantization in absorbing dielectrics

Reza Matloob, R. Loudon, Stephen Mark Barnett +1 more

The electromagnetic field is quantized in dielectric media that show both loss and dispersion. The complex dielectric function of the medium is assumed to be a known function and the loss is modeled by Langevin forces in the forms of noise current operators. The noise current correlation function is related to the assumed dielectric function by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Field quantization is carried out for the infinite homogeneous dielectric, the semi-infinite dielectric, and the dielectric slab, where the fields in the second and third cases are restricted to propagation perpendicular to the dielectric surfaces. The forms of the vector potential operator are obtained in the different spatial regions for all three geometries, and in each case the required canonical commutation relation for the vector potential and its conjugate generalized momentum operator is verified. The spatial dependence of the vacuum field fluctuations is calculated for the two dielectric geometries that have surfaces.

Quantum Electrodynamics in a Linear Absorptive Dielectric Medium

Fardin Kheirandish, Majid Amooshahi

The electromagnetic field in a linear absorptive dielectric medium is quantized in the framework of the damped polarization model by a new minimal coupling scheme. A Hamiltonian containing a reservoir with continuous degrees of freedom is proposed. The reservoir minimally couples to the dielectric polarization and the electromagnetic field. The Langevin equation is obtained as the equation of motion of the polarization field. Finally, the equations of motion are solved for homogeneous dielectrics.

Electromagnetic-field quantization in inhomogeneous and dispersive one-dimensional systems

David J. Santos, R. Loudon

The electromagnetic field is quantized in a material whose dielectric function varies with frequency and one spatial dimension. The dielectric function is assumed to have a known form and to be real over the range of frequencies important for a particular application, for example the propagation of an optical signal. General properties of the mode functions are derived and employed in the quantization procedure. Expressions are obtained for the energy and momentum density and current operators, and these are shown to satisfy the appropriate conservation and continuity relations. The general formalism is illustrated by application to the examples of a homogeneous dielectric and two different dielectrics with a sharp interface.

Green-function approach to the radiation-field quantization for homogeneous and inhomogeneous Kramers-Kronig dielectrics

Toralf Gruner, D.‐G. Welsch

A quantization scheme for the radiation field in dispersive and absorptive linear dielectrics is developed, which applies to both bulk material and multilayer dielectric structures. Starting from the phenomenological Maxwell equations, where the properties of the dielectric are described by a permittivity consistent with the Kramers-Kronig relations, an expansion of the field operators is performed that is based on the Green function of the classical Maxwell equations and preserves the equal-time canonical field commutation relations. In particular, in frequency intervals with approximately vanishing absorption the concept of quantization through mode expansion for dispersive dielectrics is recognized. The theory further reveals that weak absorption gives rise to space-dependent mode operators that spatially evolve according to quantum Langevin equations in the space domain. To illustrate the applicability of the theory to inhomogeneous structures, the quantization of the radiation field in a dispersive and absorptive one-interface dielectric is performed. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Electromagnetic-field quantization in absorbing confined systems

Omar Di Stefano, Salvatore Savasta, R. Girlanda

We quantize the electromagnetic field in an absorbing resonant medium with translation symmetry broken along one direction. In this case the general polarization of the material system is driven by the field via a nonlocal complex susceptibility. We extend recently developed schemes for field quantization in absorbing dielectric media with local susceptibilities to dielectric systems described by a nonlocal susceptibility. Dissipation inside the medium is described by considering the coupling of polarization quanta of the system with the reservoir oscillators in the usual Langevin approach. The method is applied to the case of a semiconductor quantum well embedded in infinite barriers. Expressions for the electromagnetic-field operators are obtained in the different spatial regions and the spatial and frequency dependencies of the vacuum-field fluctuations are calculated.

Electromagnetic field quantization in nonlinear and inhomogeneous dielectrics

L.-M. Duan, Guang‐Can Guo

The electromagnetic field is quantized in nonlinear media whose dielectric functions and nonlinear susceptibilities may vary with space. Given the dielectric function and nonlinear susceptibilities, the Hamiltonian of the electromagnetic field is determined completely by this quantization method. From Heisenberg equations we prove that Maxwell's equations are satisfied for the field operators. When the nonlinearity goes to zero, this quantization method returns to the generalized canonical quantization procedure developed in Ref.[1] for linear inhomogeneous media. The general formalism is illustrated by applications to quantization of the second-order and third-order nonlinear quasi-steady-state processes.
