Abstract

Superluminal propagation of signals (wavelengths 1536 and 787 nm) in erbium-doped fibers without additional pump is demonstrated. We explain this phenomenon within the coherent population oscillations model in a medium with nonlinear negative absorption.

Pulse-width-dependent subluminal and superluminal propagation in highly doped erbium fibers

Francisco Arrieta-Yáñez, E. Cabrera, José Miguel Ezquerro +2 more

We experimentally and theoretically study the propagation of a 1536 nm light pulse superposed on a continuous wave background in a highly doped erbium fiber pumped at 977 nm. We observe a transition from subluminal to superluminal propagation with the pulse bandwidth. Furthermore, an improvement of the pulse delay and pulse distortion when increasing the pulse peak and keeping constant the background power is reported. These results are due to the relation between the pump-broadened transparency hole (induced by the coherent population oscillations) and the competition between gain and absorption along the fiber.

Fast and slow light propagation in Erbium-doped fiber

We demonstrate pump-power-tunable slow and superluminal pulse propagation at room temperature in an erbium-doped fiber amplifier. Signal pulses at 1550 nm were sent through an EDF with various pump intensities, obtaining signal group velocities as slow as 19,000 m/s and as fast as -16,000 m/s.

Modulation-frequency-controlled change from sub- to superluminal regime in highly doped erbium fibers

Sonia Melle, Óscar G. Calderón, E. Cesar +3 more

We report a change from sub- to superluminal propagation upon increasing the modulation frequency of an amplitude-modulated 1,550 nm signal when propagating through highly doped erbium fibers pumped at 980 nm. We show that the interplay between the pump absorption and the pump-power broadening of the spectral hole induced by coherent population oscillations may drastically affect the fractional advancement or delay of the signal for the considered fibers.

Propagation-induced transition from slow to fast light in highly doped erbium fibers

Óscar G. Calderón, Sonia Melle, M. A. Antón +3 more

We analyze the propagation regime of an amplitude-modulated $1536\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$ signal when traveling along a highly doped erbium fiber pumped at $977\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$ as a function of the fiber length. A propagation-induced transition from superluminal to subluminal propagation takes place along the fiber length which allows a change in regime solely based upon increasing the signal modulation frequency. This peculiar behavior is due to the interplay between pump absorption and pump-power broadening of the spectral hole induced by coherent population oscillations. The effect of ion density on this frequency-dependent regime change has been investigated.

We proposed and demonstrated the propagation of slow/fast light in erbium-doped fiber through gain cross modulation. We observed the ultraslow light with a group velocity of 6.1×10-3 c and the superluminal propagation with a negative group velocity of -5.1 ×10-4c. (2 pages)

Effect of ion pairs in fast-light bandwidth in high-concentration erbium-doped fibers

Óscar G. Calderón, Sonia Melle, Francisco Arrieta-Yáñez +2 more

The effect of ion pairs in high-concentration erbium-doped fibers on slow- and fast-light propagation enabled by coherent population oscillations at room temperature has been experimentally investigated. We find that an increase of the erbium ion concentration increases the fractional advancement although it degrades the bandwidth of the modulated signals that propagate at superluminal velocities due to the presence of ion pairs in the fiber.
